Myers' velocity up in scoreless inning
Daily News staff
Brett Myers faced four batters, striking out one and walking one, in his one inning rehab start for the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday night.
Myers' first pitch of the night was 93 mph, a dramatic improvement from the 88-90 that he threw when was with the Phillies before the surgery.
"[The hip injury ] definitely was a factor in the back of my mind. I knew if I let one go, I might have had one of those symptoms where it would lock up or be painful," Myers said. "I haven't felt anything [since the surgery], luckily enough. The doctor did a very good job, my velocity is definitely a lot better than it was when I was hurt. That's not in the back of my mind anymore."
Lake County leadoff batter Delvi Cid grounded the first pitch to second base on a fastball. Myers went on to throw a called third strike past Bo Greenwell on an 80-mph breaking ball. He walked Nate Recknagel before cleanup batter Chris Nash lined a ball to center. It was handled by Lakewood 19-year-old speedster Anthony Gose, and Myers' evening had concluded.
Myers said he did not know when he pitch again, but remained optimistic about rejoining the Phillies in September.
Meyers is currently being paid 10 million if I recall correctly. Does anyonereally think he will come down to 4 million to be a reliever ?? This will be the true test of whether he wants to be a Phillie 64 survivor
i can't do anything but laugh when i see that picture of David at the top of the blog... Random39
Phils will need Myers in the post season. Can you imagine Lidge closing against the Cards with the Phils up by 1 and Pujols coming to the plate with a runner on base? Lord help us! SOFTFOAMEARPLUGS.COM
So do the phils sign Myers in 2010 ? marcards
I agree on getting rid of Wheeler,he think he know it all.Did he ever play ball? rusty256

Oh... I have an original idea, I think I'll blame the pitching coach, Rich Dubee. It's all Rich Dubee's fault! Jaime Moyer's mediocre season? Rich Dubee! Brett Myers falling out of his truck? Rich Dubee! Cole Hamels spending too much time last off season on the media circuit? Rich Dubee! Eric Bruntlett's sub-.200 season? Rich Dubee! The Eagles failing to win a Super Bowl? Rich Dubee! Michael Nutter cutting city services? Rich Dubee! "He is to lay both hands on the head of Rich Dubee and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Phillies pitchers--all their sins--and put them on Rich Dubee's head. He shall send Rich Dubee away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task." - Leviticus 16:21 smel4727- Amen!!!! From a Martino piece this past May: JOE BLANTON WORKS ON HIS MECHANICS By Andy Martino Inquirer Staff Writer Trotting toward the mound before the bottom of the fifth inning Thursday, Joe Blanton thought he was in the middle of a breakthrough performance. He had held the Reds scoreless through four innings in Cincinnati, while displaying what he considered his best stuff of the season. Three outs later, Blanton had surrendered five runs, including a three-run homer, and was forced later to again stand at his locker and insist he had felt better than the numbers indicated. HE ALSO NOTED THAT MOST OF HIS STRUGGLES CAME WITH RUNNERS ON BASE. (The numbers backed that claim. Blanton's earned run average this year with the bases empty is 5.40; with runners on base, 9.68; and with runners in scoring position, 14.90.) BLANTON SPECULATED THAT THE CAUSE WAS A MECHANICAL ISSUE WHEN HE PITCHED FROM THE STRETCH.... They don’t need a pitching coach or at least Dubee, it seems. EL Zorro
Watch out pujols here comes Howard. Phillies08
Fan in Jerusalem....you can't just offer arbitration to anyone. Myers is not arbitration eligible and will be a free agent after this season. Arbitration is something that younger players get based on years of service. I welcome Myers back for the rest of the year but I have my doubts that he will be back next year unless he doesn't get any good offers from other clubs, which is certainly possible coming off of surgery and after being demoted last year (even tho he came back and was solid). baseball_fan- Yes, teams can offer arbitration to their own free agents, just to protect themselves and keep their rights in case one of their players sign with another team. In that case they get compensation depending on what Type of FA the player is. It's up to the player to accept it. Last year the Phillies did not offer Burrell arbitration, because they were afraid he was going to accept it. Instead they went for Ibañez. In Myer’s case it depends on how Lidge and Brett perform the rest of the season. Myers is an interesting case, because he can either be a starter or closer. So he has some value. Again, it depends on what he does the rest of the season. If I were the Phillies I would offer Myers a one-year contract loaded with incentives. That way he knows he has to have a nice season to get his next big contract. By that time, Drabek should be ready. Myers could leave as a FA and we get the picks or he could stay as a closer. El Zorro. Lugo might be swinging a good bat, but he's not hitting many balls with it. His batting average over the past 30 days is .208. phillyl0
baseball_fan ... yes, you can offer arbitration to a player eligible for free agency. In fact, you have to to get draft picks as compensation if they sign elsewhere. But the Phils won't have much incentive to offer Myers arbitration because they probably won't get any picks for him. In the current Elias rankings, he doesn't qualify as a Type A or Type B free agent. phillyl0- Yeah Philly10, but he kills the Phillies. He has a lifetime .452 and a 1.280 OPS in 23 games against the Phillies. That's what I meant to say. He also is a .280 hitter in Sept/Oct. EL Zorro
Fun fact: The Phillies have more game-ending unassisted triple plays in the past 10 days than Julio Lugo has base hits. GoPhilsGo
