Madson still believes Phillies made offer

We'll probably never know for sure what, exactly, went down between the Phillies and Scott Boras this offseason. As you probably remember, long-time set-up man Ryan Madson had been under the impression that Boras and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. were closing in on a deal worth $44 million over four years when the Phillies announced that they had signed Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year, $50 million contract.

Boras believed that Amaro had verbally offered the deal, and Madson had decided to accept. But no offer was ever put into writing. Amaro, for his part, denies that the Phillies ever made an offer.

Now, Madson is in Cincinnati after having signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Reds. He will be a free agent again after this season. The veteran righthander recently told CBSSports.com that he still believes the two sides had a verbal agreement.

"I can't prove it. But I do believe it," Madson said. Boras has '"been in the business for 20 years and it's never happened before.'' Madson also pointed out that Boras would have nothing to gain by concocting an offer that never happened.

Madons also said that he has moved on.

"I'm actually glad I'm here," he said. "It's been a nice change so far. I'm really not looking back. I wouldn't have changed it for the world. It is what it is. Everything happens for a reason. You can't make plans. Only one person can make plans.''

And he does not appear at all distracted by what happened, or did not happen.

"There's a handful of theories,'' he said. "I never figured it out. But it became pretty obvious they wanted to go in a different direction. So I just moved on to see who else was interested. Thankfully, the Reds came into the picture.''

If you read what Boras said at the time very carefully, he never said the Phils made an offer. What Boras said in the media was that they told the Phillies they would take a 4 year/44 million deal. There is a world of difference between telling a team what kind of deal you'd be willing to accept and that deal being on the table as an official offer from the team.

Phillies do not like to deal with Boras, If Massing wanted to stay a Phillie, he would have used another agent ask Jason Werth

There's a certain agent (coincidentally Madson's) who routinely lies to clubs when negotiating new contracts, like when he told the Nats he had serious offers for JWerth, when there was only a half offer for half the money from the Phils and no one else. The Nats bit, and overpaid tremendously to get him. This agent plays games like that all the time. Amaro played a better one. There's no telling exactly what went on, but you can bet Amaro listened to what they wanted and made his pick among the two. No games. Paps made up his mind quickly and Amaro moved quickly. Good for him, good for us.

It's not rocket science here. When your idiot agent puts you in the 40mil market, The Phils had to look around to see who else they could sign with that kind of money.

Ryan's a good guy, we'll miss him. Papelbon better bring his A game.

Madson is talednted, but did any of you really feel confident about him? He is a nervous, accident waiting to happen. Maybe P-Bon will not convert every save, but prefer his approach any day

The reason the Reds are favored in the NL Central is because Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols are no longer playing in that division. It has nothing to do with Madson.

    Mad Dog got a screwing.
I've never liked Papelbum and his stupid face, but it appears I'm going to have to eventually like him.
    I'd much prefer Mad Dog.

Boras would have nothing to gain by concocting a story?!
He just lost his client millions. He better say something that makes it sound like something other than incompetence.

I just think that the Phillies don't like dealing with Booras. When Booras drives his family through one of those jungle theme parks the lions roll their windows up.
