Amaro hints trade possible by weekend

Righthander Kyle Kendrick was optioned to Triple A Lehigh Valley today by the Phillies and righthander Andrew Carpenter was recalled from the Iron Pigs, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.
Amaro said that Carpenter is heading for the bullpen and hinted that a trade for a pitcher is possible before Saturday when Kendrick was next scheduled to start.
“In the short term this makes us better because we have an extra pitcher in the bullpen," Amaro said. "And that’s what Carpenter’s here to do. We will fill Kendrick’s spot in the rotation, whether it’s from within or outside the organization, we haven’t decided yet.
“Happ is a possibility. He’s somebody we could consider and we have some other balls in the air.”
That was followed by this exchange:
Question: It sounds like you’re close to doing something.
Amaro: “I think we know exactly what we’re going to do. I just choose not to tell you.”
Question: So you think a trade is close?
“I think we have an idea what we want to do.”
Kendrick, 25, was 5-4 with a 4.82 earned run average in 20 games (18 starts) this season. Kendrick allowed seven earned runs in five innings in the Phillies' 8-4 loss at St. Louis on Monday night.
Carpenter, 25, was 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 18 starts for Lehigh Valley. In the major leagues, he has a 9.45 ERA in one start for Phillies. This is the second recall of the season for Carpenter who was also recalled on April 3. He did not appear in any games before being optioned back to Lehigh Valley on April 8.
@Zorro - you think Worley is ready to pitch now from AA? That's what they did with Kendrick a few years ago and he turned into a mess. And 7-6 is an irrelevant stat, especially for a minor leaguer. His ERA is 3.41 and his WHIP is 1.27. Good, not great, and better than watching KK implode in half his starts. B in DC
Bye-Bye KK... I was hoping you could pull through and make yourself a big-league guy.... Now you will probably wallow in the minors unless you are traded... Good Luck... M60tanker
Has anyone noticed Rollins, Victorino and Dobbs as well as Ibanez can't hit anymore? Utley was NOT playing at all well before he got hurt AND Baez sucks. Try to fix all of that in 2 weeks---NO WAY. DONDEN31

leeal02, And bech who? There's no way we can get a stud corner OF bat while paying another OF huge money to sit the bench. That's why everyone's making a big deal about Lee. If you can't improve the offense, then the only way to get better is to improve the pitching. What they need to do is bring up Brown, for one. Seriously, if you're going to bench Ibanez like they did the other day, wouldn't you do it for Brown instead of Ben Francisco?! He needs to be up here. And everyone knows they need another starter, esp. since KK got sent down and if the Happ rumor is correct and he hasn't hit 90 yet, we're screwed. I love Carpenter for the Phillies...in the bullpen. I don't see him as a starter at all. I also heard they're looking at John Buck at catcher from Toronto, which makes sense. I like Chooch as much as the next guy, but if you can move him for a better hitter (and a guy who doc is still comfortable with), you have to do it, especially if the price is right. CJ84
they could have had brett myers this year. but amaro didn't think he was needed. houston signed him for 1yr at $3million. he's 7-6 w/ a 3.35ERA. amaro is such a genius. chadp1234- B in DC. I don't know if he is ready or would be. I guess we won't know now. Carpenter had his chance last year (and ERA over 9), although it was in limited action. I guess, because he was with the team at the beginning of the year, the Phillies didn't have to burn another option on him and didn't want to start the clock on Worley, either... BTW, the billionaire cigar guy doesn’t give a sh*t about the Phillies. If he ever did the team would have been his by now. EL Zorro
- @Joe WS, Amaro said just a few days ago that Happ was steady between 92 and 95 MPH. It's not his velocity, it's his command right now. cg
cg- you believe what amaro says??? They showed the highlights and said Happ's velocity was not great. Happ never hit 93-95mph all of last year. He is not a fastball pitcher. Happ won't come up for another 3-4 weeks if he keeps up giving up tons of runs. He'll get surgery at the end of the year. Joe WS
Happ may be ready in another week. He just needs work. Carpenter and KK may be the same guy. Because I have never seen them together, that may be the case. mick314
@leeal02, Good post!! You are absolutely right, run production and injuries have been the biggest problem. We would be in no better position with Lee, so get over it people. To you people talking about Happ, the velocity isn't the problem. In his last two starts he has hit 92-95 on the radar gun, but his control has been atrocious! Be informed before posting nonsense! 2-3 games better? ha! i doubt it. 1) phils would have given him more runs in NL East then Seattle. 2)No DH 3)improved chemistry after more wins. I would bet that if phils had Lee, the phils would be tied, at worst, with Atlanta going into the second half. then if the phils got healthy in the second half, we'd be right back in the hunt for red october. g$ is an idiot
We all want to see Happ back with the Phillies. If he was right, they would have called him up today. Can you say "Tommy John" surgery. My gut feeling tells me he's going to need it, and the sooner the better so we can get him back sometime next year. flyerrichs
I'm tired of hearing about Cliff Lee. He's gone and never coming back. It was a bad move made for the wrong reasons. Please let it go. ccourtney2000
Leeal02, I sure hope we don't miss the playoffs by 2-3 games. I find it funny that having Lee as #2 and Hamels as #3 starters translates to only 2-3 games. The Cliff Lee trade is a disaster, a complete and utter disaster. Amaro is getting far to much of a pass. Why did it have to be done when it was done and for that disgrace of a package Mottz
