Righthander Kyle Kendrick was optioned to Triple A Lehigh Valley today by the Phillies and righthander Andrew Carpenter was recalled from the Iron Pigs, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

Amaro said that Carpenter is heading for the bullpen and hinted that a trade for a pitcher is possible before Saturday when Kendrick was next scheduled to start.

“In the short term this makes us better because we have an extra pitcher in the bullpen," Amaro said. "And that’s what Carpenter’s here to do. We will fill Kendrick’s spot in the rotation, whether it’s from within or outside the organization, we haven’t decided yet.

“Happ is a possibility. He’s somebody we could consider and we have some other balls in the air.”

That was followed by this exchange:

Question: It sounds like you’re close to doing something.

Amaro: “I think we know exactly what we’re going to do. I just choose not to tell you.”

Question: So you think a trade is close?

“I think we have an idea what we want to do.”

Kendrick, 25, was 5-4 with a 4.82 earned run average in 20 games (18 starts) this season. Kendrick allowed seven earned runs in five innings in the Phillies' 8-4 loss at St. Louis on Monday night.

Carpenter, 25, was 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 18 starts for Lehigh Valley. In the major leagues, he has a 9.45 ERA in one start for Phillies. This is the second recall of the season for Carpenter who was also recalled on April 3. He did not appear in any games before being optioned back to Lehigh Valley on April 8.

I wouldn't expect to see Happ at all this season. Guys velocity is way down and he is getting slapped around. He's been pitching for quite a while now since his return, and no progress at all. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he got shut down for the season and needed surgery.

Can't we bring Figgy back off waivers? He deserves it.

kendrick is gone and will never return to the Bigs. Carpenter is no better, however, and Happ looks like a Tommy John surgery away from returning. No need to mention which Phillies official helped to put us in this mess by choosing Halladay over Lee because of money to be paid down the road. Fortunately, Hamels is returning to form, but the minor league system has little pitching help above single A.

A 7-6 record (Carpenter) against AAA players, many ML rejects or career minor leaguers, is not a good season. How about Vance Worley, who has pitched 17 consecutive shutout innings sandwiched between a scoreless inning in the AA AS Game. Nonetheless, I think they should have given Kendrick another chance. Why? Since April, he had a 5-2 with a 3.64 ERA in 12 starts before last night game. The Phillies were 8-4 in those 12 starts. He threw a complete game against Pittsburgh in his penultimate outing before the break, then allowed just one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings against the 1st place Cincinnati team in his final start of the 1st half. But guess what, the first game coming out of the break was given to Moyer. Charlie and Dubee seem to like playing games with young pitchers while keeping a senior citizen in the rotation. Go figure.

Now if you bench Ibanez and/or Werth, you may start waking the team up and they may realize it's not 2008 or 2009 anymore.

Thank God KK is gone. Even when he pitches well I don't feel comfortable watching him. On a side note, Ibanez has 6 hits in his last 13 ABs and a SB. He is now batting a whopping .252. Hopefully this is the start of something.

I enjoyed watching Kendrick getting shelled. It always made for a fun evening knowing he couldn't possibly win. Let's hope they don't send down all the rest of those bums.

This was long overdue. I was expecting Happ to come back up in his place though (and yes I'm aware of the struggles he's been having). Low velocity or not, he's gotta be better than Carpenter. Maybe the rest of you are right though, and this is just a stop-gap until a trade is made.

Happ's velocity was steady between 92-95 from what Amaro said 3 days ago.

Phillipe Aumont is 21 years old. He was a 1st round pick a few years ago. He was a starter for 2 years in the minors, then a reliver for one, then back to starter this year before the Phils admitted they should not have started him in AA, where he'd never logged starters' innings. Anyone who thinks he has no shot at ever playing in the bigs should take a look at the careers of a couple guys named Halladay and Lee. They didn't get it right away either. Not saying he'll actually be as good as either of them, or actually turn out to be good at all, but to write him off this far into his minor league career is absurd.

Thanks whatsthe411, I was starting to think I'd go 10 minutes before someone whined about Cliff Lee. And please, if you want to whine about the team at least spell the player's names correctly. It adds a bit of credibility to what you say. Please understand this: Lee would not change this team from where they are in the standings. Moyer was slated to be in the bullpen when Happ went down, and he has 9 wins. How many more would Lee have if he were in the rotation instead? GET OVER IT ALREADY. I said it before and I'll continue to say it...if Lee were here all of the bashers would be saying how much he sucks. Some people are only happy when they're unhappy.
