Manuel talks about benching Rollins

POSTED: Thursday, August 30, 2012, 3:50 PM

It was just two weeks ago that Charlie Manuel met with Jimmy Rollins about his failure to run out a groundball against the Marlins. So when the manager saw Rollins give less than full effort on a pop fly that was dropped by Mets pitcher Jon Niese in the sixth inning on Thursday, he took the next step. After the inning, Manuel pulled Rollins from the game, replacing him at shortstop with Michael Martinez. While Rollins reached first base on the play in question, he might have had a shot at second had he run at full speed.

"It's up to me to back up what I say," Manuel said.

The manager said he asked Rollins in the dugout if he thought he ran hard on the pop fly. Manuel did not go into detail on what Rollins' response was.

My frustration grows any time I see anybody not hustle. It grows if I see the other team not hustle.

"My frustration grows any time I see anybody not hustle," Manuel said. "It grows if I see the other team not hustle."

Manuel did not say whether Rollins would be in the lineup tomorrow.

"That's between Jimmy and I," he said.

Manuel said he thought that he and Rollins were on the same page after the conversation in Milwaukee.

"The conversation that Jimmy and I had, I think we understand one another, and I hope the guys on our team understand me too," Manuel said.

Should have taken away Jstroll's sunflower seeds as well. Disgusting waching him chomp away... First choice: get rid of the cancer and trade him; second choice, bench him for the balance of the year and bring in late in games as a defensive replacement; third, move him to ninth.... Didn't see the DNL performance, but doesn't surprise me a bit about Murphy. Perhaps you need a change of scenery too, murph?

The Phillies broadcasters have been ordered by the front office not to criticize Rollins , and they were encouraged to praise him when possible . I wonder if Manuel has had similar orders and has just reached his limit with Rollins complete lack of effort .

    Is that a joke, Charlie?

Us season-ticket holders should pepper the front office for a refund. Maybe then, they will put the screws to Charlie to bench Rollins for an extended time. It's one thing to play poorly, another to not make an effort.

murph i watched you on DNL yesterday and you were just as pathetic as rollins to insist that it didn't matter! i don't know why you feel that way but with that attitude, you should be benched and traded.

In they NFL they have the PUP list. Rollins belongs on the MLB DOG list. Ryan Howard ought to just smack him upside the head.

Indeed, as others in this comments forum have noted, David Murphy's incredibly silly defense of JimMe's continued lack of hustle may indicate that he is too close to the team to report and comment objectively. But let's put aside Murphy's opinion of JimMe. More dispicable was Murphy's own disrepect toward others on the DNL panel, constantly interrupting them and talking over others. I saw a little of JimMe in Murphy's manner ...ME, ME, ME. Hey, Murph, get over yourself, buddy.

Whats sickening is the excuse the apologists like Murphy offer that "everyone does it". No they don't. Nobody does it and certainly nobody does it every play except J-Stroll. When everyone starts to do it, and people like Murphy accept it, and chalk it up as just another part of the game, thats when I stop caring and watching.

not to exonerate Rollins, but when the manager blows games night after night (and just decided to let everyone go home early by bringing in an awful rookie Rosenberg with an era over 10.00 to pitch to lefties and give up 4 runs in the 10th inning) and when the g.m. decides to go into the season with such pitiful additions and re-signings like Schneider, Qualls, Willis, Wigginton, Thome, etc, why as a player should you bother to bust your b#$% for such a joke organization? when the team was competitive and fighting for something Rolllins showed up and was often clutch, now with this piece of cr$% team he could care less..it starts from the top and when your g.m. and manager are imbeciles and mailing it in then the players start doing the same

once had high hopes for young murphy here. i know, as a former sportswriter, the pressures on a reporter to, if not sing unmerited praises of a club's management, at least to lay off more than the most tepid condemnation. still, murphy early on showed signs of being his own guy. apparently membership in The Club was too enticing. i'm not one of those screaming for rollins to be traded, but surely he needs to be placed on a spit and roasted to a crisp until the message sinks in, in, in. who's gonna do that: certainly not the chutpah-less mgr, certainly not the clueless generous manager. who then? in a just world, guys like murphy, young and tough and (in theory) nobody owns him. maybe the probe of mars will discover a just world, coz for sure there ain't such on earth. sadly.

Send Rollins to the Dodgers. He has a pop-in clause in his contract that allows him to pop-in to any roster in exchange for big bucks. Make Frandsen our new shortstop.
