Brad Lidge was unavailable to close out tonight's 13-11 Phillies victory over the Nationals because he was suffering from discomfort in his knee, according to a team source. As a result, Scott Eyre pitched the eighth inning and Ryan Madson got the save in the ninth.

About a week ago, Lidge underwent an MRI on the knee, which was negative, according to the source.

UPDATE: Phils manager Charlie Manuel said the problem was "inflamation" in the right knee. He said the MRI showed "no structural damage," and that Lidge is listed as "day to day."

We need Lidge, Madson got it done but he's the 8th inning guy. We got to have Lidge out there. I got to say, this team has some amazing chemistry. Ibanez is really such a good guy, I am so glad we have added a class act and a great veteran presence to the clubhouse. What a game tonight, 2 slams and another come from behind win. That was one of the best Phillies games I've watched, b/ci knew they would win, but just didn't know how. Keep it going Phils!!!

The phitens feel like a defending WS champion that is getting a feel for defending and repeating...If the starers ever get their s**t together this team may run away with the division. Would that be phun or what?!?

Starting pitching is going to hinder this club. Blanton has fallen of the table since spring training. By the Dave, Carrasco and Kendrick are dealing down on the farm....maybe PArk, Myers, and Blanton need to look in their rear-view mirrors and see that Happ, Carlos, and Kyle are closing in.

I watched him close out the game in FL the other night....it looked like the knee was bothering him then on a few pitches where he almost caught his cleats on his delivery home. Swelling doesn't just develop inside the joint. It's a reaction by the body to stress and workload that the body doesn't like. Even though the MRI showed "no structural damage", the knee has already been damaged and had surgery and will never be completely healthy...there will forever be some arthritic changes, wear and tear, etc. He and the Phils will just have to manage it and if it means resting periodically and scoping every few years to clean out a little more debris, then that's what will have to be done.

Hopefully nothing to worry about with Lidge. Remember last year he started on the DL and look how the season ended. Don't mind them being a bit cautious this early in the season.

I'd rather it be a knee problem than an arm problem. Madson is capable to fill in, but clearly this team is better with him as the "bridge to Lidge" - it just sets the rest of the bullpen up better.

This explains why Lidge's mechanics have been off. Once Romero gets back and into the swing of things, this bullpen will be back to normal. Too many guys pitching out of their roles and trying to do too much has thrown off the bullpen somewhat. If we can just get the starting pitchers straightened out, we'll be in great shape.

I was there last night. If you want that type of drama every night with your closer than your nerves are much better than mine. Madson is no closer! Anyone who thinks differently should look at his era. Better get someone in here quickly.

Why has there not been an article or anything written about the fact that Moyer is at career win 249, and can get number 250 this Saturday against the Mets?
