Madson activated, Schneider starting

POSTED: Thursday, July 8, 2010, 5:14 PM

Here's a stat that I find amazing: More than halfway through the season, the Phillies' bullpen has accumulated just 200.1 innings. To put that in perspective, the team with the next-fewest number of innings in the National League has 227. The National League average is 250 innings.

This factoid is worth mentioning because the Phillies activated Ryan Madson from the disabled list today. Tonight is the first night he will be available to pitch out of the bullpen since April 28, when he broke his toe kicking a chair after blowing a save in San Francisco.

Part of the reason that Phillies' relievers have gotten so little work is Roy Halladay, who has logged an NL-leading 139 innings while pitching seven complete games. But it's also possible that Charlie Manuel has been sticking with his starters longer than he would with a healthy bullpen.

Regardless, Madson is back, and Manuel said today he expects him to resume his duties as the primary set-up man in the eighth inning while also filling in at closer when Brad Lidge is unable to go.

Brian Schneider is in the line-up for the first time in a week. He said yesterday he's unencumbered by the sprained thumb he suffered against the Pirates.

Now they are starting to get healthy. Polanco, Bastardo, Happ and Ruiz should all be healthy soon, too.

Never thought I would be this excited about Mad Dog coming back...very telling about how pathetic this team is right now.

Uf the Phillies are going to call themselves contenders, they should get Octavio Dotel from the Pirates.

They can't send down Herndon. He was a Rule 5 pick up. They would have to offer him back to his team from last year.

Did Madson get paid when he was out because of his stupidity?

With a little more seasoning, Zagurski should be able to help the Phils. He struck out 3 on Tuesday amd just threw one wrong pitch to Hinske. Forget the slider, Bronco, and give him the heater. Sardinha also looked very good defensively. He needs more work at the plate, but he has a powerful stroke when he makes contact.

onthebucks - Sardinha needs to learn to hit off speed pitches he looks like Pedro Cerrano against a breaking ball. At age 31 I doubt that happens for Sardinha without Jobu's help. "Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come."

Should have kept Bronco, a lefty, for better balance in the pen. He's got a live fastball and should be decent in his role. Let Herndon go in the Rule 5.

Madsen is the set-up guy. Zagurski will be back later. If Madsen and Lidge pitch well this is a whole different team.

Herndon was a rule 5 pick. PhillySports23 gets dumber by the day. Good thing Amaro AND Wade are both smarter than PhillySports23.
