Line-ups for today and tomorrow

POSTED: Thursday, March 11, 2010, 12:14 PM

The weather is warm and damp, and the sky is gray, and the lights are on at Bright House Field at 12:08 in the afternoon. But the tarp is off the field and there is no rain falling, so there doesn't appear to be a reason why today's Grapefruit League game between the Phillies and the Tigers will not be played.

Jimmy Rollins has the day off, while Chase Utley is back in the line-up after a two-day absence.

Starting today's game is Joe Blanton.

Here's the Phillies' line-up:

  1. CF Shane Victorino
  2. 3B Placido Polanco
  3. 2B Chase Utley
  4. 1B Ryan Howard
  5. RF Jayson Werth
  6. DH Raul Ibanez
  7. LF Ben Francisco
  8. C Brian Schneider
  9. SS Freddy Galvis

  3. 2B Chase Utley
  4. 1B Ryan Howard

Murph, realizing it's early, but Werth (.154, 6K in 13AB) and Ibanez (.125, 2H in 16AB) are taking their time gettin' going; while Brown and Mayberry have started respectfully. Again, that's the whole point of Spring Training... but something for us to monitor other than the 5th starter and bullpen races.

Randy....are you kidding me with that comment? These guys had 5 game slumps like that last year during the REGULAR SEASON and both had great numbers last year. Your'e worried about them having numbers like that in the first 5 games of SPRING?

not to nitpick - but you used "hear" when it should be "here". Also, you have one too many "and's" in the first sentence.

ST is time for the guys like Mayberry and Brown to showcase themselves as Mayberry is trying to make the team and it may be the only time Brown swings in front of Charlie all year. Guys like Werth and Ibanez are working on different little things to prepare themselves for a long season. You couldn't possibly be suggesting that Brown and Mayberry be looked at as threatening the jobs of Werth and Ibanez, could you?

No, I wasn't trying to reach any significant conclusions with my observation. I guess no matter how many ways I tried to preface my statement ('realizing it's early...', 'that's the whole point of Spring Training...') I wasn't going to avoid this tangent...

With the opening day roster now set with the announcement that Moyer will be the 5th starter, I like to look at off beat stuff at ST. Yesterday it was Chase Utley watching Brad Lidge throw over at Ashburn Field. To me it said if Lidge does not have a comeback season no matter what I(Utley) do, it is not going to make much of a difference. Today it was after the game was over and a wind driven rain was starting to come down only Mathieson and Gillies remained along the seats down the third base line signing autographs for desparate fans. They are the type of guys you want on any team.
