Manuel talks about benching Rollins

POSTED: Thursday, August 30, 2012, 3:50 PM

It was just two weeks ago that Charlie Manuel met with Jimmy Rollins about his failure to run out a groundball against the Marlins. So when the manager saw Rollins give less than full effort on a pop fly that was dropped by Mets pitcher Jon Niese in the sixth inning on Thursday, he took the next step. After the inning, Manuel pulled Rollins from the game, replacing him at shortstop with Michael Martinez. While Rollins reached first base on the play in question, he might have had a shot at second had he run at full speed.

"It's up to me to back up what I say," Manuel said.

The manager said he asked Rollins in the dugout if he thought he ran hard on the pop fly. Manuel did not go into detail on what Rollins' response was.

My frustration grows any time I see anybody not hustle. It grows if I see the other team not hustle.

"My frustration grows any time I see anybody not hustle," Manuel said. "It grows if I see the other team not hustle."

Manuel did not say whether Rollins would be in the lineup tomorrow.

"That's between Jimmy and I," he said.

Manuel said he thought that he and Rollins were on the same page after the conversation in Milwaukee.

"The conversation that Jimmy and I had, I think we understand one another, and I hope the guys on our team understand me too," Manuel said.

I always supported J Roll, but in light of the lack of hustle, I am sour on him.
I think he feels like a Prima Donna since he visited the White House. He should realize he wasn't special. He was only a pawn in a national chess game.

Did you really just try to inject politics into this? Good God... wee-todd-it.

    David Murphy-
I saw you on DNL also. You're clearly so close to the locker room that you can't separate yourself from it to analyze the situation in an objective way. Your analysis is absolute idiocy. Rollins should be benched. His lack of hustle and disrespect FOR THE TEAM is cancerous and leads to situations like the Red Sox or the Mets of a few years ago. Notice that the team picked up when Chase Utley came back because he works hard and is a real leader. He's not stROLLIN. DAVE MURPHY, YOU CAN'T ANALYZE ANYTHING BRO. Dave Moron Murphy.

Is there anyone, anywhere who is actually surprised that Rollins played lazy yet again? He is not the greatest example of how to be a professional and a very poor example for every amateur player ages 4-64, as well. C'mon, this is baseball! You have to hustle maybe 4-6 times a game, and he cannot even do that?!!! Why did Amaro ever resign him? Jimmy is really more of a "me-first" player and has been for more than a few seasons. Watch him closely. He ALWAYS acts like he is too cool for the average person.

This wasn't an issue in '08. Why not? They won it all. If they weren't stinking out the joint, nobody would care.

Manuel is sooooooo stinking enamored with Rollins and his sub-.250 average at leadoff. MVP 4-5 years ago, was benched for NOT hustling then, yet the problem STILL arises, yet they give him a contract extension, yet STILL doesn't go all-out. What's a team to do?

Ok, most of you follow the Phils more closely than me, but has Rollins ever said why he won't hustle? Maybe he doesn't consider it lack of hustle? Or he's injured? Other than that, I think the booing is going to start and then it could get nasty...

I'm not saying he's a TO-type of problem, but any more incidents like this and the Phils should consider telling Jimmy to take off the whole month of September

I didn't see the game....how did Wheeler and McCarthy defend Rollins today? Two more homers who are afraid to say one bad word about the Phillies and any of their players. I appreciate any media person who can be objective and tell it like it is, no matter who's feelings might get hurt. At least we have Ricky Bo and Larry Anderson to sometimes give the proper perspective. I usually like your stuff Murph, but on this you are just plain wrong. Unless he is hurt, why shouldn't ANY player not hustle all the time? Why do you think this is a hardship for millionaire athletes like Jimmy?

I would love to see Jimmy stroll elsewhere...if I was king I'd be willing to eat half his salary to get rid of him. Make a statement and change the culture, the better synergy will outweigh the statistical analysis of Stroll's performance relative to the pack of shortstops.

Galvis can certainly handle the position defensively and Frandsen can play there as well. Let him go, it's time, let's develop a better center.

Ruf with 38 tonite. New Reading record. Congrats.
Now Murphy can do another too rough for the bigs article about Ruf after another suckup piece of course observing the Stroll is too good to be put on waivers.

Murph is a sportswriter, don't you guys get it? His job doesn't require brains, integrity, or writing ability.

As a partial season ticket-holder, at games I have taken to barking when Rollins is announced. He's a dog. These two incidents are only the most recent; he's been dogging it for months. About time Cholly decided that's enough. Who needs a .240 leadoff hitter? Watch Utley and Juan Pierre bust their asses on bouncers to second and Rollins looks even worse.

His name is " waterboy Murphy ", and today's little love poem to his lockerroom Bull establishes his waterboy legacy forever. To me, it's a joy to see the guy so totally out himself.
