Knapp placed on seven-day DL

POSTED: Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 3:09 PM

What's this? A piece of news not relating to Pedro Martinez?

Phillies prospect Jason Knapp, a second round pick last season who is one of the hottest prospects in the Phillies system, was placed on the seven-day disabled list with shoulder fatigue. The righty, who turns 19 later next month, is 2-7 with a 4.01 ERA at Class A Lakewood, but has struck out 111 and walked just 39 in 85 1/3 innings. He last pitched on July 11, when he allowed six earned runs in just 2/3rds of an inning, prompting the club to shut him down.

Knapp is eligible to return this weekend, but will likely miss at least another week. The condition is not considered to be serious, but it is newsworthy considering the fact that the Phillies are hoping to make a play for Blue Jays righthander Roy Halladay. Toronto assistant general manager Tony LaCava has been scouting in Lakewood for the past week, while the Blue Jays have had scouts sprinkled throughout the Phillies' minor league system.

Knapp visited Phillies team doctor Michael Ciccotti in Philadelphia yesterday -- wonder if it was before or after the Martinez physical? -- and was given a "clean bill of health," according to assistant general manager Chuck Lamar.

Blueclaws catcher Travis D'Arnaud is also a rising prospect, although he has struggled at the plate at times this season.

Knapp, whose fastball reached into the upper 90's, is one of the three players speculated to be "untouchable" in any trade, although general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has not said publicly whether Knapp falls into that designation.

So far, most of the speculation has been centered around Drabek, Happ, and a garage-sale-bin of other "prospects" (or more correctly, those minor-leaguers being hyped by the Phillies and their PR arm, the "journalists" of philly.com). ... People, no team is going to trade a coveted commodity like the best pitcher in baseball for an assortment of might-bees, could-bees, and miscellaneous organizational fodder. The prevailing opinion on this website is if the Phillies overwhelm with QUANTITY, then they can get Halladay without offering equal QUALITY. ... Don't be surprised if (in addition to Happ OR Drabek) the Phillies part with either Victorino or Werth. In the larger picture of obtaining a stud pitcher like Halladay, parting with a GOOD (but not a STAR) starting major-league outfielder makes sense. Victorino and Werth are both having career years, and will never be higher in value. With Taylor and Mayberry both in the wings, it makes sense to part with a PROVEN BIG-LEAGUE outfielder to get Halladay. The Phillies have more than enough offense. Losing one of those 2 will not be a setback, if Halladay can be obtained. ... Those of you who think Happ and Drabek have unlimited and as-yet-untapped upsides should be ok with that, since we've already seen Victorino's and Werth's peak.

mikemike, YOU have already anointed Knapp as a "stud"? How long has he been pitching? What kind of competition is he facing (other than your nebulous "older prospects")? What pitches does he have? Throwing a ball at 98 mph doesn't make one a "prospect". Any major leaguer can hit a fastball (possibly even Bruntlett!)

mikemike, ...AND, he walks 4 batters per 9 innings! ... (Do you work for Philly.com?)

Mabe not chief, but when your #2-#5 starters are Blanton, Happ, Moyer, and Martinez, and you have expectations to at least GET to the World Series, then having THREE all-star outfielders is a luxury you can't afford to hang on to, if you can package 1 in a trade to significantly upgrade your rotation. A #1 pitcher is not going to come without SOME major-league starting players in return, and Victorino and Werth (while popular), are not part of this team's nucleus.

I wish I knew as much about the absolute futures of each of the Phillies minor league prospects as jman does... and actually had the time to stay tuned to this message board for 6 hours to read any replies. Oh, shoot... I FORGOT to ACCENTUATE all of my big words by writing in all caps.

Let's go get Halladay. I wouldn't mind Oswalt as an alternate. But who will we trade? No one other sap would ever want an 18 year old fireballer who has walked 4 batters per 9 in his 1st full season in pro ball...... if Knapp is even on the other GM's radar yet.

jman ... you're embarassing yourself. Baseball America ranked Knapp one of the top 50 prospects in all of baseball just last week. He probably has the best arm in the Phillies system. If you think the Jays aren't going to ask about him in a Halladay deal, you're nuts. If you had a clue about baseball, you'd probably know better than to get all worked up over the won/loss record of a young pitcher (those of you booking your rooms in Cooperstown for the Happ & Savery inductions, please take note). Knapp is one of the youngest guys in the league, but he's been absolutely dominant at times this year. So, yes, his tired shoulder is newsworthy.

What are you dopes talking about? The major league average for walks per 9 innings is 3.4, so Knapp ... as a fireballing teen-ager ... is very slightly above average. But he also only gives up 6 hits per nine innings, which is way below average. In all, he has allowed 1.19 runners to reach base per inning pitched this year. That's a better rate than any starter on the big league staff (including Happ).

jman- it's worth mentioning because the article clearly states that Toronto's general manager has been scouting in Lakewood. Although we won't know for sure, but unless we have another phenomenal prospect in Lakewood, he was most likely there for Knapp.

This whole concept of "untouchable" prospects is nonsense. Half the game is talking up your prospects, building hype, and increasing their value. The Yankees were masters of this during their World Series years. Every year they talked up their huge can't miss prospects then dealt them for the players they need to win now. The only player they traded who worked out in a big way was Alfonso Soriano, and he was the last one they dealt away of the bunch. Ricky Ledee, D'Angelo Jimenez, Drew Henson, Zach Day, Jake Westbrook, Ed Yarnall, and Homer Bush were all "prospects" who were in deals that acquired players named Roger Clemens, Chuck Knoblauch, David Justice, and Denny Neagle. The Yankees won 3 straight WS and appeared in a 4th with those acquired players. How about CJ Henry, Matt Smith, Jesus Sanchez, and Carlos Monastrios? Better known as the 4 "prospects" the Phillies got for Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle. The Yankees have been masters of selling thier own product as better than yours. The only players Cashman has traded away that ended up as better than average MLB players were Mike Lowell (nothing to say Cash got killed in that deal) and Soriano (and to be fair they got A-Rod back in the Soriano deal). Have others been major leaguers? Sure. But ask the Yankees if they'd rather have Christian Guzman, Eric Milton and Jake Westbrook (all top prospects at the time) or Knoblauch, Justice and the 3 WS they won. Teams who take quantity over quality almost always lose in the end. If the Phillies package up some players it's likely that a couple will reach the majors. It's unlikely they will be Hall of Famers. If that gets you the top pitcher in the AL and wins you 2 more WS noone will care what happened to the prospects.

Also, for thos einsisting that we will trade an OF off the roster. We can't deal Werth now because we need his RH bat. That means Victorino would have to go and the Jays have 100 million and like 4 more years tied up in Vernon Wells right now. They also have Travis Snider and Adam Lind in their system as corner OF. They need SS/3B and C along with power arms. Their organizational needs may place higher value on Marson and Donald simply because they need players at those positions and are not blocked by unmoveable salaries like Wells'
