Myers: 3-4 month recovery if surgery necessary
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Barring an unexpected prognosis from hip specialist Bryan Kelly, Phillies righthander Brett Myers is headed toward hip surgery and a three-to-four month recovery. Should Myers undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum, he is optimistic that he could return to the field in time to participate in the playoffs should the Phillies advance that far.
Myers' injury is similar to the one that second baseman Chase Utley experienced, according to Myers' agent, Craig Landis. In fact, the Phillies are currently in the process of setting up an appointment with hip specialist Dr. Bryan Kelly, the New York-based doctor who performed Utley's procedure.
Utley underwent surgery in November and was back at full strength by mid-March.
"It's like Chase's," Landis said. "Brett said it's probably a little worse, but they are saying three to four months, probably four months but Brett is pretty tough, a pretty quick healer. It'll be toward the end if at all. If he had surgery, his new goal will be to get it right away and try to get back for Septemenber and certainly October."
The trip to see Kelly is more procedural than anything. The Phillies expect Myers to undergo surgery and are readying their contingency plans.
"It looks like surgery is probably necessary," Landis said.
Could Brett possibly do the "short version" of the surgery A-Rod had to tide him over through the season? gbrettfan
Champions don't panic. Lando_M
I doubt a starting pitcher could have an abridged version...especially in the NL. 100 to 120 pitches per game, plus 3 ABs, and fielding the position. If the soft tissue is damaged by rough bone, then they will have little choice than to smooth the bone out and repair what they can while they are in there. JammRock
Would like the Phils to give one of the kids like Joe Savery or Drabek a shot before we go for a trade..jmo.. SAILOR7175
I'd like to see KK back for a turn or two. If he stinks it up, no big deal. If he's on, then great! maximusud
KK will be announced some time today, BOOK it. mick314

Comment removed.- The Phillies lack Major League ready outfield depth, and as Werth can play all 3 positions out there, as well as emergency catcher, he's not going anywhere. Just sign Pedro Martinez, doesn't cost much.
- Kyle Kendrick and Antonio Bast•rdo are possibilities for the time being. Both will pitch again around Brett Myers turn and both will won their last outings. But, I don't know if the Phillies are satisfied with Kendrick’s progress in AAA, - you know the other pitch he is supposed to develop to complement his sinker and Bast•rdo is a LH pitcher. I don’t think it will be a good idea to have 4 lefties in the rotation, especially when two of them are rookies and the other is struggling. Don’t be surprised if they call Vance Worley instead. The 3rd round pick from 2008 out of Long Beach State is pitching pretty well in Reading (4-2, 2.84 ERA and overall since being drafted is 7-4 with a 2.64 ERA). He could be the most ready for the ML of all the pitching prospects, while Amaro works the phones to get a another pitcher. EL Zorro
Phillies won't start the arbitration clock on guys like Drabeck or Savery. 2Parm
Whats wrong with Madson as a starter & Conley as a setup man with Durbin & Park in the mix for releivers 2 or 3 inn's as needed topwop
Comment removed.- So much for Myers' weight loss being a good thing. Fat doesn't tear of fray. Smaller hiney = trip to DL. Bummer. RAS
