Mixed signals on DeRosa deal

ESPN’s Steve Phillips has reported that a three-sided deal that would bring Cubs infielder-outfielder Mark DeRosa to the Phillies could be imminent.
The former Mets general manager-turned-broadcaster said the Phillies would part with either lefthander J.A. Happ or righthander Carlos Carrasco plus top infield prospect Jason Donald.
They would be packaged with two Cubs prospects, outfielder Felix Pie and third baseman Josh Vitters and veteran righthander Jason Marquis and sent to San Diego for righthander Jake Peavy.
The Cubs would also sends cash to help offset the $9.875 million Marquis is scheduled to make in 2009.
Phillips, however, did hedge his report. “There’s a chance it could get done later today,” he said. “Or not at all.”

Earlier, there continue to be mixed signals regarding the rumored trade that would bring Cubs super utility man Mark DeRosa to the Phillies.
One insider said this afternoon that DeRosa remains the Phils' top priority – he could play second base until Chase Utley is ready to return from hip surgery and then could be at least a platoon player in left field – with Twins infielder Nick Punto as the back-up plan.
However, a highly placed Cubs source insists nothing is going to happen. “We’re not trading DeRosa,” he said flatly.
After spending a couple of days doing background checks on Twins outfielder Delmon Young, the 23-year-old former No. 1 overall draft choice of the Rays apparently remains on the Phillies radar, although a source said that’s not a front-burner issue at the moment.
Serious Post: Those who have talked about arbitration are correct. The Phils arent going to take on additional payroll unless it is severely backloaded. The owners want to win yes, but their primary concern is filling the stadium. After that what happens on the field is simply gravy. The stadium is full with the current roster, so they won't be adding payroll after raises are figured in. The best solution is to try to add some complimentary pieces and give young guys (that play for the league min) a shot. This will allow the Phils to keep the payroll down while seeing what they really have in Happ, Donald, Kendrick, and perhaps even Carrasco. Why sign a guy with 0 upside like Punto when you can give Donald a shot and see what happens? Sports! phillygreg

happ or carrasco plus donald is overpaying by a mile for derosa. happ and coste or jarmillo, maybe, but not donald and carrasco, the top two prospects in the system. RG- this has got to be misinfo.--maybe Carasco, Happ, & Donald for Peavy- but for DeRosa-Amaro should be fired on the spot it he makes that trade. Delvin Young is a big time headcase- sign Ibanez and Lowe & let Moyer & Burrell walk.
I'm not sure I like this deal. I would rather keep Donald around and let him and Bruntlett platoon at 2nd until Chae gets back. I would NOT trade Carassco for DeRosa. I like DeRosa, but I wouldn't trade Donald or Carassco for him. Hell, just sign Raul Ibanez for two years until Mike Taylor is ready. beeron
steve phillips is usually wrong about everything that comes out of his mouth so I wouldn't take this too serious smiggs13
First of all Steve Phillips is an avowed Philadelphia hater. Anyone who has watched ESPN and listened to Steves comments has to know that. Considering that, why would we believe him when it comes to trade rumors. It seems to me the sharks are circling Ruben, better get back in the boat and row for home. Follow Gillicks example and stand pat. Wally 24
I think I know why Amaro wants to move this young talent. These are players Mike Arbuckle helped to bring into the system and he knows talent; but he doesn't have a degree from Stanford. Bruntlett and J Donald can fill in at 2nd base. Sign Moyer or Lowe. (wait and see who Boston throws away; see J C Romero) Go for the Ibanez to help the Dobbs/Stairs/Jenkins of the world! Did I get that phraseology right, Ruben? thejerz
K-Rod signs with Mets! Remember how we all felt when Santana signed with the Mets! Who did they play in the playoffs? There's more wrong with the Mets than meets the eye. It's called chemistry; and they don't have it. thejerz
anybody know anything about the trade scott lauber is reporting? he said its a small trade a notch above the Greg Golson/John Mayberry swap. The players traded are supposedly on 40-man rosters beeron
CARRASCO and DONALD? Have they lost their minds? Frank Lloyd Wrong
Say goodbye to Coste, Fightins get Paulino from Pittsburgh efrye13

Make it work with moyer, lets get real he will take 15 million over two years and your not going to get better with that kind of money. Then just get Manny and figure out next season later, as long as he stays healthy we can trade him to the yankees and get someting in return. Rubin if you need any other help just give me a call 215-771-XXXX Stinziani
we could trade coste but we dont need another catcher Stinziani
