One of Phillies' owners dies; Halladay, Lidge updates

POSTED: Wednesday, March 16, 2011, 1:42 PM
"It's nothing," Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee said of Brad Lidge's sore arm. (Yong Kim/Staff file photo)

Jim Buck Jr., one of the Phillies owners, died unexpectedly during the night on Tuesday.

Phillies president and CEO David Montgomery issued this statement: "We are very sorry to learn of Jim Buck’s passing. Jim had been a part of the Phillies ownership group, with his brothers Whip and Bill, since December of 1981. His strength of character and steady leadership have been very important factors in the success of the Phillies today. Jim provided direction and consistent support for many of us in this organization. His wise counsel and warm friendship will be sorely missed.

"Our heartfelt condolences are expressed to Elia, Jim’s loving wife, and to his son, Jim Buck, III, daughter-in-law, Lin Buck; to his daughter, Cackie Rogers, son-in-law, Joe Rogers; to his adored grandchildren and all of the Buck family. Jim’s death, along with the recent passing of Whip Buck last October, leaves the Phillies organization with a profound sense of loss.”

The Bucks formed Tri-Play Associates and were part of the group that purchased the Phillies in 1981 with Bill Giles. The Bucks remain among the minority owners of the team.

Today was a rare day off for the Phillies, but Roy Halladay pitched in a minor league game in order to stay on scheduled to start Opening Day.

Halladay pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) with a walk and three strikeouts.

Also, Brad Lidge, who was shut down earlier this week with bicep soreness, played catch this afternoon. No indication of any problems.

Sorry to hear.....but what does that do to the ownernship issues.....More silient partners in a group out of touch with reality due their personal fortunes in the billions....or do the shares remain with the current owners....and why don't they jsut let the cigar guy buy them out and make this a real streamline organization....I am sure he would still give them thier own luxuury box where they can visit when they are so moved....

Very sorry to hear about anyone passing away, but something I noticed: Is his extended family really the Buck-Rogers family?

Had he died 5 years ago he would have been labled a clueless tightwad but since the team has made the playoffs the last 4 years our thoughts and prayers are with his grieving family.

Lidge would tell you he felt great, a waste of time. His 86 mph fastball says it clearer.

Thanks Mr. Buck for your contributions to 2006-11. All has long been forgiven for the previous decades. the 200's have been great, even those years of "almost" in the early 2000's.

Lidge: good one Philly subs, I get that old sick feeling when I hear him say that. To paraphrase Billy Crystal, who was mimicking...I forget..."It is better to feel mahvelous than to pitch mahvelous."

It's early and the Phillies have the four number one pitchers. The posters here would find fault with Jesus. don't jump off the cliff yet, philly phaithful.

I love the nicknames Main Line families give themselves -- Whip, Cackie, etc. And obviously the Bucks are way more creative than those who can't think of anything better than Trey or Muffy.

Sorry to hear of his passing and my condolences to his family. By the way, nobody dies "unexpectedly." Most editors and/or proofreaders would delete this term. Death may be "sudden" or "untimely", but it's NEVER unexpected.
