I wrote about 800 words on Cole Hamels' complete game shutout for the newspaper. Orlando Hudson summed it up in considerably less.
"He stuck it up our (rear ends) the last two times we faced him," the Dodgers infielder said. "What more can you say?"
The Dodgers didn't need to say much. Joe Torre took care of it in the fifth inning when he intentionally walked Carlos Ruiz with a runner on third and one out. It is a strategic move usually reserved for desperate situations: hope that Hamels either grounds into a double play or bunts Ruiz over and then take your chances with Jimmy Rollins with two outs.
Torre admitted afterward he did it because he realized how good Hamels was a pitching, and that a 2-0 lead just might hold up. In the end, a 1-0 lead would've held.
How good was Hamels? Consider this: the minimum number of batters a pitcher can face in a complete game is 27. Hamels faced 29.
Final line: nine innings, five hits, five strikeouts, no walks, and a mere 97 pitches.
That's seven straight for the Phillies, who are now 12 games over .500.
I'm out for tonight.
- will someone tell me what the heck is wrong with Rollins---he pops everything up. he's been awful. this is becoming a little too long for the excuse of a slow start.
Comment removed.
This team was 14-14 after 28 games, then 18-6 in the next 24. Looks like they're hitting their stride. cmccarry
Breaking News: J.J. Putz needs to undergo elbow surgery and will miss 8-10 weeks. Omar Minaya is having a press conference at 4pm to tell everybody exactly that. With all these injuries to that team, they're really screwed right now. 4DaysRest.com
I have stayed up for every WC game. I have the MLB package and was listening to the LA feed. Does anyone else do the broadcast with Vince Scully? Other than 5-6 words, his was the only voice I heard. Also, he has so many inane facts on opposing players -- not just the starters, but everyone. He knew Bruntlett's high school GPA (3.97) and SAT score (1460). Unbelievable. Just a totally different broadcaster. Master Dreamz
I would like to thank the Phils starting pitching the last couple of nights for making quick work of the opponents to help get them games over a more manageable time. Keep on rolling Phils. wtphillies- J-Roll was supposed to hit.400 in May according to J-Roll. RAS
- I want to say that J Roll is getting a pass for too long. If the Phils weren't hot right now people would be tearing him up. What would be wrong with sending him down to the 8th hole? He's been demoted before. The run production would be so much higher if there wasn't an automatic out at the top of the order.
What I saw last night, was what I've been waiting for, for a long time. Hamels definately has the talent to do what he did last night every night, its just been this question of whether he has the moxey. Last night showed he can keep it together for 9 innings without giving up that dinger to ruin the performance. From this point on the skys the limit and the only question for Cole is where does he want to fit in, in the record books. **** Also, in Feb I suggested that Cole needed to add at least another pitch because common sense tells you that as good as he is he would eventually take a beating in the bigs. They did that last night and the results were fun to watch. Here's hoping he wins 20 this year. Go Phils!!! Wally 24
05MustangGT: I thought the same thing until Bruntlett gunned down that dodger who tried to stretch a single into a double. The Phillies defense is playing extraordinary right now, and that's what wins championships! cazzoduro
I've only seen a small amount of the games (glad its the weekend and I can stay up 2night and of course the weekend games will be on at decent time). Happen to catch the Utley armpit catch though! Hoping the Phils can run away with the Division! Just hope they save some momentum for the fall. KarenA- Joe Savery has poor periferals and is trade fodder in the next couple of years. He'll never be able to crack the Phillies starting rotation. He isn't good enough.
- Mick, you forgot the turtle from the Comcast commercials. EL Zorro
- I knew Cole was cruising, but when they put the graphic and it read 70-some pitches in 7 innings, I said this is unbelievable. (BTW, where is the guy that posted the other day Hamels wasn't an ACE.) That was a very impressive performance against the team with the best record in baseball and in their own backyard. greenflyer, this is the first time I've watched all West Coast games. It helps that they are in first place (no I’m not a front runner) and I wanted to see how BastardOH! and Happ reacted against a pretty good team in the other side of the land. This is the most exciting time in recent Phillies history. We are in 1st place, and it looks that we’ll stay there for a while the way the Mets and the rest of the division are crumbling down, and we have nice young talent coming up and waiting in the minors. The draft is also around the corner. EL Zorro
Greenflyer, I cannot remember ever staying up for 4 straight west coast games since 1993. It is fun to watch this team especially when you can see in their eyes that they believe they will win no matter what. Also, the defense...anyone ever remember a better defensive team for the phillies? kjb304
Green Flyer, I dont know how to submit detailed info to your poll, but three of my Polish friends took to the tv last night: Kowalski, Jablonski and Repulski. Hope this helps your poll numbers. mick314
let us know if you found the kogi bbq truck, dave. PosterChild
hey Cheese, you know any info on Joe Savery? I've seen his stats, but is he pitching well? How is he projecting? DCExpat- Cole is a stud! The starting pitching has been great and some nice situational hitting last night. Just one complaint...can't we do better than Brunlett as our right handed outfield option? Bring back Mayberry!
2 over the minimum # of pitches...incredible! DeTom
This is the first time I have tried to watch games from the west coast in a looooong time. It's been worth it, but can't wait till they get back east. I'd like to see a poll about how many others are staying up to watch these great games. Is it just me? greenflyer
Brilliant performance! gbrettfan
Nice to see a gem from a reliable pitcher. Preserve Jon
The Mets don't sound too good....Reyes with a setback and now gonna be out longer, Beltran mouthing off on how they got swept by a bad team.....it's gonna get real ugly up there real fast. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of fellas and fans. Mark1npt

- That was something special. I just hope they have something in the tank when the West Coast part of the trip is over and they head to Citi Field.
Complete game, under 100 pitches, NO walks. Wow! Dubee needs to send tape to every pitcher in the organization. I tuned in to a ballgame, but watched a clinic. mick314
Great sign to see Hamels in top form. And the lead widens to four games while on the West Coast. No wonder they're watching the NBA finals out there. greenflyer
Huge. Go on with your big bad self, Chooch. Philth
Wow. Lando_M
