Rest of Season Rotation

Even before the game began, it sounded like the Phillies were leaning toward starting Jamie Moyer on three days rest against the Brewers Thursday. Now that lefthander J.A. Happ is coming off a lengthy relief appearance, it would seem there are no other options.

Moyer has pitched OK on three days rest in his career. He's done it 14 times, though the last time he's done it after a 100-plus pitch outing was 2001.

That's the short term.

From a long term perspective, things are a little more muddled.

Kendrick allowed more runs (7) than he recorded outs (4) before he was pulled from the game with one out in the second innings.

Happ came on to pitch 3 1/3, striking out five but allowing three runs on a couple of home runs by Jorge Cantu and Cody Ross.

So what do the Phillies do now?

Keep Kendrick as the fifth starter? Try Happ out? Give Adam Eaton another shot? Mix and match?

The good news is, we might only be talking about two starts:

Pitching coach Rich Dubee said before the game he wants to keep Moyer, Cole Hamels and Brett Myers on their fifth day for the rest of the season. Because the Phillies still have a couple of off days, they could do it and potentially get Hamels an extra start in the regular season finale.

If Moyer, Hamels and Myers all pitch on their regular day for the rest of the season, the Phillies would only need a fifth starter in two more games.

Here is how I have it figured:

EDITED: Props to CyHamels for catching the Moyer/Myers gaffe. . .

9/10. . . .Florida. . . .Myers
9/11. . . .Brewers. . . .Moyer
9/12. . . .Brewers. . . .Hamels
9/13. . . .Brewers. . . .Blanton
9/14. . . .Brewers. . . .TBA
9/15. . . .Off. . . . . .N/A
9/16. . . .at Braves. . .Myers
9/17. . . .at Braves. . .Moyer
9/18. . . .at Braves. . .Hamels
9/19. . . .at Marlins. . Blanton
9/20. . . .at Marlins. . TBA
9/21. . . .at Marlins. . Myers
9/22. . . .Braves. . . . Moyer
9/23. . . .Braves. . . . Hamels
9/24. . . .Braves. . . . Blanton
9/25. . . .Off. . . . . .N/A
9/26. . . .Nationals. . .Myers
9/27. . . .Nationals. . .Moyer
9/28. . . .Nationals. . .Hamels

So Myers, Moyer and Hamels would each get four more starts, while the No. 5 starter would get two more.

I'll raise this scenario as well: If the Phillies brought Myers back on three days rest to face the Brewers on Sunday, they could finish out the season with just one start by the No. 5 starter.
