General manager Pat Gillick just briefed the media here at Dodger Stadium on the plans for Charlie Manuel's mother's funeral. The Phillies manager will fly back to Virginia after Game 5 on Wednesday night. There will be a viewing on Thursday, followed by the funeral on Friday morning. Manuel will then fly back to Philadelphia in time for a potential Game 6 at Citizens Bank Park.
Manuel will not miss any games. His mother, June, passed away at the age of 87 Friday morning after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week. Manuel managed the Phillies to an 8-5 win Friday that gave his team a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series. The Phillies worked out today at Dodgers Stadium, where they will square off against righthander Hiroki Kuroda Sunday night.
The Phillies are providing a charter plane for Manuel to use for his journey back home. Gillick said he expected some member of the organization to be on hand for the services, but said such details are still unclear.
Shane Victorino also spoke with the media today, one day after he learned his grandmother had passed away. While a date for the funeral is still unclear, the center fielder will not miss any games.
