Madson still believes Phillies made offer

We'll probably never know for sure what, exactly, went down between the Phillies and Scott Boras this offseason. As you probably remember, long-time set-up man Ryan Madson had been under the impression that Boras and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. were closing in on a deal worth $44 million over four years when the Phillies announced that they had signed Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year, $50 million contract.

Boras believed that Amaro had verbally offered the deal, and Madson had decided to accept. But no offer was ever put into writing. Amaro, for his part, denies that the Phillies ever made an offer.

Now, Madson is in Cincinnati after having signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Reds. He will be a free agent again after this season. The veteran righthander recently told CBSSports.com that he still believes the two sides had a verbal agreement.

"I can't prove it. But I do believe it," Madson said. Boras has '"been in the business for 20 years and it's never happened before.'' Madson also pointed out that Boras would have nothing to gain by concocting an offer that never happened.

Madons also said that he has moved on.

"I'm actually glad I'm here," he said. "It's been a nice change so far. I'm really not looking back. I wouldn't have changed it for the world. It is what it is. Everything happens for a reason. You can't make plans. Only one person can make plans.''

And he does not appear at all distracted by what happened, or did not happen.

"There's a handful of theories,'' he said. "I never figured it out. But it became pretty obvious they wanted to go in a different direction. So I just moved on to see who else was interested. Thankfully, the Reds came into the picture.''

Borax has no reason to lie he says? How about he lied to cover up his failure to get you a deal during the most important offseason of your career?

I wouldn't trust Boras for a second. Boras is just trying to cover his arse for selling Madson down the river with a bogus strategy.

If staying a Phillie was more important then cashing in he never would have hired Boras. Boras tried to play games and got burnt.

Scott Boris is a fantastic agent representing his players. However, one tactic that Boris has used in the past is to mention a "mystery team" with a better offer. It has worked many times before. In this instance, I believe both sides. I truly believe RAJ made a verbal offer of 4 years, $44 million. I also believe that Ryan Madsen wanted to accept the offer to stay in Philly. I also believe that RAJ was told that a "mystery team" was in the bidding and that the $44 million "may not be sufficient" to land his client. I also believe that RAJ made an offer to Papelbon who immediately said yes. I also believe that AFTER it was leaked that Papelbon agreed to the 4 year $50 million dollar deal, Boris came out to say, "hey, we had a an offer of 4 years $44 million". I still haven't read where Scott Boris emphatically stated that he (the agent) accepted RAJ's offer. I may be incorrect, but it usually comes off as stating that Ryan Madsen accepted the offer. Semantics maybe, legally binding, not w/o the agent's confirmation when he represents the player in these legally binding agreements. In the end, most of the times, Boris clients get the big bucks. Some times, when the market is overestimated by the agent, the player gets what the open market allows (Baily traded to Bosox, Papelbon signed by Philly, Marlins sign Bell, and of course, the Nats waited to get their man, Lidge). Have a great week Philly Phans.

And the only thing that anyone knows for sure is that the Phillies vastly overpaid for Papelbon and now won't be able to get the much needed bat. That is the real story. No one was gong to offer Pap much ore than Madson got.

Cliff Lee (winter 09): rube's a liar; Madson: rube's a liar; Lidge: Rube's a liar: Assistant g.m.: Rube's an incompetent boss impossible to work for; rube's track record: highest payroll, dozen prospects lost, nothing to show for it but an injured old-aged home with no talent under age 32 after Hamels leaves

UncleStosh--you're wrong there--all it takes is for one team. There was a theory making the rounds that the reason why Madson didn't get signed is that he had only been a closer for last year--before that, whenever he stepped into the role, he blew more games in save situations than he saved. Meanwhile, Papelbon had been the game's best closer NOT named Rivera and had a 6 year trackrecord includiing a WS title as a closer. The rumor making the rounds is that the owners were unhappy with Montgomery making Madson such an offer and they retracted it and promptly signed Papelbon. Of course, if you've foloowed RAJ's short history with the Phils he has to have the best of everything--he traded for Halladay--who was the best RH pitcher in the game; he traded for Oswalt, who was the best pitcher available at the trade deadline in '10; he signed Cliff Lee, who was the best FA pitcher available last offseason; and he traded fro Pence, who was the best young available at the trade deadline. Is there no surpriose he signed the best available closer this offseason???

and Madson will be much much much better than "fly ball --that's outta here" Papelbon -- particularly in the long-term

Madson made a mistake not signing the offer asap. Reds will likely not sign him and will trade him in July.

Glad he is gone, at least we won't have to listen to his whining wife about the the fans of Philly. Enjoy Cincinnati, which is akin to playing in Cleveland, and being surrounded by rednecks.

Gee just glad Ryan didnt kick a chair or something when the verbal deal fell through cuz he's soo mature. My guess is RAJ told Scot Boreass dont try to shop this deal and he did just that so RAJ wne t and paid more to Papelbon to thumb his nose at Boreass and his client. Big market for his mercurial talents huh
