Lidge returns, Baez designated for assignment

POSTED: Friday, July 22, 2011, 2:17 PM

Reliever Brad Lidge has been added to the active roster for the first time this season.

To make room for him, righthander Danys Baez was designated for assignment.

Lidge, 34, has missed the entire season due to a right posterior rotator cuff strain suffered in spring training. He was originally placed on the disabled list on March 25.

Over an eight-game rehabilitation stint between single-A Lakewood and double-A Reading, Lidge went 0-0 with a 3.52 ERA, two walks and 10 strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

Baez, 33, was 2-4 with a 6.25 ERA in 29 appearances this season. He went 5-8 with a 5.81 ERA in 80 games in his two seasons with the Phillies (2010-11).

Baez has pitched once since July 6. For the season, he's come into the game with the Phillies ahead by less than five runs just twice.

A diminished Lidge is still more effective than a fully healthy Baez. I don't hate the guy, but with the exception of the 19-inning game against the Reds, he's given up at least one run in 14 of his 29 appearances this season, most of them coming after April.

Baez was the King of Fixing Madsons Mechanics and served as Bastardos Translator Hope this doesn't impact team. Oitching was Poor Probably more mental..

And why the comments about David Herndon? He is a ground ball pitcher, which is what you need in CBP!

I thought it was going to take a ton of bricks to fall on Raj and Cholly to get rid of Baez. It's long overdue.

ok, so looking ahead...his role will likely first be relatively low leverage stuff....up or down 1-3 runs in inning 6 or 7...after that, if he does well, I could see him pitching some 7th and 8th innings...all depends on how well other guys do and how fresh stutes, madson and bastardo are....road games he could wind up pitching 9th inning ties as well...let's hope he can throw his fastball for strikes and hit his spots with it....doesnt really matter how fast he throws it....its his show pitch along with his get me over slider...if he can get ahead, his good slider will still be effective. What he cant do is come into the middle of an inning w/ a fast runner on in a running situation...unless there are two outs and he is just looking for a quick punch out.

I sure hope Lidge does well, but I'm not expecting a whole lot. Tough injury to come back from, that rotator cuff tear....

Outstanding! Now even worse than Baez, is that two headed pitching monstrosity called Herndon/Caprenter! Even Jason and the Argonauts would have trouble slaying that beast. Ruben, please deep six those two and fast! Two bad you can't pawn them off on the Braves or Giants....but wait a minute, unlike the Phils management, they are NOT dumb enough to fall for that one:-) If they are around come play off time......start taking Maalox and Pepsid.

Herndon has not been completely ineffective, is basically adequate for one-sided games. It's really too soon to make a final evaluation of Carpenter. He's only pitched 6 innings this year and 16 in his MLB career. There's a guy in Pittsburgh who was just as bad as Carpenter in his first year and is now an All-Star closer with 28 saves and one blown save- Joel Hanrahan. But I agree that he should be in the minors now.

With his talent for high numbers, DanyBoy is finally able to go forth with his CPA career.
