Phillies statement on Chase Utley

POSTED: Wednesday, March 9, 2011, 9:15 AM

Phillies Team Physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti issued the following statement regarding Chase Utley’s health status.

“Chase has had mild patellar tendinitis and chondromalacia in the past that have previously resolved quickly.  His symptoms returned during his off-season workouts, and he developed some anterior knee pain consistent with his prior history.  When he reported to spring training this year, his knee was treated as it had been in the past, however his symptoms continued.  An MRI was obtained that demonstrated his prior tendinitis, chondromalacia, and bone inflammation.  His chondromalacia symptoms persisted in spite of focused non-operative care, including a cortisone injection.  A subsequent cartilage-specific MRI was obtained confirming the initial diagnosis.  Continued non-operative treatment is being carried out and additional opinions will be obtained.”

Guess this is good news that they still don't think he needs surgery, but would love to hear that he is actually feeling better. No obvious replacement for 2B - much as people loved Valdez last year, he is no replacement for Utley's production, not to mention it now leaves holes in both the 3 and 5 hole.

"Continued non-operative treatment is being carried out and additional OPINIONS will be obtained.'' Hum, it looks to me they still don't know the seriousness of the injury. Anytime you look for "additional opinions'', it's not good.

NewMick sounds like a two pack of pacifiers a day kind of guy. Phils will be fine. Look around. Save your whining till the time Utley can't answer the opening bell. I'm guessing he will be in the lineup. People were _issing and moaning in January about Howard's 98% ankle. News flash: time and some care heal many of these problems. Pictures at 11:00.

Make a decision and move on with Utley. This is carrying on too long. It's pretty disheartening that the doctors can't find anything wrong with him but he can't play.
