OF Raul Ibanez placed on 15-day disabled list - UPDATED

POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 10:08 AM

Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain, which clearly hampered him during last night's loss.

OF John Mayberry was recalled from Triple A.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and the Phillies medical staff made the decision to place Ibanez on the DL after watching him struggle to move in last night's loss to the Blue Jays. While chasing a foul ball early in the game he looked as if he were running in quick sand, he he was noticably hampered later in the game when running out a ground ball.

Amaro said the groin, which is a different issue than the sore achilles he battled recently, has bothere Ibanez since April, but that it had reached a point where the team feared that he would do serious damage to it if he cintinued to play.

The Phillies have not conducted an MRI on the groin, although one could be forthcoming.

Amaro said he didn't know how long Ibanez would be sidelined. The Phillies hope it will only be 15 days, but Amaro said it could take longer.

"We'll find out as we go through rehab," Amaro said.

Brad Lidge could begin a rehab assignment this weekend if he feels 100 percent after throwing in the bullpen today, Amaro said.

Please play Stairs against righties. He gives you good at bats every time.

Been watching Mayberry on Milb-tv the last several games. He has been awful at the plate. In his last 10 games at AAA he is hitting .121. (4 for 33 with 10 K's).

This team is mentally tough, unlike the Mets and Braves. They'll hang in there and be playing their best by the time August rolls around. Look at it this way, it's easier to try and play .500 ball with the division lead when injuries hit than trying to make up games. That said, Amaro needs to find another starter and soon. Even a Penny or a Marquis would give the rotation some stability.

Don't waste your time replying to mikemike, who is just trying to get a reaction out of people for his own ego.

Not good news. I would personally give Dobbs most of the starts during Raul's absence to get him more at-bats because, the guy CAN hit. I think his hitting has suffered from lack of playing time after Werth became the everyday starter in rightfield. Mayberry can make a few spot starts and be the righthanded PH they so desperately need. @Downie27....Well said, my friend, well said.
