Moyer: "Disheartened" and "mis-led"

POSTED: Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 5:44 PM

Jamie Moyer did not take any questions. He was not interested in discussing his new role in the bullpen. He simply had some things he wanted to get off his chest. In an off-the-cuff statement that lasted several minutes while sitting in the stands at Wrigley Field, the veteran lefthander said he felt "a little disheartened" and "a little bit like I've been mis-led" after the Phillies informed him that they were giving his spot in the rotation to Pedro Martinez.

"I most certainly do not want to be a distraction," Moyer said. "I'm not happy with the decision the Phillies have made."

Moyer said that when negotiating his two-year contract with the Phillies this offseason, he was worried about a situation similar to this occurring. While he acknowledged that "you can't promise anything in this game," he talked to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and club president David Montgomery about his worries, both of whom responded by "reassuring me this type of thing would not happen."

"I feel a little disheartened, and a little bit like I've been mis-led," Moyer said.

Amaro declined to comment through a Phillies spokesman, saying he was not at liberty to discuss the specifics of contract negotiations.

This is why Jamie and his agent fought for a two year contract. They both knew his time was running short and wanted the extra cash just in case of something like this. I don't blame them, but there should be no reason for complaining.

Just think Jamie, if you wouldn't have been greedy and had your agent hold out for a two-year deal, you'd only have another 2-3 months to stink up the bullpen...

Any athlete worth his salt does not take a demotion well. It's their competitivness that differentiates the great ones from the average ones. Jamie is speaking out of frustration because, he has to know in the back of his mind that he is getting close to the end of his career. Nobody likes being told they are not good enough and he is reacting to the moment. In a couple of days, he will calm down and continue to be a positive presence in the clubhouse. Lastly, everybody acts like Martinez is an upgrade. Well guess what, he had a 5.15 ERA against MINOR league batters. 11 K's don't mean squat when your pitching against inferior talent. I hope he does well in the major's, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Jamie back in the rotation before years end.

Jamie is a great man whose feelings are hurt. I am surprised he went public. By his comments he has become a distraction, just what he did not want to be. Hopefully he will come to his senses and smooth this over in a day or so. I repeat, Jamie is a great man!

HAHAHAHAHAHA.... Way to be "professional" about it Jamie. I want to be a rocket scientist. But you know what? If you don't have the qualifications, what is there to cry about!? This isn't the Philadelphia "MakeJamieHappies" The bar gets raised when you're trying to defend a World Title. If everyone on the staff had your ERA, we'd be a laughingstock. Take your millions, swallow your pride, and enjoy your retirement (which you should've done last year)

There is no need for the comments to get costic. Moyer is hurt, embarassed, and the worst thing: disappointed in himself. His mistake was to say anything so soon after his demotion happened. Given a bit of time I am sure he would agree with this assessment of the situation.

A 5.15 ERA against MINOR league batters? This is why we're demoting Jamie Moyer? Are you kidding me? I'll say it again until I'm blue in the face: the $2 million reclamation project that is Pedro Martinez is going to come back to bite us in the behind. Watch.

Keep Jamie on the active roster. The Phils owe him that much. Use him for spot starts and a long man. Bring him back next year as a coach or in some kind of teaching capacity. Jamie Moyer has class and you all know it.

Jamie, the fans in Philly still love you! As a Philly fan yourself growing up, you know how it is in this town. We want to win!! 99.9% of the fans don't know what it's like to take the field at the pro level. We know you are trying your best, but right now the ball is not bouncing your way. In your long career, I'm sure you've seen it a thousand times to other pitchers...and players. Only this time it feels personal, and I'm sure you're feeling hurt and betrayed. But just like those other thousand times, it's business, not personal. This is still a game, it was here long before us and will be here long after we've been gone. But the Philly fans will still be the same, and baseball will still be a business. Let's hope you can earn your way back into the rotation. You're still on the team, and right now you can help your Phillies in other ways. Now let's go and win another WFC!!!!!!

I'm disheartened by Jamie's 5+ ERA. Unless they stop you paycheck, man-up and chill in the bullpen with the fellas.

David, You do a great job covering the phillies, Moyer is a professional and a competitor did anyone really think he would be happy with the demotion. He definitely has lost a bit since last year plus he isnt getting the calls. Dave, Do you watch Tru blood, you look like the new vampire on there Godrick.

Moyer needs to shut up and act like a man. He won his championship and Carrassco could not win a spot in spring training, plus the phillies stuck to their word and gave Chan Ho Park the 5th spot they promised him when they signed him. Think how much better the record would be if we let Happ have the spot in the rotation he deserved from day 1. The Phillies have been loyal to the old man, but there are limits, and his ineffectiveness has proven detrimental to the team. Play-off baseball is much tighter then regular season, every pitch matters, and you cannot spot a team 5 runs through 2 frames and expect to win in a 7 game series. Whether or not he wins the rotation spot back this year or not, he should do the honorable thing and retire, he is stealing money this year and he is not getting any better...the phillies will not cut him, they would still be responsible for his salary, if he retires they are off the hook. The phillies would be better off bringing up Andrew Carpenter or Kyle Kendrick, who have both been extremely effective in Lehigh this year. Thanks for the memories of last year, take your ball and go home.

Jamie I have lost some respect for you. You were a great pitcher however your performance this year shows otherwise. You have the third highest era of all starting pitchers. Giving up 11 hits in five innings didn't help your cause and YES you are causing a distraction when this team does not need at this point. A complete professional would have discussed this with his boss before going public and as your performance dictated you were removed. Prove you belong. Be the best pitcher you can be.
