Moyer hospitalized
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Veteran lefty Jamie Moyer is expected to spend the next few days at Thomas Jefferson University hospital as doctors attempt to pinpoint the cause of renewed pain in his surgically-repaired groin/lower abdomen.
Here's team doctor Michael Ciccotti on the situation, which he says should not at this point prevent Moyer from returning for the start of spring training.
"As you know, seven weeks ago Jamie had a sports hernia repair by Dr. Bill Myers, who is a national expert," Ciccotti said. "And he had it done at Hanehman University, where Dr. Myers is, and everything went very well. And maybe since the weekend he started to have some increasing discomfort, some symptoms, and that prompted us to have him come to Philadelphia to be evaluated. He saw Bill Myers. Our feelng was we would have him admitted to Thomas Jefferson. We're in the midst of evaluating him. He's very comfortable. He's walking. He's up. He's doing his normal routine. And we're in the midst of evaluting him and treating him for this increase in pain. He's getting some tests, a MRI. We'll be monitoring him over the next several days. He's continuing to exercise as his comfort allows. That's really where we're at right now. His recurrent discomfort or pain is what prompted him to be evaluated and to come up here to be seen by Dr. Myers, who has done the surgery, so he could get a better perspective on it."

The Phillies have made several minor league signings over the past week. The headliner is probably DeWayne Wise, a 32-year-old utility man who is best known as the guy who saved Mark Buehrle's perfect game with an outstanding leaping catch at the wall.
Wise hit .225/.262/.366 in 153 plate appearances for the White Sox. The Phillies also have signed 31-year-old Wilson Valdez, another utility man who hit .256/.326/.337 in 95 plate appearances for the Mets.

Wow it is is Thanksgiving--Not Wish you well Jamie. KINGOFZED
All the best to JM....speedy recovery...see you in the spring. psuwelsh
Like I've said before, the Phils are going to see to it that Moyer dosen't pass his physical and dosen't make the '10 roster. This nothing of a blurb leaked by the team is laying ground work towards that. thorshuffle

Why would the Phillies not want Moyer to pass his physical? Regardless if he's physically able to play next year, or if they don't want him back, they have to PAY him. Baseball contracts are ironclad and his money is guaranteed. If you don't understand how baseball works don't make idiotic comments. Eilex826
Best regard to JM and we hope you are feeling better soon. Sorry to have you in Jeff for the holiday. GBA vc bear

They don't want him to pitch again because he was just plain awful last year and he's on the other side of 40. If he fails his physical his contract will be paid by insurance, not the team payroll. So know how the game works Eilex826 before you shoot your mouth off dope!! thorshuffle
thorshuffle...in case you're not totally aware of how a baseball contract works, it is not fully insured. A team rarely recovers 100% of the money and the insurance on the contract only pays out under certain circumstances. For instance a pitcher coming off shoulder surgery makes it difficult, if not impossible, to get insurance for a shoulder. You, nor I, have no idea how exactly the insurance coverage is written. What insurance company, in this day and age, would guarantee that much much money to a 46 year old pitcher? Hmm.. Eilex826
thorshuffle -- how do you know the Phillies insured Moyers' contract? paolibulldog
I'm fully aware of how the system works. While the coverage may not be 100% it will be a large percentage of the remainder of the contract. Since Moyer's deal was signed before the start of last season and the injury occured during that contract the contract will be insured if he's physically unable to perform. You're trying to argue about getting insured after the fact. I'm not saying that at all. thorshuffle
Never saw more fans worry more about how a team spends than how much in the last 125+ years said team actually won.You would think the money is actually coming out of their own pockets.I wish more people would worry about things like how are we going to pay back China for the Trillions of dollars we've borrowed from them the last 8-9 yrs and how if we lower taxes we can pay them and the other countries that own our 12 Trillion dollar PLUS debt back. GeorgeDumbyaBush
i am reporting abuse. me ma spanked me. kiwi
pbd - all players contracts are insured. thorshuffle
GDB - If that's your concern perhaps find a related article and post your thoughts there rather than on a story about a Phillies pitcher !!! thorshuffle
Does China have a righty bat to come off the bench or a set-up guy? And, I know our payroll is high, but it isn't 12 trillion- only the Yankees spend that much. KMG
thorshuffle -- answer my question. paolibulldog
Thor, I ask these questions sincerely: (1) If it IS the Phillies' intention to save money via insurance (how much, if much at all, remains unclear), then you are saying the Phillies exert control over doctors who give physicals, right? That the passing of the physical is not really a medical decision, and that doctors will, what, falsify medical records if told to do so by the team? For if Moyer's "failing" his physical is something the team is setting up, then it's not a medical opinion. In that case, an insurance company losing millions -- as per your argument -- would clearly investigate. And the Phillies would not only be liable for the contract's money, but they would also be civilly liable for more money, and criminally liable for fraud. Is this not the scenario you are suggesting? (2) You say this "nothing of a blurb" leaked by the team is laying the groundwork for such a move. Do you believe it's SO insignificant that a prominent veteran player is hospitalized locally that it's not even worth ANY comment by the team? What if Moyer had been hospitalized and the Phillies made no comment? In this Internet age, rumors would be flying... To fail to comment seems to me simply irresponsible, and thus a more plausible reason why the Phillies DID comment than their paving the way for the manipulation of a medical physical and the duping of an insurance company out of millions of dollars. Hey George, Keep the politics out of my sports pages. And the reason we worry about how the team spends the money is because it impacts the product that the fans pay for. Even without a salary cap, the Phils have a budget. If they overpay for someone or have too many years on a contract it will impact their ability to add talent. mikeyhigs

Hope you're back on the road to recovery! Get well soon! Audrey J
we've cornered the market on utility men.. zwarte piet
Execellent point!! The economy plus all the money we borrowed from China makes all this contract arguement seem stupid... tony b
Sorry mikeyhigs pally, you're stuck with me for at least 8 more years.Back to my original point, that the fans have no idea what the owners have in their offshore untaxed accounts or should they care. The reason the teams in this town have been such a collective bunch of losers over the years,is because the fans are such sheep, including yourslf Mikeyhigs my PALIE.whoknows what their profit margin is,have you seen any statements lately? My point is about winning, and except for the rare exception like the Marlins a few years back, who for a short time cornered the market on Latino talent, you only get what you pay for.And unless you have really low personal esteem, you care about the quality of your entertainment. And in the 4th Largest national sports markets the # of championships we've won is a disgrace. As a comparison I'd rather watch the GODFATHER 162 times a year, than WALKER TEXAS RANGER.New York fans would not put up with the mediocrity, does that mean they have higher standards than us,I think not,I think we've become complaisant with a losing atmosphere and need to hold these owners accountable and stay on top of them with forums like this and boycotts ultimately to get a winning product.I think with our years of patience we deserve alot more than 1 championship every 25 YEARS ALOT MORE,for my patience and the money I've spent watching these teams over the years.Philly fans collectively should say enough to mediocrity.Don't forget HIGGYPOO,as Rickey Bobby once said"IF YOU AIN'T FIRST,YOUR LAST". GeorgeDumbyaBush
Jamie GODSPEED,you're a Philly original bud.You were a key cog in our drive to win it all in 2008.I know being the competitor you are you'll want to start, but I think on this team the way it's constituted, you'd be alot more valuable as a long releiver.Anyway see you at Spring Training! For a minute there, I thought the Phillies signed Rick Wise ...... But then I remembered he never threw a perfect game. PhightinPhil- Get well Mr. Moyer! My guess is that DeWayne Wise and Wilson Valdez will be insurance from the minor leagues or cut. They are not what you want coming off the bench to hit.
GeorgeDumbyaBush -- Go post on Fox News or MSNBC and stop taking up space on nonsensical comparisons. KINGOFZED
thor...you know for a fact that ALL players contracts are insured? Where did you get that idea from? It certianly is not true. The insurance a team can get for a players contract is based on a lot of factors...health, age, history, etc. For instance, the Mets Johan Santana had a history of elbow problems when they signed him to a $137.5M contract and therefore they could not find an insurance company to take that risk, so if Santana's elbow blows up the Mets are on the hook for every dime of his contract. Giving a 46 year old a two-year mulimillion dollar contract would raise flags and insurance companies could, and probably did, decline to offer coverage. Would an insurance company give a policy to a 85 year old in failing health who's smoked for 60 years? Same thing with a ballplayer in his twilight years who risks breaking down at any pitch. In any case I'd love to see Moyer come back healthy, pitch well and instill his baseball insight in the younger players on the team. Eilex826
Kingofdumb Fox and MSNBC don't take people that have facts and want to get out a message for positive change. That's why their called conservatives, look up the definition please,we'd still be living in caves sitting around a pile of rocks if it wasn't for progressive thinkers. Now,boy go serve Mr. Montgomery his candied sweet potatoes.BBBBBAAAAAAAAABBBBBAAAAA... GeorgeDumbyaBush- Please Talk sports not politics
- Hey GeorgeDumb: Keep your political comments to yourself, this is a BASEBALL blog, not a pocketball blog. DaveCicc
Dave being the CHICCK,you are I'm sure you're on the Pocketball Special O.Team.This is America right Davinci, and our economy effects everything including sports. This is the year the curse of Steinbrenner and his ungodly spending on men playing kids games could finally be reversed, and fiscal sanity brought back to sports. How do you justfy children trapped in mens bodies many more than Doctors or Scientists saving millions and improving our standard of living every day making a fraction of that.I agree to disagree,I think this is an excellent forum to discuss the economics behind sports because with the Economy as bad as it is it effect everything from ticket prices,to what free agents we get,how much our Comcast bills go up and how much tickets cost, just ask Phillie fans. This is just the beginning of the economies effect on the fans enjoyment of the live sports experience. GeorgeDumbyaBush- DeWayne Wise + Wilson Valdez + Juan Castro = Automatic World Championship. Polanco? We don't need no stinkin' Polanco. A reliable starter? We've got Hamels, Martinez and Moyer.
