Manuel reacts to Reyes

POSTED: Thursday, July 24, 2008, 12:09 PM

Jose Reyes may have laid the next subplot in the every-growing rivalry between the Phillies and the Mets last night when he circled the bases with his index finger raised after a sixth-inning home run last night at Shea. Some Phillies took notice, and Charlie Manuel said yesterday that Reyes has some maturing to do.

"He's a very talented player and he can be one of the best players in baseball," Manuel said. "But at the same time, he's got some growing up to do, and he's got some learning to do."

Ryan Madson, who gave up the home run to Reyes, said he did not notice the short stop's antics on the basepaths. He also said that none of his teammates have approached him about "taking care" of the situation.

But, he did acknowlege that the Mets and Phillies rivalry has grown into a case of two teams who simply don't like each other.

"I would say that's a fair statement," Madson said.

His first at bat today should have been met with a fastball to the ribs (it's Moyer, it wouldn't have hurt that much). That's the old school way....although, come to think of it, he rushes the mound on a 45 year old, it could be a bloodbath....

Exactly right, Reggie - actions speak way louder than words. If Uncle Choo Choo really beleives what he said, his pitchers should translate his words into action.

Look at the last time someone charged a 40 + year old on the mound. I think it was Nolan Ryan, he beat someone pretty good. Headlock then 4-5 fists to the face.

I read elsewhere that upon hearing about Charlie's comments, Reyes responded "I been growed up".

Reyes deserves one in the ribs. If I were Charlie Manuel I would call for it. Too bad Moyer isn't that type of guy.

Madson's next pitch after that homerun should've been in Delgado's ear (I think that's who was up next).

It is not just Reyes...it is the whole Mets mindset. They dance around in the dugout. They do all kinds of hand-jive shakes after every home run. The fact is that they have done NOTHING, except maybe choke away the division last year. No team has ever lost a 7 game lead with 17 games to play. NONE. In history. Biggest. Collapse. Ever. Keep dancing and putting up the #1 sign, you moron.

all those ny fans saying utley was classless with the eff you comment, but nothing is worse than showing up the other team like that. between that and them flipping bats on homeruns they are the most classless team in baseball.
