Scott Mathieson's return to the big league was brief.

Mathieson was designated for assignment today in order for the Phillies to select the contract of catcher Dan Sardhina from Triple A Lehigh Valley.

The Phillies are in need of another catcher with Carlos Ruiz suffering an injury Friday night. He was hit in the back of the head in the eighth inning and was taken to the hospital after the game.

Sardinha, 30, was hitting .254 with four home runs and 20 runs batted in over 38 games for Lehigh Valley. He has batted .323 (10-for-31, 16 RBI) with runners in scoring position.

Mathieson, who has had three elbow surgeries in the last four years, allowed two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning Friday night against Minnesota.

Every time they bring Hoover up he has to clear waivers going back down. Guess they didn't want to risk it this time. Of course I think Sardinha is in the same situation, but maybe the wouldn't mind losing him as much.

Wow, I can't believe the DFA Matheison. He might not make it through waivers. I don't think he was that bad last night.

Hoover's on the DL. That's what happens when everyone on your rosters at the ML, and AAA levels are thirty something.

Gelb says that there is a very slim chance we lose him because of some kind of loophole. He said he will explain later. There really has to be an explanation because if there isn't, then this move is asinine.
