Well, at least one part of the strategy going into tonight's abbreviated Game 5 has been revealed.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel announced that righthander Ryan Madson will pitch the top of the seventh. Madson has allowed only two earned runs in 12 postseason innings.

Rays catcher Dioner Navarro is scheduled to lead off the seventh.

More later ...

I am surprised that Manuel revealed this. I wouldn't have. In fact, I might have said someone else on purpose if asked. Why let your enemy know what to expect if you don't have to. Do you think Maddon is going to tell us what he is going to do?

Charlie's really hoping to get some runs on the board right away, isn't he? I would think he'd save Madson for 8th or even 9th in case of a tie. That's what Mitch Williams and Ricky Bottalico suggested last night. I like Charlie's optimism for our offense as well as our defense/pitching; personally, I am nervous. But that's the lot of a fan, I think. We have nothing to do but second guess, worry and watch. Oh, and pray! Go Phils!

Oops, when I said Charlie's hoping, I meant Charlie's confident of - Naturally we're all hoping! And I was surprised he announced it, too, doesn't give him leeway to change his mind (unless he's told the pitchers to anticipate such a possibility depending on how the bottom 6th goes). I guess he figures it'll be more or less obvious when everyone sees Madson warming up. Still, he'll probably have a few guys warming up just in case. I'd be mum, I'm sure Madden is.

I wouldn't start Madson unless the Phils score in the bottom of the 6th. The bottom of the line up is up for the Rays. If it is tied, I might go with Romero and Durbin. If they take the early lead, then I am more for it. I certainly wouldn't have announced it before the game in any case. Also remember, this game might go extra innings.

I'm not surprised. Isn't Navarro a lefty, and hopefully if we've got a run in you need to start protecting that with the best you've got. Both he and Lidge are well rested so they can do an inning+ if needed.

Does't matter, Greg Dobbs (or Matt Stairs, or Geoff Jenkins, etc) will lead off the bottom of the 6th will a HR, followed by 3 more runs! Phinal score: Phitin's 6, Rays 2. GO PHILLIES!!!

Why not start off with Hamels batting in his spot? Since eveyone is worried about who Maddon will bring in, let Hamels come up. #1, he may get a hit as much as anyone else. #2, if Maddon changes pitchers, the Phils won't waste a pinch hitter if they send up Dobbs or whomever only to have Maddon switch pitchers. I'd start Romero first, then Madsen, then Lidge.

who cares that charlie announced it - you don't think the rays will see madson warming up in the pen 20 minutes before gametime?

I was thinking along the lines of mike I- put Hamels in the on-deck circle and then pull him back. Just to freak the Rays out. I guessed correctly that Jenkins would get the nod. I also thought that if Price were to start I'd put So Taguchi out just to show everone what Prices was throwing, a toss away at bat plus one of those deals where someone unlikely would come through. If he walked or got on he has the speed for small ball.
