Magic Numbers: Five and Eight
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer

On the elevator this morning I was talking with Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy about last night's game. It's amazing how big one win can be, even though it is only one win. A loss last night, and the Marlins are suddenly 3.5 games out, with a chance to cut the margin to 2.5 today. Now, regardless of what happens today, Florida will be no better than 4.5 out with six to play. So you can effectively eliminate them from consideration.
Right now, the magic number to clinch a playoff berth is five. That's the combination of Phillies wins and Brewers losses it will take. Eight is the magic number for the division. But right now, let's just talk about playoffs. The way Milwaukee has been playing, it shouldn't surprise anybody if the Phils are able to clinch before the off day Thursday.
I want Comcast to show more respect for the Phils. You know, coverage of them in their post, season should take preference over the other sports in town who are just beginning their seasons! Wally 24
I want a parade down Broad Street. Anything less is a failure. PhillyCooke
No HOF for Jamie Moyer. Tommy John won 288 and he can't even get voted in by the Veterans Committee. Jales- Jamie Moyer is the best pitcher on this staff but he has no shot at 300. I'd like to see him get to 250 and beyond next season then retire and become the Phillies pitching coach. jlamb

- Phils will male the playoffs. No doubt given the math. The issue is WC versus Division lead. If they win the division and Mutts get the WC, they open in LA. If the reverse, Phills open in Chicago. I'd prefer LA. A great situation would be Phils win the east and Mildew comes back and takes the wildcard by luck/some ort of skill. Sheets is out and CC can only pitch twice in a full series....better yet Phils win the east and there is a one game playoff for the WC and Sabtahia wins. Phils would face a toothless WC team. Bone
- If the Phillies are tied with Milwaukee for the wildcard then there is a one game playoff in CBP. Now, I don't know the scenario where the Mets, Phillies and Brewers are all tied. I guess the Mets are Division Champions and the Phillies and Brewers fight for the wildcard, because that's the best Milwaukee is going to do anyway. EL Zorro
- Craig and Wally 24. A couple of weeks ago, we were discussing in this forum which lost was more devastating, a late inning lost to the Cubs or a similar lost to the Mets during the same period. Some people said the Cubs lost, because it was a late inning meltdown. I said the Mets because they where in the same division and in case of a tiebreaker, they win the division because the head-to-head record. At that time, we had a chance to tie the Mets with that win and by sweeping the next 3 games. Then you have to go by the other tiebreakers, record in the division, etc. With that lost that scenario was eliminated. EL Zorro
the_other _craig *** thanks for the heads up. I honestly didn't know that was the way a tie got settled. There have been 1 game play offs in the past if memory serves but the circumstances for them I don't remember. BrianF ** you could have saved yourself a lot of research and the metaphors. You did get half the point. Look around any ball park and how many wild card flags do you see? None! The only possible award is the LCS & World Series. No tean & no player starts the year hoping only to be second best. Wally 24
NO WAY MOYER GETS TO 300!!! sorry for the caps, but we might only see a handful of pitchers more get to 300...in the current system with 5 pitcher rotations it is just too hard...anyway, I am astonished that Moyer has been so productive this late in his career...btw, are you the same Sean Breslin that went to high school at LC??? joey2times
I think Moyer is right about 50th on the all-time win list with 244, putting him around names like Wells, Mussina and can't forget Mordecai Brown. Who knows, he might end up with as many as 300 total wins, which almost guarentees HOF. SeanBreslin

Wally, if the Mets and Phils tie and both are assured of going to the playoffs, no one-off is necessary. The division champion is then determined by head to head record. That would make the Mets east champs. How about another smart performance by Moyer? How many more years do you think he wants to play? He's probably thinking about another two year deal just so he doesn't have to stare down the retirement question two seasons in a row. If he picks up another 25-30 wins is he a Hall of Fame candidate yet? the_other_craig
We want a world champions flag. That is the only thing that will do. Theo1980- "There are no flags for Wild Card"? Tell that to the '07 Rockies, the '06 Tigers, the '05 Astros, the '04 Red Sox (WS winners), the '03 (and '97) Marlins (winners), and the '02 Angels (winners) and Giants. Ya gotta be in it to win it, that's all. Chip and a chair, dollar and a dream, and other similar applicable metaphors. I think your point is, we'd rather win the division to host the Dodgers, rather than play as the wild card in Chicago - no doubt I agree with that... Brian F.
Dave I hate to say it but we can go 6-2 and NY can go 6-3 and we end in a tie for 1st. I'm not crazy about having to play a one game series against them with Santana in their arsenal. We should not be thinking of anything but winning the division period. In spring training thats one of the goals not the wild card. There are no flags for wild card. Offensively I think we have the better team but we may not get the pitching match up we want because of having to win 7 of the last 8 to prevent a tie. Wally 24
