Kendrick: I'll be back

POSTED: Monday, March 23, 2009, 2:35 PM

A resolute Kyle Kendrick vowed this afternoon that he would be back in the big leagues sooner rather than later. Three times in the first minute of his conversation with reporters in the Phillies clubhouse he said the words, "I'll be back." Though Kendrick admitted he was upset when first informed that he had been optioned to the minors, he later realized the move was for the better.

Kendrick was running a distant third in the competiton for the fifth starter's spot as J.A. Happ and Chan Ho Park put together impressive springs.

"At first, I'm not going to lie, it was surprising," he said. "But at the same time, those guys have been pitching good and they had to make a move, so like I said, I'm going to go work on what I ened to work on, get better and I'll be back.

"I didn't show my offspeed stuff early enough and it was a little erratic at times. It just needs to get better and I know I need to get better.. .I'm going to go down there with a clear mind and get better, and I'll be back."

He works hard and wants to be a good pitcher for this team but unfortunately I don't think he has the talent to be a consistent starter in the majors

Get older, work harder, and develop some out pitches, and the experience this kid has already gotten under his belt will make him a nice mid-tier starter, even if it's not for the Phils.

He's very young so its not the end of the world. He will love Allentown. Its Toledo without the glitter.

lets see if the Brett Myers pitching adjustment can work for Kendrick. I hope so. It is always better to have more bullets.

Larry Bowa never cared for Kendrick - said he was a crybaby. Upon that analysis, I say "good riddance" Kendrick.

Wow...kind of amazing we have more than our share of quality starters that a guy with his big league record gets sent down! It was obvious he was the odd man out but let's hope he rebounds as he came through for us when we needed him last two years.

He got his ring. It's all downhill from here. He is a career journeyman righthanded pitcher. He is a AAA caliber pitcher.

Too bad that trade to the Japanese Baseball League 2 years ago was only a goof...maybe he would do better over there!

"Three times in the first minute of his conversation with reporters in the Phillies clubhouse he said the words, 'I'll be back.'" ... Good Lord, I sure hope not. One-pitch pitchers don't even work in a ML bullpen, much less a starting rotation.

He can't get lefties out and that was his demise.

He should have been in Allentown all last season. He might be ready now.

I hope we don't see him again, mainly because that means we are having serious problems with our pitching staff if we have to dip into the minors. I also don't think he'll ever be anything more than he is right now.

He's a "Bull Durham" character type of player...a journeyman at best. Sadly, I don't think he believes enough in himself to produce consistently at the major league level. Better to see him in the minors right now, rather than have him blowing games early in the season, before eventually being sent down anyway.

What made Kendrick effective was his fearlessness. He's lost that and until he regains that he doesn't have a shot because his stuff is mediocre at best.

To the guy who said Larry Bowa never cared for Kendricks and that Kendricks was a crybaby in Bowa's eyes ...Well, Larry Bowa is a bad manager, gets on people's nerves and should grow up. Kendricks said the right things and I hope he feels it inside and will work his way back to the big leagues. That said I am not sure if he has the talent but then Larry Bowa didn't have the talent and his career worked out well... though agina, as if any cares, Larry Bowa gives me the creeps. Some people fight to make the big club and that served Larry well but it also made him an obnoxious guy in the clubhouse as a manager and probably as a player too.

It was surprising? I think Kendrick must have been the only person on the planet who follows the Phillies that was surprised by this move? Kendrick's development got screwed over when the Phils had to rush him to the majors out of desperation from AA where he wasn't exactly dominating. Some time at AAA will do Kendrick good. If he can work on and develop his change-up into a quality pitch so he can get lefties out, he may be a decent 4th or 5th major league starter at one point.

Great attitude and great work ethic. He'll be a contributor just like he was before but perhaps in a bigger way.

give the guy a break....I mean, it was obvious he was the odd man out this year, and time strarting every 5th day in AAA will do the man good, but we dont win it all last year without some contribution from him last year, no matter how bad he was at end of year....hes still young and can develop into servicable ML pitcher....it helped when he came up he was unknown and almost no one had seen him....now teams have "the book" on him...he has to adjust and hopefully will....lets not judge how his career is going to be too quickly...I would rather see him called up if somebody gets hurt then some of the scrubs Phils have trotted out in past years....give the man a little respect...I believe he has 30 or so ML wins and above .500 record...I believe that earns him a little bit of the benefit of the doubt....

The more opponents have seen him, the more they hit him. The division opponents crush him. He's just not that good.

The guy is a first class weirdo. As far as being surprised by the move, I also heard that Matt LeBlanc was surprised when Joey was cancelled.

kk continually received run support each game he pitched in. if he got the run support cole hamels got last year, he would have been out with eaton.

His first year was kind of an illusion if you think about. Pitchers who average 6+ runs per game in terms of offensive support can afford to give up 4-5 runs agame, like Kendrick does. I think more than anything else, he needs to work on his attitude and mature more as a potential big league pitcher. You can't show such negative emotion on the mound when things don't go your way. I think he a future but will likely become part of a trade package along the lines of Gavin Floyd, et al.
