Closer Brad Lidge had surgery Wednesday to repair his flexor pronator tendon, but the Phillies said in a statement that they are hopeful the righthander will be ready "close to Opening Day."
Lidge, who blew 11 saves and posted a 7.21 ERA after going 41-for-41 in save opportunities in 2008, kept the periodic pain in his elbow under wraps during the regular season.
"Brad could be one to two weeks behind in spring training," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement, "but, overall, we feel very good about his recovery time."
Get well soon, Brad. BlairW
So we need to add a closer-type to start the season and be our insurance....right? lionpres

Next to go under the knife = Madson. Needs to get his "deer in the headlights-itis" removed. mick314- That's going to be major surgery, Mick. EL Zorro
Interesting...this went from him just having loose bodies in his elbow, to having full blow tendon surgery...I wonder if he kept this to himself all year. If he did, it was really stupid to do so. Phils need to find a guy who has closing experience to spell Lidge next year. jphil
Really? Lidge of all people was pitching hurt all year? LIDGE? Who struggled so mightily? LIDGE!!!??? Someone needs to be fired over this. maximusud
Why on god's green earth did he keep it "under wraps." And under wraps from whom, Charlie and the coaches, or did they too keep it under wraps? I can't believe the latter. And if Lidge kept it under wraps and kept blowing saves, he's the one who should be fired. If Charlie and the other coaches kept it under wraps and kept sending him to the mound anyway, THEY should be fired! pj katauskas
Ask the doc to tighten his loose screws while on the op. table. randy_w
It may have been nothing more than Lidge was favoring his right knee and due to a different arm motion he compentsated leading to this injury. My guess this came about mid season. If he had the procedure then, he would be gone for the season. bluejfk
Lidge was pitching with knee pain all year which everyone knew about. He was rested 2 different times for it and his mechanics were adjusted to compensate for it. So if he was also hiding a small amount of periodic elbow pain, then there's no way anyone would have suspected more because everyone knew he was hurt with the knee anyway. A lot of pitchers that get injured hide their pain. It happens all the time and happened with several pitchers on our staff this year. JimG
maximusud: I hope you aren't supervising other people at work. You'd be a real killer at that. judas_priest
Thanks, Brad, and anyone else who knew, about which I can only speculate and suspect. You and your physical ailments transformed a thrilling comeback an potential victory in Game Four of the World Series into into a disheartening defeat, and with it the World Series, as well. PHANPHOREVER- I'm with Phanforever--thanks to Brad Lidge and Chad Durbin for pitching during the season with physical problems you hid from the Phils' own medical people. And thanks Brad for almost taking Ryan Madson down with you as he struggled mentally and physically trying to fit into the closer's role while you were on the DL. Either way, you almost totally ruined his season also. At least Scott Eyre was more honest about his injury. Now, finally we have a bonafide scapegoat for the 2009 season: BRAD LIDGE. Don't you dare come back next year until you're ready, you idiot.
- He'll probably be ready in May, April at the latest.

You guys who are bashing players for playing through injuries are just morons. These guys are competitors. They are going to try and get it done regardless of what is ailing them. As bad as Lidge was, no one else stepped up to take his spot when given a chance. Turn it around.. what would you guys be saying if Lidge played through his injuries and blown only say half of his saves? Bottom line.. Let it go. Sseason is over. Problem with the people still angry with the Phillies losing the WS is that they can never leave the past in the past. They remember the 2008 season and EXPECT it to repeat. But hey.. if you want to stay angry and bicker about what's been done, go ahead. LOL.. it's your ulcer. roque32
Now for the non-rant... I would love to see the Phillies pickup either Gonzalez or Soriano from the Braves. roque32- This wasn't Lidge's fault for no one in general public not knowing, the phillies keep lid on injuries all season. The phils front office people are famous for not sharing this type of info. The front office thought they could get by with these injuries. You are all pathetic for blaming Lidge for season failure. The phils lost cause they did not hit, where was howard? Utley had 2 good games, Werth/ Victorino? Nothing. Cut Lidge a break. thebaron
lionpres, jphil --- Agree totally. It just makes sense. Even Fragile Pysche Brad would have to admit that. Bottom line: I'm tired of all our weaknesses being SO GLARING. Still, we went to the WS. It only takes some smart re-tooling from here. robjan
This isn't good news. Ben Sheets had the same surgery and missed the year. from ESPN..."torn flexor tendon in his right elbow. He underwent surgery last February, with a projected recovery time of six to 10 months." scootch
A healthy Lidge is 1 of the best closers in the game. He needs to heal and get-back-Loretta in the time machine to 2008. We be back with a vengeance. brinkmang- Hope the best for Mr. Lidge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By-the-way you say he blew "11 save" opportunities. That is only the tip of the iceberg! He has over 30 horrible relief outings this year. The eleven horrible outings just does not sum up how horrible he was.
