John Mayberry Jr.'s first big league stint was a short one. The Phillies sent the power-hitting outfielder back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley following their 5-3 win over the Padres Monday night. The move was made in advance of the activation of lefthander Antonio Bastardo, who will start against San Diego ace Jake Peavy tonight at Petco Park.
It appears that, for the time being, the team will stick with 13 pitchers once lefthander J.C. Romero is activated on Wednesday. Currently, they have 14, with lefthander Sergio Escalona the likely candidate to be sent back down when Romero returns from suspension.
Mayberry had an auspicious debut, hitting a three-run home run and a double against the Yankees. But he was hitless in his final five at-bats, only one of which occurred since the Yankees series.
The Phillies felt Mayberry was better suited playing every day in the minor leagues than sitting on the bench in the majors.
