options

Just three more hours to go before the trade deadline.

Here's what we've got thus far:

1) Manny Ramirez is not an option, unless the Red Sox wrap him in paper, put a bow on his head, and give him away to the Phillies. The Phillies aren't just shooting down the Ramirez reports privately to the media, they have told the Red Sox they don't have strong interest.

2) George Sherrill and Brian Fuentes likely aren't options. The Rockies have played there way into semi-contention, and any deal to get Sherrill would have to be huge.

3) If the Phillies land a lefty arm, it will likely be either Pittsburgh's John Grabow, San Francisco's Jack Taschner, or Kansas City's Ron Mahay.

4) Reading short stop Jason Donald is a guy several teams around the league like and could be a nice bargaining chip now or in the future.

5) Pat Gillick said the Phillies were not interested in Tiger-turned-Yankee Pudge Rodriguez.

6) Jayson Stark is reporting over on ESPN that the Cardinals would be willing to part with Kyle Lohse for the right price.

What's the right price? A dopey reliever like the Yankees gave up for an All-Star catcher?

Would the right price for Lohse be Joe Blanton? If not and they want Donald, make them take Adam Eaton as well. We should never have allowed Lohse and Rowand to leave! Ownership are a bunch of cheap tightwads!

enough about Lohse - the Phillies offered him 3 years @ $21 mil - so just stop it...

So basically, the Phillies have taken the same stance they take this time every year ... "We would love to improve our team, but we aren't paying anything to do it. Give us your All Stars for nothing." ... ... another "close-but-cigar" season for Phillies fans. They will either miss the playoffs by just a game or two, again, or make it in, and be one-and-done, again... the people who run this organization have no spine.

Sorry, that should say "close-but-NO-cigar", obviously.

I've said before and I'll say again, if we can get Lohse for the right price take him. This time he'll sign in off season. Even if not, worth a few prosepcts and maybe Werth to get into playoofs and beyond.

They cannot get Lohse... the Cardinals are not looking to sell. They want to improve their lineup and bullpen, and they think with the returns of Carpenter and Wainright they can afford to part with Lohse. But the Phillies are looking to improve their own bullpen, they are not selling relievers, and they aren't really looking to part with a major league bat, either.

Can the paper trade Jim Salisbury to a paper in Pittsburgh or Washington or Detroit?

David Montgomery believes J.A. Happ is the answer. He only costs a couple pennies.

Hey, anybody else know anything more about that report regarding Hamels yesterday (small broken bone in pitching elbow)? It may have been a rumor - which I hope, but, the source from which it came, is usually right? Anybody? Thanks and be positive people

Eskin is full of it, and Hamels already said that he couldn't pitch with a broken arm.

G Varsho, so you did hear that. Yes, I take everything that Eskin says with a grain of salt, but why would he report that? I know, I know, he hates the Phils and is a paid employee of the Birds, but still. I'm extremely happy that it's not true, just surprised that it was reported on a major radio station (no promotion) in the area.
