Madson activated, Schneider starting

POSTED: Thursday, July 8, 2010, 5:14 PM

Here's a stat that I find amazing: More than halfway through the season, the Phillies' bullpen has accumulated just 200.1 innings. To put that in perspective, the team with the next-fewest number of innings in the National League has 227. The National League average is 250 innings.

This factoid is worth mentioning because the Phillies activated Ryan Madson from the disabled list today. Tonight is the first night he will be available to pitch out of the bullpen since April 28, when he broke his toe kicking a chair after blowing a save in San Francisco.

Part of the reason that Phillies' relievers have gotten so little work is Roy Halladay, who has logged an NL-leading 139 innings while pitching seven complete games. But it's also possible that Charlie Manuel has been sticking with his starters longer than he would with a healthy bullpen.

Regardless, Madson is back, and Manuel said today he expects him to resume his duties as the primary set-up man in the eighth inning while also filling in at closer when Brad Lidge is unable to go.

Brian Schneider is in the line-up for the first time in a week. He said yesterday he's unencumbered by the sprained thumb he suffered against the Pirates.

Now they are starting to get healthy. Polanco, Bastardo, Happ and Ruiz should all be healthy soon, too.

Never thought I would be this excited about Mad Dog coming back...very telling about how pathetic this team is right now.

Uf the Phillies are going to call themselves contenders, they should get Octavio Dotel from the Pirates.

They can't send down Herndon. He was a Rule 5 pick up. They would have to offer him back to his team from last year.

Did Madson get paid when he was out because of his stupidity?

With a little more seasoning, Zagurski should be able to help the Phils. He struck out 3 on Tuesday amd just threw one wrong pitch to Hinske. Forget the slider, Bronco, and give him the heater. Sardinha also looked very good defensively. He needs more work at the plate, but he has a powerful stroke when he makes contact.

onthebucks - Sardinha needs to learn to hit off speed pitches he looks like Pedro Cerrano against a breaking ball. At age 31 I doubt that happens for Sardinha without Jobu's help. "Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come."

Should have kept Bronco, a lefty, for better balance in the pen. He's got a live fastball and should be decent in his role. Let Herndon go in the Rule 5.

Madsen is the set-up guy. Zagurski will be back later. If Madsen and Lidge pitch well this is a whole different team.

Herndon was a rule 5 pick. PhillySports23 gets dumber by the day. Good thing Amaro AND Wade are both smarter than PhillySports23.

Worst managing job by Charlie to-date in his Philly tenure. The stat above illustrates perfectly how bad his managing decisions have been. With SP's like Blanton and KK, who have shown consistently to get hammered in the 6th and 7th innings, he waits and waits and waits and waits to take the pitchers out AFTER trouble has already caused runs to be scored. There are ten games off the top of my head in which I watched Charlie bring the SP back out there for the 7th inning and end up giving up runs, and this is after he let the SP hit for themselves in the bottom of the 6th. He's been terrible, or nonexistent, with double switches, and don't even get me started on his tendency to roll out there this ineffective lineup over and over again, keeping Howard in the 4 hole out of pure principal. He keeps trying to force a 2 hole hitter to do things that nobody on the team can do except Polanco, and even he stopped doing it after the 1st month of the season. And poor Roy's arm will probably fall off three weeks before the season ends when he notches his 20th Complete game. Yay, go Phils!

If Lidge saves this game it will be a miracle, becausew he and the rest of the bullpen are awful. Madson won't help he just blew the lead/

Yes, Lidge just blew it. Predictable. One could have called it when it was announced he was coming in the game. The team should experiment and turn Happ into the closer for the remainder of the year and keep the current rotation in its current state.

3-3 after 9. Yep, sure is nice to have Madson and Lidge available for the 8th and 9th innings.

JASON WERTH YELLS AT A FATHER AND HIS SON FOR GRABBING A FOULD BALL. THE BALL WAS IN THE STANDS, NOT IN THE FILED OF PLAY..JASON WERTH IS ANOTHER SPOILD ATHLETE WITH NO REGARD FOR THE PEOPLE WHO PAY HIS INFLATED SALARY...THESE ALTHLETES BETTER REALIZE THAT IF NO ONE GOES TO THE GAMES, THEY DON'T MAKE 15 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR OR WHATEVER OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY HE IS GOING TO BE ASKING FOR...I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING SO DISGRACEFUL IN A LONG TIME

Nice line for Lidge: two hits and a walk. God knows how many runs he would have surrendered without the double play. Hasn't this guy proved yet to management's satisfaction that he can't do the job anymore? Can they deal Werth, who has given up on the season and the team, for a closer?

Manuel was reported saying Ibanez had a 2 year contract and needed to starty and that D. Brown was not ready. Phils coaches have a hard time evaluating talent as Utley and Howard were held back because they thought startters should play. Base running by Victorino and Werth was not low minor league standards. Contracts with Lidge and Ibanez will keep them in the lineup regardless of there performance. The Phils are a team without focus and leadership.

Having seen Herndon on numerous occasions this year, I can't decide if he's more Tom Seaver or Orel Hersheiser. What a keeper!

'if only madson and lidge pitch well' is as realistic as 'if either Juan Castro or Wilson Valdez get become a .300 25 hr guy in Utley's absence" or "if Jamie Moyer can gain 25 mph on his pitches and avoid the 5 run innings' or "if Joe Blanton can show to the world that he is Cliff Lee's equal by routinely going 8 or 9 innings with 2 runs or less" or "if Ryan Howard can only learn how to hit lefties and breaking balls, and get his power back" or "if only Ol Chollie can be given a tutorial about general baseball strategy" or 'if only the GM hadn't traded away Cliff Lee and had improved the bullpen" .. all nice wishes like the tooth fairy, etc

Glad to see Madson picking up right where he left off. Another wasted performance after a solid start by the rotation. Is it me, or in TV shots of the bullpen, are the starters deliberately not talking to the relievers? Cant blame them.
