Mayberry in fold, Escalona sent down.

I'm sure you all know this by now, but the Phillies have called up John Mayberry Jr. He will join the team tomorrow. LHP Sergio Escalona was sent to Lehigh Valley.

I'm in a hurry to hit the Jersey Turnpike, so I'll leave you with this quote on Brett Myers' pitch that he threw behind Derek Jeter's back in the first inning:

“I think that’s what we need to do as a team,” Myers (4-2, 4.34) said. “I think everyone protects each other on the team. It’s part of the game. It’s kind of like eye for an eye.”

I love the fact that they brought up Mayberry. Hopefully he can make some contact and turn some heads against the talented lefty pitching he'll be facing. Escalona has been sharp in his 3 appearances but just makes the most sense to be sent down right now. Taschner is a veteran and it's a pain in the neck to option these guys. I don't think we've seen the last of Escalona though - he filled his role while he was here and management has surely taken notice.

I love the Myers quote, but I'm not sure he should be saying that out loud, much less to the media. Didn't Jenks get fined for a similar incident?

the myers quote makes it even better, number 1 rule in baseball through 162 games is protect & support your teammates...you might not recognize it but this team is playing perfectly as a defending champion; 13-4 on the road is by far the best record on the road & they'll pick it up at home; as fans we've given them one of the best home field advantages in baseball

Mayberry is hitting around .270 in the minors and now will have to face Pettite and Sabathia. Don't expect much.

Obstat... you're dead on. It's freakin hilarious how some people think this guy is mediocre and strikes out a lot at AAA, and now will turn it on and make contact against Pettite and Sabathia. Yeah, that makes a ton of sense.

Obstat and PSU...that's just it. In this wind tunnel of a stadium, all Mayberry has to do is make contact and it will go out. Thats why he and Werth (and Ibanez who is hitting everything) are so important over these next two games.

    1) The Escalona v. Taschner issue should be a non-issue because of the "rules" Re: veterans, waivers, etc. I don't know the specifics, but that move was a no-brainer; 2)2009 Repeat - check your numbers - our road record is even better than that, I believe 15-5 now? 3)NealObGyn - While it's easy to throw dirt on Mayberry's minor league numbers, .270 is respectable for a AAA power hitter who K's a lot...Throw in the fact that he's only being brought up to DH against lefties and your argument is quite thin...Now, bring me his stats vs. lefties and if they actually suck, then so be it; Werth used to have trouble against righties - still does against the tough ones - so Mayberry needs some seasoning and who knows? 4)Re: the Utley HBP last night: I saw Burnett glare at Rollins, but our very mediocre announcers completely missed the boat when they failed to review the tape and try and determine if Jimmy showboated around the bases...Regardless, THAT HBP was a purpose pitch and, while the umpire actually allowed Myers to get his "eye for an eye" before assessing the WARNING, I would have been very happy if, around the time Brett knew he was coming out of the game, he stuck one in the ribs of either Jeter, A-Rod or Girardi (in the dugout)...The Yankees should not be allowed to get away with throwing at our best player(s) without serious retaliation, on the one hand; on the other hand, I give our boys credit for maintaining their composure and kicking those MFers' a s s e s!!! Lets trade for J. Peavy....Trade Carlos Carrasco,J. Harp,K.Drabek, and one of these four players J. Knapp,J. Donald,D. Brown,or M. Taylor. We would get one of the best young arms in the majors. We would keep him from going to the Mets or Atlanta. We can afford him because J. Tome and M. Eaton contracts come off the books at end of year.More fans are coming to ballpark bring in more $$$$. With our offence we would be unstopable. plus he is signed till 2011 mor 2012.Also Myers and Blanton are both Free agents at end of year.

You forgot peavy's no trade clause...there's no way hes going to end up on the east coast without his contract be reworked to make it more worth his while. Let alone agreeing to move to CBP from Petco, where his ERA over the last three years is a full run lower than in his road starts. On the road, he's just better than league average pitcher.
