Amaro hints trade possible by weekend

POSTED: Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 1:33 PM

In what area have the Phillies most underperformed?
Pitching
Hitting
Managing and coaching

Righthander Kyle Kendrick was optioned to Triple A Lehigh Valley today by the Phillies and righthander Andrew Carpenter was recalled from the Iron Pigs, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

Amaro said that Carpenter is heading for the bullpen and hinted that a trade for a pitcher is possible before Saturday when Kendrick was next scheduled to start.

“In the short term this makes us better because we have an extra pitcher in the bullpen," Amaro said. "And that’s what Carpenter’s here to do. We will fill Kendrick’s spot in the rotation, whether it’s from within or outside the organization, we haven’t decided yet.

“Happ is a possibility. He’s somebody we could consider and we have some other balls in the air.”

That was followed by this exchange:

Question: It sounds like you’re close to doing something.

Amaro: “I think we know exactly what we’re going to do. I just choose not to tell you.”

Question: So you think a trade is close?

“I think we have an idea what we want to do.”

Kendrick, 25, was 5-4 with a 4.82 earned run average in 20 games (18 starts) this season. Kendrick allowed seven earned runs in five innings in the Phillies' 8-4 loss at St. Louis on Monday night.

Carpenter, 25, was 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 18 starts for Lehigh Valley. In the major leagues, he has a 9.45 ERA in one start for Phillies. This is the second recall of the season for Carpenter who was also recalled on April 3. He did not appear in any games before being optioned back to Lehigh Valley on April 8.

Awesome now I can sleep better tonight knowing they still haven't made a move to upgrade the team and the failure of Ruben Amaro and staff for over valuing what they had going into the season.

Happ is clocking out at 86mph as his fast ball thats why he is not coming back up. And he is getting shelled.

I would guess Happ may be getting traded or isn't quite ready. Carpenter could be used as a spot starter or long man for the next week or so. Phils don't have any days off for awile so I would assume more moves are coming

kendrick is not a major league pitcher, good move. when he gets guys out it is due to sheer luck. i never saw someone throw flat sinkers before, but kendrick perfected it.

the right move would have been keeping him at AAA and had Lee pitch for us and not the rangers/mariners. But I know it was important to get those big minor league pieces, you suck Amaro Jr.

Why don't they just announce that Happ needs Tommy John? Shouldn't take this long to regain strength in his arm and get his velocity to a Major League Level. When will The Rube swallow his pride and admit his mistake with Ibanez and bring up Brown? It's OK Rube, you took a shot. The guy is spent. Bring the young kid up before the season slips away.

i love how people turn the team's failure thus far into an attack on Amaro about the Cliff Lee trade. Yes, it was a bad move, but unless Cliff Lee is a complete stud corner OF bat, or a doctor capable of magically curing all our injured players, than we'd only be 2-3 games better than where we are without cliff.

I wouldn't expect to see Happ at all this season. Guys velocity is way down and he is getting slapped around. He's been pitching for quite a while now since his return, and no progress at all. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he got shut down for the season and needed surgery.

kendrick is gone and will never return to the Bigs. Carpenter is no better, however, and Happ looks like a Tommy John surgery away from returning. No need to mention which Phillies official helped to put us in this mess by choosing Halladay over Lee because of money to be paid down the road. Fortunately, Hamels is returning to form, but the minor league system has little pitching help above single A.

A 7-6 record (Carpenter) against AAA players, many ML rejects or career minor leaguers, is not a good season. How about Vance Worley, who has pitched 17 consecutive shutout innings sandwiched between a scoreless inning in the AA AS Game. Nonetheless, I think they should have given Kendrick another chance. Why? Since April, he had a 5-2 with a 3.64 ERA in 12 starts before last night game. The Phillies were 8-4 in those 12 starts. He threw a complete game against Pittsburgh in his penultimate outing before the break, then allowed just one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings against the 1st place Cincinnati team in his final start of the 1st half. But guess what, the first game coming out of the break was given to Moyer. Charlie and Dubee seem to like playing games with young pitchers while keeping a senior citizen in the rotation. Go figure.

Now if you bench Ibanez and/or Werth, you may start waking the team up and they may realize it's not 2008 or 2009 anymore.

Thank God KK is gone. Even when he pitches well I don't feel comfortable watching him. On a side note, Ibanez has 6 hits in his last 13 ABs and a SB. He is now batting a whopping .252. Hopefully this is the start of something.

This was long overdue. I was expecting Happ to come back up in his place though (and yes I'm aware of the struggles he's been having). Low velocity or not, he's gotta be better than Carpenter. Maybe the rest of you are right though, and this is just a stop-gap until a trade is made.

Phillipe Aumont is 21 years old. He was a 1st round pick a few years ago. He was a starter for 2 years in the minors, then a reliver for one, then back to starter this year before the Phils admitted they should not have started him in AA, where he'd never logged starters' innings. Anyone who thinks he has no shot at ever playing in the bigs should take a look at the careers of a couple guys named Halladay and Lee. They didn't get it right away either. Not saying he'll actually be as good as either of them, or actually turn out to be good at all, but to write him off this far into his minor league career is absurd.

Thanks whatsthe411, I was starting to think I'd go 10 minutes before someone whined about Cliff Lee. And please, if you want to whine about the team at least spell the player's names correctly. It adds a bit of credibility to what you say. Please understand this: Lee would not change this team from where they are in the standings. Moyer was slated to be in the bullpen when Happ went down, and he has 9 wins. How many more would Lee have if he were in the rotation instead? GET OVER IT ALREADY. I said it before and I'll continue to say it...if Lee were here all of the bashers would be saying how much he sucks. Some people are only happy when they're unhappy.

@Zorro - you think Worley is ready to pitch now from AA? That's what they did with Kendrick a few years ago and he turned into a mess. And 7-6 is an irrelevant stat, especially for a minor leaguer. His ERA is 3.41 and his WHIP is 1.27. Good, not great, and better than watching KK implode in half his starts.

leeal02, And bech who? There's no way we can get a stud corner OF bat while paying another OF huge money to sit the bench. That's why everyone's making a big deal about Lee. If you can't improve the offense, then the only way to get better is to improve the pitching. What they need to do is bring up Brown, for one. Seriously, if you're going to bench Ibanez like they did the other day, wouldn't you do it for Brown instead of Ben Francisco?! He needs to be up here. And everyone knows they need another starter, esp. since KK got sent down and if the Happ rumor is correct and he hasn't hit 90 yet, we're screwed. I love Carpenter for the Phillies...in the bullpen. I don't see him as a starter at all. I also heard they're looking at John Buck at catcher from Toronto, which makes sense. I like Chooch as much as the next guy, but if you can move him for a better hitter (and a guy who doc is still comfortable with), you have to do it, especially if the price is right.

B in DC. I don't know if he is ready or would be. I guess we won't know now. Carpenter had his chance last year (and ERA over 9), although it was in limited action. I guess, because he was with the team at the beginning of the year, the Phillies didn't have to burn another option on him and didn't want to start the clock on Worley, either... BTW, the billionaire cigar guy doesn’t give a sh*t about the Phillies. If he ever did the team would have been his by now.

@Joe WS, Amaro said just a few days ago that Happ was steady between 92 and 95 MPH. It's not his velocity, it's his command right now.

leeal02 --actually 3 games better and phils would be tied for wild card lead.....more seriously a stud pitcher (which Halladay has not been ) would porbably have changed the entire team atmosphere and attitude this year --and I would suspect that the Phils would be some 10 games better even if some of the injuries occurred (and its interesting that Utley injury occurred when he was pushing it because Phils were losing --who's to say that he might never have been injured if the Phillies had a pithing staff led by Lee and not-as-good Halladay (who got blown out by Yanks, redsox, twins and cubs)....its all speculative but the one thig thats clear is that amaro inherited a team that won world series and had great prospects and now has one that has an expensive and truly atrotious pitching staff (which is the product of his contracts and extensions: Moyer, Blanton, Baez, Contreras, Herndon, etc) and only one prospect of note to speak of, while he gave up the one pitcher who is head and shoulders above anyone here ....

cg- you believe what amaro says??? They showed the highlights and said Happ's velocity was not great. Happ never hit 93-95mph all of last year. He is not a fastball pitcher. Happ won't come up for another 3-4 weeks if he keeps up giving up tons of runs. He'll get surgery at the end of the year.

@leeal02, Good post!! You are absolutely right, run production and injuries have been the biggest problem. We would be in no better position with Lee, so get over it people. To you people talking about Happ, the velocity isn't the problem. In his last two starts he has hit 92-95 on the radar gun, but his control has been atrocious! Be informed before posting nonsense!

2-3 games better? ha! i doubt it. 1) phils would have given him more runs in NL East then Seattle. 2)No DH 3)improved chemistry after more wins. I would bet that if phils had Lee, the phils would be tied, at worst, with Atlanta going into the second half. then if the phils got healthy in the second half, we'd be right back in the hunt for red october.

We all want to see Happ back with the Phillies. If he was right, they would have called him up today. Can you say "Tommy John" surgery. My gut feeling tells me he's going to need it, and the sooner the better so we can get him back sometime next year.

Leeal02, I sure hope we don't miss the playoffs by 2-3 games. I find it funny that having Lee as #2 and Hamels as #3 starters translates to only 2-3 games. The Cliff Lee trade is a disaster, a complete and utter disaster. Amaro is getting far to much of a pass. Why did it have to be done when it was done and for that disgrace of a package

God, I am so tired of hearing "Cliff Lee... Cliff Lee!" Cliff Lee would not make this team that much beter this season. Maybe they'd be 5 games out instead of 6. When the Phillies were 10 games over .500 and leading the division by six games, where was Lee then? With Utley bating .260, Victorino batting .250 and Werth doing his best imitation of one of the CBP statues watching third strikes, tell me what Lee would do. When the Phillies strike out 14 times in one game, 8 looking, when they have scored less than three runs in 44 games, when they have come from behind to win like three times this season, what would Lee do to help? Unless he's in there hitting every day and driving in runs, nothing.Forget Lee, he's gone. The Yankees all but had him wrapped up, but are they crying about not getting him? No, they are playing winning baseball. This is basically the same team that went to two World Series and they've had Halladay the whole season. If not having Lee is the root of their problems, then they don't deserve the fans' respect or support. Time for the Phillies to act like Major Leaguers.

Who does Amaro, Jr have to trade. There is nothing except Brown in the minors that teams would want and he only has Werth, Victorino and Francisco who are worth trading from the roster without breaking up his core hitters. Why would he trade for a fourth or fifth starters when he need a 2 or 3 starter?

Utley wasn't having a good year when he was injured but he was starting to pick it up. He had hit in 9 of his last 10 games and raised his ave 21 pts. .277 for Chase is low but even when he isn't hitting well, he still managed to get on base..his obp was in the .380's. Rollins and Victorino need to follow his lead and get on base any way they can so they can steal and get in scoring position so we can manufacture a couple of runs per game. Hopefully, we won't be too far back when Chase returns and he'll help us win games against the East in Sept and Oct.

If Lee would have won us six more games we would be tied for rifst place right now. The Lee Trade Killed the Chemistry of this team. It is one of the worst trades in Philly sports history and now king Ruben wants to trade Werth for another starting pitcher when we had one of the Best in the game Lee. What a disaster.

We move Dom up to play right and insert a proven top of the order arm to the staff, and if Rube was really going to put his cajones on the line, he would try to bring Pedro back as well. It could be the injection of life this team seems to be in dire need of. I think you try to line him (either Haren or Oswalt) up after Doc and Hollywood, then follow with Moyer and Pedro (Blanton for now).

Anyone ever think that Ruben was told by ownership to choose one or the other, Halladay or Lee. Now that they made him do that he is getting destroyed by everyone but can't throw his bosses under the bus. He answers to people also. Get over the Lee thing. Rollins, Utley and polanco have played about 13 games all together this season. Without the injuries, maybe the lineup would hit and no one would be talking about Clifton Lee because we wouldn't be in 3rd place. Think about the bats in the beginning of the season! Now maybe Ruben can somehow get 2 roys at the top of our rotation, that would be quite nice!

It's taken me a little while to realize it, but Amaro isn't a very good GM. Ibanez was a mistake of David Bell proportions. Love Howard, but he overpaid him and for too many years. The Lee trade was a consensus mistake... even if you had to deal him everyone agrees Aumont and Gilles aren't nearly as good as what Seattle got for him.

How about trading Amaro for a GM with foresight?

Halladay trade burned up the chemistry, allowing Cliff Lee to leave and putting Jason Werth in limbo, who gets picked off and since he hit a 450 ft homer a month or so back, can't hit the ocean if he was standing in it. Polanco for big bucks compounds Lee/Werth money and chemistry issues. Raul needs to go somewhere where washed up 38 year old players go to. Jamie Moyer/KKendrick/Joe Blanton stink. So Amaro learns the hard way. 8x sell outs and counting.

"Why don't they just announce that Happ needs Tommy John?" That's probably coming next. As for Ibanez, no way they're going to eat his contract. He's not doing badly enough for that. Werth has ruined any chance of the Phillies resigning him with his poor hitting. He's also killed his trade (or rental) value. Dom Brown will be called up soon. The only question is who he replaces. Could be Werth, could be Victorino. Could be Ibanez if the Phillies trick some team into taking on at least part of his contract.

"I choose not to tell you?" Amaro sure is an arrogant little worm, isn't he? The Phillies will long rue the day they passed over Mike Arbuckle for this little Michael Corleone wannabe.

A trade may or may not be close---who knows. I'd like to see Dan Haren come but it would cost too much. Could make it a huge trade but they'd have to part with some of the "core" (Utley??). For those clamoring for the return of Pedro...he's done. Word is he hasn't even picked up a baseball since the world series. You really want him on the team?

It's amazing how arrogant and pompous Ruben Amaro Jr. is. If the Phillies owners are serious about competing for the World Series title every year, then they need to ditch him. Otherwise, this franchise is about to become eastern PA version of the Pirates.

The weekend may be too late with the way the Phils are playing. They could be 8-9 games back before saturday rolls around. I hope Amaro senses the urgency.

Unfortunately it doesn't really matter. Just forget about this year. The season is a nightmare and Dany Baez should keep pitching because he is paid a lot of money! He is truly a total waste of money. SEND HIM TO THE MINORS. HE CAN'T PITCH!

Amaro is in a fantasy world if he thinks the Phillies will contend this season. The GM's faulty judgments in trading Lee, signing ineffective relievers, etc. have come to haunt him. The Atlanta GM Wren is laughing all the way to the playoffs.

Yeah they have no heart. As if the last 3 years of comeback baseball didn't happen. Cliff Lee isn't the problem morons. They can't hit with bench players starting for the last 4 months. They are 11-2 with the lineup they projected to have this season. Had they been healthy all year, they'd have 60 wins by now. Chalk it up to injuries probably mounted from playing about 3 months worth of postseason baseball the last 3 years and get over yourselves. Idiots. They'll STILL be there at the end. Atlanta has flaws too and will fade away. We'll come back. I guarantee it.

To joews below: Happ threw 3 scoreless innings today and his prior start he was hitting 92-95 on the gun and came on strong the last 2 innings. This according to amaro jr. on7/16 and that their "absolutely looking at him as a starter not a reliever. He has 22 k's in 22.1 IP and with the developments today i'd imagine they'll be getting him up their soon.

Too bad you have to count on other teams fading or failing in order for you to get back into the race. If you look at it, while the Philliesplayed some good baseball over the previous three seasons, they were helped immensley by the failures of other teams. I hate to say it but it looks like there is no magic left for this season. I do not want to be negative but this team has had nearly 2/3 of a season to show something and they really haven't done anything to warrant holding out hope for a turnaround.

At least Ruben was smart enough to lock Baez up for 2011. I mean, with the intense market for him last offseason with all the lucrative offers he was receiving and with his recent track record of success, anything less than a two year deal would have been foolish.

@leaal02...it isn't just the epic Lee fiasco, which isn't only about the loss of Lee, but getting nothing in return. There is the Ibanez signing and long term contract...the Blanton contract...the signing of Baez while letting Park go...the Castro contract (small loss, but a loss nonetheless when we had Cairo, a superior player)...the letting go of Myers who is way better than Blanton...other than trading for Lee in the first place, Ruben has stuck up the joint. I am not hating...it's a tough biz, and the rewards are great when you succeed and the blame is there when you don't. But Rube has given it his best shot and come up short...

Before the injuries and offensive funk the Phillies were comfortably in first place, performing in a manner that was expected and typical. No one can plan for the number of injuries they had. The funk was totally unexpected and uncharacteristic. It is tough to blame RAJ for what has happened, since he had this team positioned to be competing for a return to post season play. The early success bears this out.

Buyers Or Sellers, That's What Any Club Must Decide Before The Trading Deadline .... Most Clubs Make Up Their Minds In July ... Obviously The Phillies Didn't Wait For July And Made Up Their Minds After The World Series ... Sellers ... Nobody Ever Mentions The Reactions That Must Have Been From The Phillie Players When Their Ace Was Traded For "Rebuilding The Farm"... That's The Kind Of Trade You Make When Your 20 Games Out And No Where To Go ... Way To Instill Confidence And Show Your Team You Got Their Backs As They Go For a 3rd Series Apperance ... Any Other Team I'd Say Has Quit On The Season, But I Know It's Not True. ... ...

amaro needs a new radar gun if he says Happ was throwing that hard..im going to stop harping on Cliff Lee because this team wouldnt be winning even with him, so maybe Amaro had a crystal ball which told him this season would be a disaster.. i will admit, listening to that arrogant tone in Amaro's voice has always vexed me- he acts as if he was the reason they won it all in 08 when he was just the assistant GM.. anyway, rube, dont make a deal just to seem like you are trying to win this year...make deals with only 2011 in mind..

So we keep Blanton over Lee because no one will pay the money that the Phils are paying Blanton. So Lee has to go, we have too much pitching, not enough money, but now we pay Lee-type money for an above average pitcher that another team wants to unload. Guess I'm not smart enough to be a GM.
