Mayberry recalled to take Worley's spot

POSTED: Tuesday, July 5, 2011, 11:53 AM

As expected, the Phillies recalled outfielder John Mayberry from Triple A Lehigh Valley to take the roster spot of Vance Worley, who was optioned after picking up the win last night against the Marlins.

Worley, 23, is scheduled to start for Lehigh Valley on Saturday. With the Phillies this year, he has gone 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 10 games (eight starts). The move was made to keep Worley on his routine during the All-Star break, as explained in today's story.

Mayberry was hitting .265 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 28 games for Lehigh Valley this season. With the Phillies, Mayberry has hit .231 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 45 games. This marks his second recall of the year.

Mayberry, a better option than Ibanez or Martinez! Pence, Cuddyler or Ludwick better yet! Package Singleton, Cosart, and Rizzotti for any one of them.

I don't think it would take even that much to get one of those guys. Especially Pence. Ed Wade's 2 brain neurons are always accomodating.

Cuddyer or Ludwick will come relatively cheap. Pence will cost some players, and even though Wade is the GM (for now), the new ownership will be watching him like a hawk in making sure he gets fair value back on any trades.

True but the one advantage is that he's only signed through this year, and for 6.9 million. One can only imagine what he will ask for. He is certainly the prize catch for the trade deadline. His numbers are off the wall. Almost as many RBI as Howard, batting .325.

Player, he is a much better option also than Francisco. He does everything better than that guy.

you want to trade 2 of your few remaining top prospects to rent Ryan Ludwick or Michael Cuddyer for two months? just shows how bad raul has been that those 2 sound like difference makers. well, hope it turns out better than Gio Gonzalez and Gavin Floyd for Freddy Garcia.

I suppose about as long as we have to listen to that malignant schmuck Wheeler and his salivating lapdog McCarthy. All 3 are taking the joy out of watching this season.

for those who want Hunter Pence... he wont come cheaply..He's Houston's star player. The Phillies would need to give up Singleton, either Mayberry or Francisco, and 2 good arms from the minors to have a chance.. Is that worth it? I'd do it.. But will Amaro?

Are you guys following baseball closely? Michael Cuddyer just made the AS team. He's been the team's MVP the 1st half of the season with Mauer and Morneau out. Right now they have OF Delmon Young, CF Denard Span and OF/DH Jason Kubel in the DL, so they are short of OF. With Mauer, Morneu and the other guys coming back from the DL soon, they think they can still have a chance to take the division. They were more than 10 games out of 1st and month or so ago. Now they are 8 games back. I don't think they are going to trade Cuddyer if they stay that close. They have proven to be a 2nd half club under Gardenhire. The Twins had a 42-16 since the All-Star break last year, best in the majors. The .724 winning percentage is the highest mark ever by the team in the second half of a season. They have four such 2nd half surges under arguably the best manager in baseball. And if they decide to trade him it won't come cheap.

Nowhere in your other article is there an explanation as to why Worley was sent down and why Hamels is starting on short rest on Sunday in Worley's spot. Also, one of you, David Murphy or Matt Gelb, is mistaken because you report that Dubee said "Vance..." come into my office and Matt Gelb reports Dubee said "Vanimal! Come here a minute" so one of you is embellishing things.
