Lidge returns, Baez designated for assignment

POSTED: Friday, July 22, 2011, 2:17 PM

Reliever Brad Lidge has been added to the active roster for the first time this season.

To make room for him, righthander Danys Baez was designated for assignment.

Lidge, 34, has missed the entire season due to a right posterior rotator cuff strain suffered in spring training. He was originally placed on the disabled list on March 25.

Over an eight-game rehabilitation stint between single-A Lakewood and double-A Reading, Lidge went 0-0 with a 3.52 ERA, two walks and 10 strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

Baez, 33, was 2-4 with a 6.25 ERA in 29 appearances this season. He went 5-8 with a 5.81 ERA in 80 games in his two seasons with the Phillies (2010-11).

Baez has pitched once since July 6. For the season, he's come into the game with the Phillies ahead by less than five runs just twice.

Danny, thank you for that 5 inning masterpiece against the Reds. Other than that...well...yeah, I got nothing.

Not suprised to see that the first three comments are wishing Baez a less than fond farewell. Lets hope we can find a good non closing role for Lidge to finish out the season.

Frankly, I would like to see BL be able to do ANY of the various tasks needed done by the guys in the pen! If it winds up he's the best to be closer, that too. But, he's hardly going to surpass the two who are in that role at the moment!

What's to like about Raul Ibanez, Ross Gload and Ben Francisco's game? Make no mistake, we still have some dead weight to shed.

Herndon and Carpenter are no better or no worse than what passes for long and middle relief in the league and I would argue much of the perception of them being bad is because Madson ,Bastardo and Stutes have been so good that the fans are kind of spoiled. If you watch other games or remember all prevous Philly seasons we have never had a better all around pen than we have right now. Also some of Herndon's problems as well as Carpenter to a lesser extent has been the way they have been used. Much like Worley got messed up for a while I think the same thing happened to Herndon. Don't forget too how long some of these guys have had to sit without getting in a game like Perez was up almost 2 weeks before he got his first chance. Same is true for Carpenter and others. It is hard to stay sharp when you don't get much work. As for Danny Baez he sure had nice hair.

Don't forget to add, thanks for your brilliant five-inning performance in the big huge 19-inning game.
It looks like that was the best we'll ever get out of Baez, though, unfortunately. The rest is downhill.
Now, what about Herndon? He's got to be next to get rid of. Or do we keep him to be the guy who pitches when the Phillies are ahead by 13 runs or more?
