Busy day here at the old ballyard. The tarp is off the field and it looks like we shouldn't have any problem getting this one in.

A quick run-down of today's events:

1) General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. gave no indication of how long the Phillies think Raul Ibanez will be sidelined for. The groin has bothered him off and on since April, but only recently began affecting his play. After watching Ibanez struggle to move in the outfield and on the basepaths last night, Amaro met with head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan and team doctor Michael Ciccotti and decided to put Ibanez on the disabled list.

As for how long he'll be out, it remains to be seen. He'll have an MRI later today, at which point the Phillies should have a better idea. Still, it sounds like they won't have a good long-term idea until he gets several days into his rehab.

"We'll find out as he goes through his rehab and does the things he needs to do to get it calmed down," Amaro said. "We'll monitor him. We'll monitor him every day and see how he feels and hopefully he'll properly and be ready in 15 days. That's the plan, that'd be great, but I don't know if that's going to happen."

2) I have a gut feeling that the Phillies will be making a deal in the very near future. Again, it is only a feeling, and it's still real early in the trading season, and I could be completely wrong, but there are some circumstantial indications. They've been taking a hard look at Boston righthander Brad Penny, who started last night. The Red Sox will have to figure out their pitching rotation at some point in the next week with John Smoltz scheduled to return to the mound on June 25. They've also got Clay Buchholz pitching his you-know-what off in the minors. The Phillies, meanwhile, have a depleted bullpen with Scott Eyre and Brad Lidge on the disabled list, and will need even more out of their starting pitching now that Raul Ibanez is gone for two weeks and maybe longer.

Former GM Pat Gillick, now a consultant, and director of major league scouting Gordon Lakey are both in town this morning, one night after Phillies scout Jim Fregosi Jr. watched Penny pitched in Boston. Just a coincidence? Could be. But don't be surprised if something happens soon.

3) Brad Lidge threw 42 pitches in a bullpen session today and said he felt great. He is confident that he will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow in Reading. Amaro said the Phillies will send him on one, but only if he feels 100 percent tomorrow. Stay tuned. . .

"We're not going to put him on the mound unless he's 100 percent and he feels like he absolutely has no soreness in there," Amaro said. "Because, again, it doesn't make sense for us to rush him unless he feels 100 percent."

Trade for Penny. We need him, especially after Moyer's performance last night and the other ‘available’ starting pitchers dropping like flies. He was clocked at 98 against the Yankees the other day. I don't care about his attitude. Charlie will take of that, the same way he took care of Myers.

Brad Penny is a horrible, horrible decision for this team. They already have 3 back of the rotation starters (4 if you count Chan Ho) and now they're going to trade at least one good prospect for another back of the rotation guy? I'd much rather give up more for Buckholz.

I wish we could get Clay Bucholz, if he's as good as it's thought! (But I know the Sox would not part with him.) Penny seems an up-and-down kind of pitcher from what (admittedly little) I've heard about him this year, although he seems to be pitching better of late. We have enough up-and-down pitching already, so if he does come here, I hope we don't give up a ton and that he proves his worth.

I would take penny in a heartbeat, especially if the price is right. People throw out names like Halladay and Webb with no real indication that they are available (or in this case Buckholz who absolute isn't available) and also no indication of what the price would be.

Jason Marquis, 8-3, pitches in a more hitter friendly park then our own. Available for cheap.

actually, Penny topped out at 95mph against the Yankees. Never mind the fact that the guy is a clubhouse cancer, too.

Wouldn't be surprised to see them land Marquis. We'll see what happens. I think there is a good chance something happens before the All-Star break

When healthy, Penny isn't a "back of the rotation" starter. Just a few years ago he was the starter for the NL in the All-Star game. When he's right he's a solid #2 starter. As long as the price to get him isn't too high (and it looks like the Sox are motivated to move him since they've got to find a spot for Smoltz and eventually Bucholz) he would be a good pickup. His ERA is inflated by 2 bad starts, and outside of those 2 he's been very solid this year. He's only on a 1-year, 5 mil $ deal as well, so there isn't a substantial financial investment...If the price is a good, not great, prospect, by all means go get him.

Jason Marquis.....I'd love to see him over Penny, but at what price?

Any idea what we would have to give up for Penny?

I agree Varsho. If Buchholz is major league ready, how come Boston went after Penny and Smoltz? The kid has a world of talent, but he’ll be 25 in August and he’s still in AAA. We have too many young guns in the rotation; we don't need another one coming from AAA. If you look at his Minor League career Boston is being moving him up and down from AA and AAA the last few years. As a matter of fact in 2007 and 2008 he finished at AA after starting in AAA. Penny is 100-77 in his career. Besides, there is no indication Boston is trading Buchholz. Yamphy I think I read Penny topped 98 on FoxSports.com. Anyway, that's a few miles more than any of our starters. About him being a cancer, some people said that about Sheffield. He is doing ok in NY. Some are even saying is bringing some toughness to the clubhouse.

The early talk was Penny for Jason Donald. The Sox are desperate for a SS to replace Lugo and Nick Green.
