Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain, which clearly hampered him during last night's loss.

OF John Mayberry was recalled from Triple A.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and the Phillies medical staff made the decision to place Ibanez on the DL after watching him struggle to move in last night's loss to the Blue Jays. While chasing a foul ball early in the game he looked as if he were running in quick sand, he he was noticably hampered later in the game when running out a ground ball.

Amaro said the groin, which is a different issue than the sore achilles he battled recently, has bothere Ibanez since April, but that it had reached a point where the team feared that he would do serious damage to it if he cintinued to play.

The Phillies have not conducted an MRI on the groin, although one could be forthcoming.

Amaro said he didn't know how long Ibanez would be sidelined. The Phillies hope it will only be 15 days, but Amaro said it could take longer.

"We'll find out as we go through rehab," Amaro said.

Also

Brad Lidge could begin a rehab assignment this weekend if he feels 100 percent after throwing in the bullpen today, Amaro said.

Maddy - Forget about Peavy, he's on the DL and will miss 8-12 weeks. There is a chance he will miss the rest of the season. There is no chance the Padres will move him or could move him with an injury as serious as his. He will not be back on the trading block until the offseason.

It looks like it's just going to be one of those seasons. There must be a curse against teams repeating. Hopefully Mayberry gets most of the playing time.

if Rube or Cholly have a 1/2 a brain, they'd use this time to showcase Mayberry and keep Greg (i used to be a legit .300 hitter) Dobbs on the bench where he belongs.....we really need to get Mayberry and Carasco and Kendrick going here so we can lure a Peavy or Webb or Oswalt and finally stabilize this pitching staff.......whose the idiot that's linking Ibanez to roids? what game are you watching?

Raul is a good guy. If you don't like him, keep your thoughts to yourself and keep rooting for the New York Muts.

This is not good. Just when Werth is showing signs of hitting the ball really well, Ibañez goes down. It also means that any trade involving Mayberry – if any – have to be put on hold for a while, unless they want to bring Donald up and make Bruntlett the RH extra outfielder and Donald the infield sub. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

mikemike - If he was on steroids he wouldn't be on the DL, thats one of the biggest reasons players use steroids is to stay healthy throughout the year...

This makes the effort to get some pitching even more necessary in the next week or two. Raul has been just grand but lately, one could see his play wearing down except for that HR a few games ago. So hopefully John will help out and why do we still have Bako on the squad.

Not good news. I would personally give Dobbs most of the starts during Raul's absence to get him more at-bats because, the guy CAN hit. I think his hitting has suffered from lack of playing time after Werth became the everyday starter in rightfield. Mayberry can make a few spot starts and be the righthanded PH they so desperately need. @Downie27....Well said, my friend, well said.

This team is mentally tough, unlike the Mets and Braves. They'll hang in there and be playing their best by the time August rolls around. Look at it this way, it's easier to try and play .500 ball with the division lead when injuries hit than trying to make up games. That said, Amaro needs to find another starter and soon. Even a Penny or a Marquis would give the rotation some stability.

Why Ibanez? Why can't Chris Wheeler strain his larynx, and be put on the 15-YEAR disabled list? There's no justice.

mikemike, steriod users also repeat their names a lot. ...and racoons, go back to your little gingerbread house in the woods and see if Hansel and Gretel agree with you.

Dull
Been watching Mayberry on Milb-tv the last several games. He has been awful at the plate. In his last 10 games at AAA he is hitting .121. (4 for 33 with 10 K's).

Obviously this one hurts. Guess this means a Dobbs/Mayberry platoon is coming. Only positive here is maybe we will be better equipped to handle the matchups against LH starters. When Raul returns, Charlie needs to break up the 3 lefties - Utley, Werth, Howard, Raul should be 2 thru 5.

Hope Raul recovers well. The positive that could come out of this is if Mayberry excels it increases his trade stock for a pitcher.

Ugh. That may mean 0-4's every night from Graeg Dobbs for the next 2 weeks.
