Mathieson recalled; Bastardo to disabled list

POSTED: Thursday, June 17, 2010, 2:51 PM

The Phillies recalled 26-year-old righthander Scott Mathieson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley this afternoon after placing lefty Antonio Bastardo on the disabled list with inflammation in his ulnar nerve.

Mathieson is something of a fan favorite, having overcome two serious elbow surgeries over the last three years and rebounding to dominate at Lehigh Valley this season.

Mathieson allowed just four earned runs in 29 innings in his first 24 appearances of the minor league season, striking out 33 and walking just 10.

His most recent outing was a rough one against Buffalo, when he allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in 0.2 innings.

Mathieson features a mid-90's fastball, but the team was hesitant about promoting him before now because they feel like he still needs to prove that he can consistently throw his slider for strikes.

But with Bastardo ailing, Mathieson was the obvious choice to be promoted.

In 2006, Mathieson was an up-and-coming starting pitching prospect in the Phillies organization. He appeared in nine games that season, eight of them starts. His highlight was an eight-inning effort against the Padres on July 5 in which he allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

But on Sept. 2, he left a start against the Braves after just one batter and proceeded to have his first Tommy John surgery. He returned to appear in seven games in 2007, but underwent another Tommy John surgery and missed all of the 2008 season.

Mathieson returned in 2009 to appear in 22 games in the minors, posting an 0.84 ERA.

He participated in big league spring training this spring, but was optioned to the minors when the Phillies felt it became clear that he was not going to make their Opening Day roster.

Good for Scott, all that hardwork and rehabilitation will have paid off when he gets to walk into the clubhouse and put on the phillies pinstripes and walk out to the pen....

This kid has a great story, and has overcome a lot to get here. My best wishes are with him in his MLB career.

Kind of bittersweet news. I'm happy Mathieson will have a chance to show if he has what it takes after a rough start to his career. But he's replacing another future back end of the pen reliever. I hope the injury is nothing serious.

btw, you people clamoring for Dom Brown. Not gonna happen anytime soon. Might as well put your D-Brown Phillies jerseys away. The kid is good, and is going to be VERY good. But he's NOT READY FOR THE SHOW. All you arm-chair GMs take a seat!

Thank you Ruben. Ask Baez if he'd take a early retirement package.

EVERYONE in the world knows Howard is going to get a 1-2 slider out of the strike zone except for Rube's 25 million dollar man. The obvious result is a K against a lefty. I wonder how Adrian Gonzalez would have fared?

@ Phillyboy - "Keeping established talent on the farm makes no sense with a struggling bench." If they were as established as you seem to think they are, they'd be up here. What has Mayberry done at the MLB level to suggest he's "established"? I think Dom Brown has the goods, but he's never spent a minute in the majors, nor has he faced major league pitchers in a regular season game. It pains me to think Dobbs and G-Load still cash major league paychecks, but they haven't been displaced yet, and probably for a reason.

Under the watchful eye of Dubee, Scott will probably end up with an inflamed "whatever" because Rich teaches throwers not pitchers. Just ask Bastardo and the many others who have over extended themselves and ended up on the DL.

Phillyboy - my "old thinking" is rooted in fact. Your "new thinking" is predicated on a total lack of logic. Just because Stephen Strasburg was ready after a few minor league starts does NOT guarantee the same success for Dom Brown. It's like saying that because Kobe Bryant skipped college and did pretty well in the NBA, then Kwame Brown and Korleone Young should've done well out of high school too... how did that work out for them again? Furthermore, Strasburg played Division I baseball; Brown came out of high school. Yeah, Jason Heyward looks ready, and I want Brown to succeed more than anything. But the Phils are doing this the right way; like your parents (hopefully) always said, "if all your friends jumped off a bridge, does that mean it's a good idea for you to do it too?" And by the way, being a regular member doesn't give you the ability to be illogical and think it'll be accepted as authoritative fact. I respect your opinion; I just happen to disagree with it.

This kid deserves a great year. His stuff is still nasty and he had back end bullpen in him. Way to go Scott let's dominate and show that the phils have some stud prospects left.

PhillyboyinNYC yes it does. You'd rather have them playing everyday than coming in to PH. Only bring them up if there room on the field for regular starts. Plus who do you want to replace with those young guys?

Hopefully Bastardo is ok and not headed for the same TJ surgery. Congrats, Scott, your hard work is about to pay off.
