More on Ibanez and Lidge and the trade market

POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 12:17 PM

Busy day here at the old ballyard. The tarp is off the field and it looks like we shouldn't have any problem getting this one in.

A quick run-down of today's events:

1) General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. gave no indication of how long the Phillies think Raul Ibanez will be sidelined for. The groin has bothered him off and on since April, but only recently began affecting his play. After watching Ibanez struggle to move in the outfield and on the basepaths last night, Amaro met with head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan and team doctor Michael Ciccotti and decided to put Ibanez on the disabled list.

As for how long he'll be out, it remains to be seen. He'll have an MRI later today, at which point the Phillies should have a better idea. Still, it sounds like they won't have a good long-term idea until he gets several days into his rehab.

"We'll find out as he goes through his rehab and does the things he needs to do to get it calmed down," Amaro said. "We'll monitor him. We'll monitor him every day and see how he feels and hopefully he'll properly and be ready in 15 days. That's the plan, that'd be great, but I don't know if that's going to happen."

2) I have a gut feeling that the Phillies will be making a deal in the very near future. Again, it is only a feeling, and it's still real early in the trading season, and I could be completely wrong, but there are some circumstantial indications. They've been taking a hard look at Boston righthander Brad Penny, who started last night. The Red Sox will have to figure out their pitching rotation at some point in the next week with John Smoltz scheduled to return to the mound on June 25. They've also got Clay Buchholz pitching his you-know-what off in the minors. The Phillies, meanwhile, have a depleted bullpen with Scott Eyre and Brad Lidge on the disabled list, and will need even more out of their starting pitching now that Raul Ibanez is gone for two weeks and maybe longer.

Former GM Pat Gillick, now a consultant, and director of major league scouting Gordon Lakey are both in town this morning, one night after Phillies scout Jim Fregosi Jr. watched Penny pitched in Boston. Just a coincidence? Could be. But don't be surprised if something happens soon.

3) Brad Lidge threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session today and said he felt great. He is confident that he will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow in Reading. Amaro said the Phillies will send him on one, but only if he feels 100 percent tomorrow. Stay tuned. . .

"We're not going to put him on the mound unless he's 100 percent and he feels like he absolutely has no soreness in there," Amaro said. "Because, again, it doesn't make sense for us to rush him unless he feels 100 percent."

Bedard can only go 6 innings a start, and is a bit of a baby. There is no such thing as a "sure thing" when it comes to a trade for a pitcher. And we can not afford to bring up yet another guy from AAA to see how he does. When you are in contention for a WS, you make a move to improve the club, you don't "hope" that a prospect can work out.

Why people keep mentioning Peavy? He is not coming here, no way. Also, he went on the DL right now and could miss 8 to 12 weeks. The Astros think they could be in the fight for the wild card – don’t they always? - and won't trade Oswalt. Bedar was scratched from his last start. Why trade for him now? He missed the last three months of the season last year and underwent surgery in September. And for Rollins? Please! Of all the pitchers available, Penny makes the more sense unless someone else comes available. Right now, Marquis won’t be available because the Rockies are playing a lot better after firing Hurdle. They won like 12 in a row. Cliff Lee could be had, for the whole minor league system. Halladay is on the DL and Toronto is only 5 games out of first place. So forget about that too.

I liked Marquis and Weaver the yr. the Cards won it all and they went free agents. Both have the mental make up for a run at the pennant plus I believe both had winning records in the playoffs and W.S. Both at the time could have been had for about 7 mil but we cheaped out or maybe that was the year we got Eaton. I like Marquis if he is healthy and with this line up behind him no telling what he could do. One thing is for sure, the Mets may be standing still but the Braves are looking to do some damage in the East standings and given the fact that Cox out manages Charlie most times it could get ugly.

The Phils have consistently found ways to lose at home. If you take away the Nat victories, they are 8-18 at CBP this season. Montgomery et al should take out a one-page ad in the Inqy and the DN, thanking the fans for coming to see games they know the Phils are more likely to LOSE than win.

MichaelJack20 -- I like your thinking. Especially since Jimmy is in his contract year next year. It would be really tough giving up his great defense but with time Donald or someone else will fill the role. A Rollins trade to the AL West has the potential to help both clubs, and send Jimmy to home turf, if Amaro could pull it off.

Did any of you guys watch the game today? Or are you guys more interested in your Fantasy baseball trades than the real Phils team going down the toilet at home?

The move is Jason Marquis. Free agent and Colorado will not be making the playoffs and looking to dump $$$. They won't not sign him long term. Marquis is an east coast guy. We need a good # 2. He's a horse. The right move next month before the AS break. Get it done !!!
