Moyer: 'I have every intention of pitching again'

POSTED: Friday, July 23, 2010, 1:54 PM

Phillies lefthander Jamie Moyer issued a statement through his foundation this afternoon, in an effort to clarify concerns about the condition of his elbow.

Moyer will head to the disabled list with what the Phillies said was a sprained ulnar collateral ligament and sprained flexor pronator tendon. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said it was unclear whether surgery would be required for the 47-year-old lefthander.

Here is Moyer's statement in full:

"As you know by now, I suffered an elbow injury during my last start. We are still meeting with doctors to get a thorough diagnosis of the injury. There have been reports circulating that have put a timeline on my recovery and the extent of my injury. Since these reports did not come from me, I wanted to set the record straight.

"The bottom line is that we still don't know these answers. I have every intention of pitching again and am starting a rehab program today. When we have a more complete diagnosis, I will work with the Phillies' training and medical staff to put together a plan for getting back on the mound.

"Thanks, as always, to all of the fans and friends who have contacted us and The Moyer Foundation with well wishes. I have been blessed with a wonderful, and mostly injury free, career and I look forward to continuing that career as soon as possible. In the meantime, I will do whatever I can to be there for my teammates and work hard to get back on the mound. Thanks again for everything."

Moyer was removed from his last start after 47 pitches. Amaro had said Moyer had experienced discomfort in the elbow previously but that had worsened.

Not a good sign. Good luck, Jamie.

Moyer is and was a good pitcher, but there come a time when a team has to give youth a chance. Time to retire.

JesseH is correct! People have short-term memory problems. He not only whined, but as reported at the time, he called the media over to where he was sitting in the stands during batting practice before that evening's game and gave an impromptu press conference where he cried....As he demonstated last year, NOT a nice guy and VERY MUCH out for himself. Good riddance!

With all due respect and admiration, WHAT A FREAK! It's hard to imagine what motivates the guy. I hope he makes it back and pitches until he's 50. As long as there's one major league player older than me my dream stays alive.

Love to see him back, even here, if he would get realistic about salary.

Bye! Bye! Jamie, your godson Rube paid you 10 times what you were worth when you lost every playoff game for the team in 08 then dug up the World Series mound like you were a contributor. 8 million dollars this year for a 5th starter is outrageous. Glad your not going to be eligible for another ridiculous contract making Rube unable to sign a real pitcher again for the next two years.
