Just got back from the Stadium. Crazy, crazy night.

Shane Victorino and Matt Stairs were the heroes, as anybody watching the game could attest. Stairs' two-run bomb off Jonathan Broxton was the second postseason hit of his career.

The Phillies lead 3-1 and are one win away from their first World Series since 1993. They've got three chances to close it out, but you've got to think that Wednesday night is their best. Lefty Cole Hamels faces righty Chad Billingsley.

Stairs, who was mobbed by his teammates as soon as he reached the dugout, was great in his post-game press conference. He's 40 years old, joined the team in late August, just before the waiver deadline.

Now, he'll likely be a piece in Philadelphia sports lore (provided something catastrophic doesn't happen these next three games).

Among the gems is one that is surely destined for the He-Said Hall of Fame (Located down the street from the Mmmmmmm Hall of Fame).

"You want to get that one big hit where you feel like you're part of the team," Stairs said. "Not that I don't feel like I'm part of the team, by no means, but when you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you're getting your ass hammered by guys, it's no better feeling than to have that done."

More:

"I'm not goin to hit a single and steal second base," said Stairs, who clubbed a 3-1 fastball from Jonathan Broxton for the game-winner. "So I think the biggest thing is get up there, swing hard and elevate."

^

Earlier today, Victorino found out he'd been fined $2,500 for being at the center of the benches-clearing melee in the third inning of Game Three.

His two-run home run tied the game and set up Stairs' shot.

Here's a funny little bit of info from the Phils clubhouse: Victorino's home run ball came inches away from hitting rookie catcher Lou Marson in the head. The relievers at first thought the line drive was a double. Next thing you know, it was sailing into the Phillies bullpen.

That's 11 RBIs now for Victorino in the postseason.

"This is what you play for as a kid," Victorino said. "You play for it in the minor leagues. You get an opportunity and try to make the best of it."

^

How about Brad Lidge getting his first four-out save of the season?

^

That's all for now. We've got tons of coverage in the paper tomorrow. The Phillies will work out at Dodger Stadium, so I'll check in with an afternoon update on some of the goings on.

because david murphy made a point to point this out, I lose all respect for him. He takes something so good, and he probably couldn't wait to post this even before the game. Very childish of a "reporter" This must be for his high school paper.

Matt Stairs was put on this earth to hit that homerun.

Smurfie, mix yourself a nice bleach smoothie, willya? And how the hell could he post it before the game when Stairs said it after the game? If you want to read something into the quote, good for you, but Stairs said it directly to reporters. It's not like Murphy was lurking two lockers over, eavesdropping on a conversation. Moreover, why do readers always want writers to basically kowtow to the team when things are going well ("Don't write anything that will fire up the Mets/Brewers/Dodgers!") but they want writers to beat on the team mercilessly when they, the readers, perceive something halfhearted or stupid has been done? I want somebody who's even-keel and who works for the reader, not the team. The team can take care of itself.

Bring us a world championship, Matt, and I promise you all the hammering you want! And how appropriate is it that Stairs is Canadian and homers on Canadian Thanksgiving Day?

this guy is the phillies beat writer...the dude hits the biggest home run of his life and the past 15 years for this franchise, and all he posts is a homosexual reference? thats it? kinda weak. just because its a funny quote doesnt mean it has to be posted immediately. save it for later, and focus on what just happened to this phillies team tonight.

Folks, it's a blog. Yeah, it's written by the Phillies beat writer, but it's a blog, it's for extra stuff that won't make the paper, or for breaking news. It's a funny line when taken out of context, and this is the place for it, not above the fold on Sports Page 1.

I thinks its a great quote and this is more than an appropriate place for it. The headline of this blog is funny, because its exactly what I said at the time, and I am sure a million other people did too. Except for the flippin' part..
Comment removed.

Hey folks, its not WW3. Good job Murph. True baseball lovers realize it was a GAME and it was fun to read what the players said afterward.

Well said, Dcustriker. There are plenty of articles that describe what happened last night. Also, I'm actually surprised by how much content Murph posted on here since he was probably racing his articles to the press.

It's a blog, dorks, if you want your "more serious" sports news, don't read it.

Some of you are homophobes - What's the big deal? Everyone knows ball players whack each other on the behind. It's a strange sports phenomenon, but it's not homosexual. Stairs was commenting on feeling a part of the team, that's it. And Dave reported it b/c it is funny that Stairs put it into words in that way. Probably not what he'd have said in a prepared statement, but he was speaking off the cuff. Relax!

Keep up the good work, Dave and don't sweat the haters. Go Phils!

Lou Marson is having a special ML season for a Sept. call up. During that month in his ML debut he gets into the last game of the regular season and goes 2 for 4 with a homer and stays with the team as an deactive bullpen catcher only to serve as a red bullseye target for a Shane Victorino BB shot over the wall in Chavez Ravine which changes the entire dynamic of the NLCS.

I'm with Gbrettfan--it's refreshing to hear a real answer to a question--its funny as well--this is what a blog is for--an early heads up on something or a tidbit like this--Other players are so into non answers so they can't be misinterpreted --Utley's answer of thats a great question is an example--

I have to admit I am shocked. The biggest Phillies hit in 15 years and you fans are questioning a DIRECT player quote being used in a blog. The same fans that have suffered through 10 years of quotes from Andy Reid. Why can't fans in Philly enjoy the moment? The moments that are too few and too far between. Matt Stairs, "You know if I were in a better position to hit, the ball would have went a row or two deeper." The reference wasn't sexual. Did you see Burrell beating on him on the steps of the dugout? That's what he was referring to. If he said back instead of arse, would everyone be ok with it. And fans wonder why the rest of the world hates them. They don't know when or how to enjoy themselves. You people need a pill instead of a beer.

IT's a blog guys and if I'm not slightly mistaken, I think Dave meant the reference to Bucky "Bleepin" Dent and an unlikely hero comparison. Besides, when you played sports and were in that position, you don't even think that way....or did you? It's guys being guys and if your offended, watch Masterpiece Theatre instead and read some Shakespeare!

Now the Phils have to put this series away or this great game and 2 huge HR's are all for not.

Love what the Phillies are doing. But I would think someone who gets paid to watch the games and write about them would have a little more to say than this. There are real bloggers out there writing more interesting things about the Phillies with little or no compensation. This is not an indictment only of David Murphy, but of all of the "bloggers" on the philly.com sports site.

Ok - a bunch of you have convinced me I've got to stop reading these things - way too much time on your hands if you can complain about what's written in this post, instead of just enjoying one of the greatest (and far too few) Phillies playoff wins.

sadly the Phils will not win another game this year, hamels is going to get lit up like a roman candle, ramirez is mad, when Ramirez is mad Ramirez dominates

jrw723 - the "bloggers" do actually write other articles for the DN and Inky, you just have to find them in the sports section. A few of them throw out these blogs to give the rest of us a place to banter without the need of a full article.

My sister know John Marzano's veternarian's babysitter. John Marzano never cared much for the Phillies organization because they were painfully slow on their per diem reimbursement on road trips. He was very frustrated and privately rooted for NL teams to beat the Phillies for years afterwards.
