Rest of Season Rotation
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Even before the game began, it sounded like the Phillies were leaning toward starting Jamie Moyer on three days rest against the Brewers Thursday. Now that lefthander J.A. Happ is coming off a lengthy relief appearance, it would seem there are no other options.
Moyer has pitched OK on three days rest in his career. He's done it 14 times, though the last time he's done it after a 100-plus pitch outing was 2001.
That's the short term.
From a long term perspective, things are a little more muddled.
Kendrick allowed more runs (7) than he recorded outs (4) before he was pulled from the game with one out in the second innings.
Happ came on to pitch 3 1/3, striking out five but allowing three runs on a couple of home runs by Jorge Cantu and Cody Ross.
So what do the Phillies do now?
Keep Kendrick as the fifth starter? Try Happ out? Give Adam Eaton another shot? Mix and match?
The good news is, we might only be talking about two starts:
Pitching coach Rich Dubee said before the game he wants to keep Moyer, Cole Hamels and Brett Myers on their fifth day for the rest of the season. Because the Phillies still have a couple of off days, they could do it and potentially get Hamels an extra start in the regular season finale.
If Moyer, Hamels and Myers all pitch on their regular day for the rest of the season, the Phillies would only need a fifth starter in two more games.
Here is how I have it figured:
EDITED: Props to CyHamels for catching the Moyer/Myers gaffe. . .
9/10. . . .Florida. . . .Myers
9/11. . . .Brewers. . . .Moyer
9/12. . . .Brewers. . . .Hamels
9/13. . . .Brewers. . . .Blanton
9/14. . . .Brewers. . . .TBA
9/15. . . .Off. . . . . .N/A
9/16. . . .at Braves. . .Myers
9/17. . . .at Braves. . .Moyer
9/18. . . .at Braves. . .Hamels
9/19. . . .at Marlins. . Blanton
9/20. . . .at Marlins. . TBA
9/21. . . .at Marlins. . Myers
9/22. . . .Braves. . . . Moyer
9/23. . . .Braves. . . . Hamels
9/24. . . .Braves. . . . Blanton
9/25. . . .Off. . . . . .N/A
9/26. . . .Nationals. . .Myers
9/27. . . .Nationals. . .Moyer
9/28. . . .Nationals. . .Hamels
So Myers, Moyer and Hamels would each get four more starts, while the No. 5 starter would get two more.
I'll raise this scenario as well: If the Phillies brought Myers back on three days rest to face the Brewers on Sunday, they could finish out the season with just one start by the No. 5 starter.
- Soooooooo...this is what happens during blow-out losses :) Hazy
David, Thanks for the effort here. Very Interesting. slabold
you can replace TBA with Happ. Kendrick is DONE. Oh and Charlie Manuel just killed a rally. It should be 10-9 because he should have pinch run Golson for stairs. BIG Mistake. Oh and someone bring back Carrasco to take Blanton's spot. Get the visa people in gear!!! visionbrkr
Please don't use the word 'Eaton' on this blog again. I'm begging you. Jeffrey
AND ANOTHER ONE gets lost. So "horrible" taguchi should have just stolen second and then rollins single would've scored him. This game should be 10-10. amazing how horrible the in game decisions are today. visionbrkr

Hopefully Jim Salisbury from the Inqwaster gets jettisonned as well. shoeshineboy- Pinch run Taguchi or Golson, either way, I was shocked to see Stairs on the basepath. But that's not the story of the game. Starting pitching is the story. I agree with the premise of front loading your starting rotation if the days correspond. The fewer fifth starter games, the better. Once again the Phillies have a hole at the top of the rotation instead of a Big Three. Wet, lather, rinse, repeat for 120+ years. Imagine a legit #2 (Sheets, Harden, Haren) behind Hamels, ahead of Myers, Moyer and Blanton. The Mets would have little chance. Happ provides depth and is a 5th starter candidate for 2009. But no higher. Same with Carrasco or any other rookie. Kendrick will have to fight to hold his 5th spot next year. He's had great runs of success and shouldn't be counted out for next season but they are out of time to straighten him out for the stretch run. Happ should get the fifth starter's next turn with a chance to hold on to the spot going forward. But the need for a #2 starter is urgent and should take precedence over all other needs this off-season. xfactor

Kendrick is done. He had a nice run here, but realistically he doesn't have the stuff to be a big league pitcher. He should join Eaton in the Phillies Never Was Club and spend the next 10 years paying back his salary via beer vending in the upper deck. Blanton should quit baseball and become a professional eater. Something tells me he'd be better at it. Hamels needs to learn how to pitch in big games, and Myers needs to convince MLB official scorers to change some of his early season decisions from L's to W's because if he had been halfway decent from the get-go we'd be in first place. Moyer should be venerated and paid Dubee's salary on top of his own; Dubee is worthless. Oh, and as for Ruben Wade Amaro, he should be shipped out of here to Houston in exchange for Lance Berkman- I'm sure we could somehow convince slick Eddie that such a trade would be to his benefit. maximusud

Wow- Kendrick pitched aggressively tonight and somehow he didn't dominate. Oh wait, what's that Dubee? You actually have to have good stuff to get people out? Aggression alone doesn't get the job done? Who would have thunk it? By the way, Dave- that's how I had the rotation figured, but you should flip Myers and Moyer during the last series so they both would be going on normal rest. Also, given the resurgence of Brett Myers, I very much doubt the Phillies would ever bring back Myers on 3 days rest so they don't mess with his routine (they have him long tossing again! woohoo! joy for obedience) given where he was in the first half of the season to where he is now. I think it would take a must win game ('must win' in the sense of elimination being the other option) for them to do this. CyHamels
Maximus- what happened up there? the submit button works, I swear..... and papreps, everyone knows charlie is too much of a pansy to use that rotation /dallas green CyHamels
