Manuel talks about Utley's home-run swings

POSTED: Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 11:56 PM

After the Phillies' 6-1 victory over the Yankees in Game 1 of the World Series tonight, manager Charlie Manuel talked about Chase Utley, who hit two home runs, and the second baseman's ability to hit with two strikes.

"He takes a lot of pitches," Manuel said. "He has nice balance and rhythm. His weight shift creates a lot of bat speed. He has good hands. He’s very simple [at the plate]. His bat is in a nice, comfortable position. He's had good coaching."

Manuel also talked about the Phillies' 1-0 margin in the World Series. "We won a game tonight. We got one win," Manuel said. "When we get back to the hotel, or on the bus, we’ll think about tomorrow. We’ll come to the ballpark tomorrow, we’re coming to win."

About Cliff Lee, who pitched a complete game, Manuel said: "He had them all going. He struck out 10, didn’t walk anybody, and that’s against a good lineup."

“Winning Game 1 is huge,” Lee said. “You want to get off to a good start. At worst, we can split here in New York and go home and have homefield advantage. Now we have an opportunity to take both of them here and really have an advantage.”

"About me being cool, I’ve been that way all my life. I’ve been playing this game all my life. I’ve put the work in. No sense in being nervous. No reason for me to be nervous ... Gametime is the time to go out and have fun and have your skills take over."

I think it's more appropriately, "The House that Cliff Lee Tore Down"

Wow. Chollie steps to the plate. "We're coming to win." I wonder how that's gonna play in Gotham City.

Carlton never looked as good as Lee has been in any post season game. Lee's performance is all world so far and I hope the other starters can rise up and keep the momentum going. Nice to have a win that didn't require the bullpen.

While I don't think it was at all calculated on Lee's part, but that nonchalant basket catch had to have a psychologically deflating effect on the Yanks. Sort of a, "I'm in control here. No sweat." Coupled with the behind-the-back snag and the casual, fanny-pat putout and the Bronx Bombers were toast.

Absolutely awesome. Furio, i believe you are right on the money. Carp Guy, nice post. The catch & behind the back snag were obvious. . . but i wonder how many other people took note of the "fanny-pat putout" on Posada? That was pretty awesome too. Cliff Funking Lee, yeah baby!

Watching Charlie last night after the win was amazing. He's certainly not the most eloquent speaker, but he knows baseball and he loves coaching this team. These guys love playing baseball!

Chase being Chase - we're lucky to see a guy like him all year long. Lee was magnificient. Think about it - an AL guy his whole career, sent to Triple A a couple of years ago, destroys the Yankees in their brand new playpen. He just tore the playhouse down. Way to go Ruben. A question about Fox - did anyone else notice the obsession with showing Cliff's hands in his glove getting his grip for a pitch? What's up with that? Didn't see it with CC.

Hey Ed, i noticed the shots of Lee's hand & the ball in his glove. Maybe CC happens to position himself in a way where the center field cameras are unable to get a similar shot. I wonder though.

Lets drop the conspiracy theories and concentrate on rooting for Pedro. He will have a good grip on things. Loved his press conference chiding the NY media.

yeah maddy44. Blanton in 4. Phillies in 5!!! I think Captain Cliff set the tone for this series so firmly that the rest of our staff has no choice but to follow. And the position players, ditto.
