The Phillies have reached a multiyear deal with Jayson Werth, although exact terms of the deal are yet unknown. SI.com is reporting that it is a 2-year, $10 million deal, with $3 million this season and $7 million in 2010.

Werth was eligible for free agency after this season. He had asked for a $4 million salary in arbitration, while the Phillies had offered $3 million. Werth made $1.7 million last season, when he produced the best season of his five-plus year career, hitting .273 with 24 home runs and 67 RBI.

Werth still must fly to Philadelphia to take a physical.

Righthander Chad Durbin signed a 1-year deal worth $1.65 million. He had asked for $1.95 million and the Phillies had offered $1.35 million.

The signing leaves only first baseman Ryan Howard from a group of arbitration-eligible players that intially numbered 10.

Good move by the Phils and Werth - he sacrifices a year of free agency for a higher salary than what he asked this season and security for next. Phils go over Werth's arbitration number this year to lock him in for an additional season at what hopefully will be a discounted rate. Meantime, I found this laughable - Jeff Franceour asked for $3.95 million after batting .239 with 11 HR and 71 RBI. Werth asks for $4 million after batting .273 with 24 HR and 67 RBI (plus 20 SBs). Franceour's agent is crazy.

9 for 2 years is too much in comparison to the 3 or 4 he would have gotten in arbitration.

ESPN reports that it's 3M for 2009 and 7MM for 2010. That's a ridiculous raise. And sets up for more than 7 the following year. He has had one good season. I would've settled for one year at 3 or 3.5 and see how he does this year.

Yippee, I guess. Agree with mmd that the second year raise seems like a bad idea. Ryan Howard however is a pig. This idiot wants $4 million more then Pujols!!!!! Arbitrate and sign it, but ship this bloated pig out this season while he may still have some value. I personally will boo him lustily every single at bat from April thru June, when he will be brutal to watch as usual. Does this guy read a newspaper? Get your fat a** to the gym, come to camp in shape, contribute for all six months, and maybe I can stomach this for another year. This will have a cancerous effect on the team in the short and long term. I would love him to explain to Utley why he thinks he should get twice the $$$. I don't want to hear all the rants about baseball economics, merchandise sales, etc. If you think this is reasonable, you have never played a team sport or run a business.

MMD, you might've settled for $3 mil this season but Werth would not. $3 mil in 09 guarantees that second year - he would not have done a one year deal for $3 mil, and would've been a FA next year. As for the $7 mil setting him up for an even bigger raise - the market will set his price based on performance, not on his past salary (see Burrell, Pat). God you're whiney.

Hey Genius, the name bigredmachinefan is all you need to know. Ignore anyone who roots for the enemy. Howard has more homers and ribbies over the last 3 years than anyone. We should PRAY he stays in Philly.

hey tpizza, what are you 3? The Big Red Machine was a 70's team from my hometown. The enemy. Maybe you should coach or send your kid to Sayre HS so you can throw down at a game. RBI's are a particularly over-rated stat, and while Howard had one good month in September, where was he in October? And your buddy Genius obviously doesn't know we have Utley and Rollins signed to long term deals. They are getting there's now, and it's half of what Howard now thinks he deserves as a mere shadow of Pujols and Texiera.

bigredmachinefan, wow i was going to let your nonsense go until I read this particulary bright statement-RBI's are overated. Stop writing emails, stop pretending you know baseball-you are just a bozo. The only way to win is to knock in runs- you are an idiot.

tj, Werth would settle for 4 this year. Phils offered 3. Settle somewhere in the middle, like 3.5. If he became a free agent, would he have gotten more than 7 in 2010? He only has 1 good year. "$3 mil in 09 guarantees that second year". What does that mean?
