Juan Pierre makes sense for Phillies
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
UPDATED (11:55 a.m.): The Phillies have agreed to a minor league deal with Juan Pierre with an invitation to spring training.
EARLIER: According to Comcast Sports Net, the Phillies have had "serious" discussions with Juan Pierre about bringing the speedy 34-year-old left fielder to Philadelphia.
The move would make sense because the Phillies do not currently have an experienced fall-back plan in case the combination of Laynce Nix and John Mayberry Jr. does not work out. Pierre has logged at least 400 plate appearances in each of his 11 full seasons as a major leaguer. The two current candidates to start the season at left field -- Laynce Nix and John Mayberry Jr. -- have reached 400 plate appearances once between them (and that was back in 2004, when Nix was a 23-year-old for the Texas Rangers).
But it would be hard to get too excited about such a move.
Pierre won't give you anything in the way of power, and he doesn't leg out nearly as many doubles and triples as he did during his prime with the Rockies and Marlins. Last season, he recorded a career-low 27 stolen bases and was caught a league-leading 17 times. You don't have to do the math to know that ain't a good rate. He'll be 34 years old, and his .277 batting average and .335 on base percentage over the last two seasons are both below his career averages.
Additionally, it would leave Charlie Manuel attempting to cobble together two everyday players with a variety of detached body parts. It would give him two left-handed hitters (Nix and Pierre) along with two right-handed hitters (John Mayberry and Ty Wigginton) for left field, and two left-handed hitters (Nix and Jim Thome) and two right-handed hitters (Mayberry and Wigginton) for first base (until Ryan Howard returns), with Nix having played sparingly at the position and Thome having not played there at all in five years.
Frankly, if it gets to the point where Juan Pierre is your best veteran option as an everyday left fielder, then you probably don't have much to lose by bringing Domonic Brown up and letting him play on a regular basis.
That said, if Pierre is willing to sign for minimal dollars to reunite with former Marlins teammate Dontrelle Willis as a speed/base-reaching threat off the bench (he has excellent career numbers against lefties), the Phillies wouldn't be any worse for the wear.
^
One other note -- ESPN is reporting that the Yankees and Raul Ibanez have some mutual interest in a deal.
Now we are looking into possibilities that only Howie Roseman would consider? jimmymack- The Tonner's pretty sure not even "Mailroom" Howie would have done this signing. Sure the Phils go him on the cheap but is Pierre coming of an ACL injury the Tonner doesn't know about?
You state that he can't leg out doubles or triples like he use to and he was caught stealing a league high 17 times last year. So why do you end the article labeling him as a speed/base-reaching threat? The dude is 34 and his career numbers are drastically declining. NO THANKS! Give me Dom. BleedPhilly
Comment removed.- Actually, I guess you are another of these people who really doesn't bother looking at the numbers! Off, but a little. Juan Pierre never had much power, but he does get on base at a higher clip than many of the other players on this team, and he DOESN'T STRIKE OUT A LOT! (He strikes out about once every 20 or so PA's, as opposed to a clown like Laynce Nix who strikes out once ever four PA's, and he doesn't have much power doesn't get on base! JP was successful on about 62% of his steal attempts last year, which really isn't so bad when you consider the MLB average is only about 75%.)
Just where were all you whiners when they made the mistake of giving a real contract to Laynce Nix?
Laynce Nix? Good grief! BEMiller
Actually, I would be excited about this. Obvious outfield upgrade over Mike Mart and Exxon Valdez (Wigginton will take Exxon's infield spots). Makes contact, plays defense. Exactly want you want from a 4th outfielder, bench player. SilliBilli- Um, wiggington cant play short and Valdez had to play there a lot last couple of years so not sure what you're talking about.
If they're considering Pierre, I'd like to see what Podsednick can do. I don't see much value in either, but I think that Pods might offer at least some gap power. willthethrill11- You will, they are the two frontrunners for the 5th outfield position...Speed is a true missing ingredient from this Phillies team, and although Pierre is not the player he used to be, he still can take an extra base late in a game as a pinchrunner...and probably could teach the entire squad how to bunt. Murph put alot of words into this acquisition, which is really a spring training tryout...Just like the fans, he must be bored out of his mind.
bearsfriend
I'll pass on Pierre. That said, maybe I could pass him if he's lost a step or three (not two). walt1
Pierre is no upgrade over Podsednick. Might as well take someone at the veteran minimum. While we are looking at players I saw one of our former prospects Adrian Cardensas was designated for assignment. Only 24 and hit over .300 in AAA, why not add him to our roster. Only 38 guys on the 40 man roster right now so there is room. Blue and White- Actually, if you paid attention, you'd know Juan Pierre is a great upgrade over Scott Podsednick, or should I say, the MUCH INJURED Scott Podsednick, who seems to have never been able to play an entire season during is career.
Insofar as AC, he couldn't be a bad replacement for MM. BEMiller
Also, Phils need a guy who can lay down a bunt when called upon. SilliBilli- The only bunt Charlie knows about is "bunt" cake.

Saying goodbye to Wilson Valdez was a puzzler ... money aside. Indicating that Martinez is a suitable infield b/u which he most assuredly is not ... at least judging from last year's efforts.
Why are the Phils phocusing on retread OF's when they have Brown and possibly Podsednick already in the system (to go with the other retreads)???
The team needs IF depth. Period!
FishFryFrank- Unless Dom goes buck wild in Spring Training, the plan for him is to give him max time putting up serious numbers in AAA and giving him more time in leftfield, especially if he's working on a new stance he's experimenting on now in the Winter.

Is there a mandate from ownership that all players must be 34 and older? scootch- I guess you meant that everyone is 34 or older except for: Howard, Utley, Rollins, Lee, Pence, Hamels, Victorino, Papelbon, Mayberry, Chooch, Bastardo, Stutes, etc.? However, I guess since we have two key players over the age of 34 (Halladay & Polanco), that somehow proves your "point". I love how the clueless are always the most vocal.
The Pack Leader - The guy was just being facetious. Although most are not over 34 – the point being made was that the team is old and getting older by the signing…
Bobphxville - Here we go again: Hamels, Pence, Mayberry, Brown, Bastardo, Stutes, Worley all under 30. So, how exactly is the TEAM old? Thome and Contreras are old, Halladay & Polanco are getting old, but the rest of the team is there early thirties or younger. Again...a baseless argument that the clueless keep perpetuating.
The Pack Leader - According to the ESPN Baseball Roster Analysis site, the Phillies have the oldest roster in the majors. So Pack Leader, why don't you apologize to everyone you insulted, and then be quiet for a while (lest you continue to prove your point that the clueless are the most vocal).
nydb - There are no facetious boo boo birdies. Facetiousness requires a level of subtlety they are incapable of obtaining!
BEMiller
Unless it's a non-guaranteed deal, I agree...why not try Dom and then make a trade deadline move if necessary. Or let's just trust RAJ that he's still got a move or three to make yet. PhillySubsMac- They'd prefer to have Dom regain his swagger and put up big numbers in AAA,thus building value. The "down the line deal" may invole Dom,but not with his present standing.
bearsfriend
He's 34 going on 60. Doesn't matter if he didn't cost much, but he is not good anymore. kozykoz26- Sound's as if you're not very bright going on dead stupid.
The man hit .280 last year, and played 158 games with 700 PA's.
And, he's on a minor league deal to make the team or not.
If he can't do anything, he goes his merry way.
Where were you whiners when they signed Laynce Nix? BEMiller - An empty .280 with a number of infield hits with absolutely no power and a below- average outfielder.
mwcnabb
He's been invited to spring training to make the team. Why is that a bad thing? beegal99
This comment has been deleted. d1955h- Yep, retreads like Cody Ross, Pat Burrel and Aaron Rowand for the Giants in 2009. How'd that end up again???
- Actually, Aaron Rowand didn't do much for that team.
If you'd paid attention a few years ago, I didn't want the Phillies to let Pat Burrell go.
The joker in the deck was Cody Ross, who never did anything before nor has he done anything since that stretch run in 2009. BEMiller
HELLO ITS NOT 2003 ITS 2012, WTF????? VANIMALS SWEATY GOGGLES
Shudder to think of Raul as a Yankee....sad development. Ed3
Lived in Ft Lauderdale while Jaun was there, what a pain in the arse the guy is for opposing pitchers while he's on base. Hopefully he's got something left in the tank.
phillyboobird- Good grief!
Have you been cheating. You're not supposed to pay attention to what actually happens, don't you know?
He doesn't strike out a lot and gets on base about 35% of the time. That amounts to a pitcher's pain! BEMiller
Let's see what he brings to camp before everyone kills him.....this guy used to kill us when he was with the Marlins. Good defense and good speed, so let's just see what happens.....
While keeping this window of opportunity open, it's also imperative RAJ get back to stocking this farm system with high quality players. Not sure what role Pat Gillick has in that aspect these days, I know his first love was the minors and scouting......I sure hope he is still doing that for us......along with Joe Jordan, whom I hope is up to the task in filling Chuck LaMars's shoes. DelawareRiverRat
@beegal99
I agree with you, the idea of signing him to a springing training type contract is not a major cap attack or anything, and maybe he can have a revival like Ibanez and Werth. When the Phillies signed both of those guys, it was during their down years and look what they did in pinstripes (Even if Ibanez slumped in his later down the line)?
Give him a shot at least before you call for blood. Hell, wearing red could be good for him. And, it will not be a big impact financially.
theAngelsofBlood
He is a guy who can lay down a bunt. We had almost nobody who can. So what he doesn't hit HRs. Nobody else does either. 4thand10
Remember Luis Castillo from last year? Same likelihood of Pierre making the team. LennyFromPhilly- One big difference. When the brought Castillo in (and I agree that was a waste of time), it was to see if he could be a fulltime starter at second while Chase was on the mend with no true timetable of return...If Pierre makes the club, it'll be as a 5th outfielder,25th man on the roster...He's been around, still has specific talents that could help a team, especially one with such little speed off the bench...It's all on him if he's able to officially transition into being an effective role player....think of a 1-1 game with two out in the bottom of the eigth..and a Brian Schneider is on first...or second...Pierre would be a pleasant sight.

The Phillies have no O.B.S. at all or a cather to through the guy out at cather either wes
The Phillies have no O.B.S. at all or a cather to through the guy out at cather either wes- The Tonner read this all three times you posted it and it still doesn't make sense. Time to start slugging Genny Cream Ale and then the Tonner will try to read it again and see if it makes sense.
The Phillies have no O.B.S. at all or a cather to through the guy out at cather either wes
People are making this out to be a guaranteed contract worth 8 million. NO risk, high reward type deal here, much like D-Willis (non guaranteed contract). If he is good enough to make the team, then hey, he might have something left in the tank which will benefit the team. Now lets go after Luis Castillo! ESFjellin- You guys pining for Dom Brown are a riot. Yeah, why wouldn't you want to put a developing player who's growth has noticeably been hampered because of significant lack of ABs the last two years right back into that same platoon situation while giving him another year of service time. Nice armchair-GM'ing, dolts.
- Best use for Brown: Keep him in AAA, hope he hits well and regains trade value. Send his .200 MLB hitting and kangaroo-with-boxing-gloves fielding elsewhere.
Tom Livingston
Wow, all of these comments are ridiculous. Please... you clamor for more depth, Rube goes out and adds Thome, Nix, Wiggington, Pierre, Scotty Pods and people freak out.
In my last 25 years on this earth, I've been living and dying with the Phils since I was 5 - prior to 2007 they were in the playoffs ONCE - in the past 5 years we're coming off 5 straight NL East Championships (with 2 NL Pennants and WS Ring to boot) and the best record in baseball. You'd think the sky was falling around here - do you people honestly want a WS championship every freaking year? Give me a Division title 3/5 years, the playoffs 4/5 years, and a WS trip 1/5 years and I'm beaming. PhillyIllini- Do you always spaz out on the fans?...This acquisition is simply added competition for the 5th outfield spot...Many posts have said that....Many fans HERE in Phialdelphia and the Delaware Valley are in love with the Phillies(and have been, just like you). So, take your meds and enjoy the ride...or reread the posts.

It's a minor league deal. Cool your jets, people. You don't expect to put guys like that on the major league roster. If he tears it up in Spring Training, then he might take a 5th outfield spot, but that's it. If he's willing to go to AAA, he becomes a guy to stash in the minors and bring up if an OF needs to go on the 15 day deal. Teams offer these sorts of Spring Training tryout deals all the time, this is nothing new. No team is going to have 40 Hall-of-Famers showing up for Spring Training. JimG
I concur @PhillyIllini, whiners all. They lose nothing by signing this guy to a minor league deal. This guy is a fantastic pinch run/bunt threat off the bench and mashes left handers. TexasYankee
Now I am convinced there is another shoe waiting to drop. In effect, the Phillies cleared out 2 million in salary, by trading Valdez, and not tendering an offer to Lidge for a paltry 1 million, when he would have made a more serviceable set up guy than the physically questionable Contreras. (Obviously the Phillies also think Podsednik's foot problems will rule him out as an OF option. There is something else in the hopper. I'm going out on a limb to say that another deal is in the works, and it involves Victorino, which is why they might need more OF depth, especially at CF. Victorino and a package of young guys, Worley, Colvin?) for a mystery player. Vic is not likely to be resigned nest year as a FA, so maybe Rube has been dangling him. Maybe, maybe.... laser5
i like the move. He is a veteran that is trying to make a name for himself and he still has it in him. bbewsirhc
Dontrelle Willis is a better hitter Pierre. KINGOFZED
Geez, this is only a minor league deal. Why, all the negative comments? You need players on the minor league roster to play games. This might allow a move for a better player to make the major league team and make sure Sandberg has enough players on his roster. sonnybuoy01
Give Luis Castillo a ring. I heard he's available for the right price, too. Sam Crow
I mean the guy swiped 60 bags in 2010 and is a career .296 hitter, why all the fuss about those stats relating to your potential 4th outfielder? wlightning02
Too funny....players too old, players too young....play the veterans, play the rooiies....trade for guys, bring guys up.....the hallmark of a well run organization and a Gillick run team is to throw 50 people up against the wall competing for 25 jobs and see which ones stick! That's far and away the best approach. Rube and probably Gillick have done that this winter with the pitching, the bench, and the non-roster guys they've signed. I don't know about you but everytime Pierre came up ina crucial situation where we needed to get him out, he'd get a hit or a walk. He's pesky! How many Phillie hitters can you say that about. Perhaps we should wait and see who sticks... Mark1npt- Yes Mark, plaster on the wall for the last few spots on a team is always the best route (over guaranteed deals and zero competition)...And I agree Pierre was always "Reyeslike" in his ability to get on base and always seem to score...6 years ago...It's always to kick tires to see if there's anything left...But it has gotta suck to be a Rich Thompson...On another note, this has generated alot more interest than Francisco Elson, right?

RAJ has already said that he prefers to keep Dom at AAA this season to better learn LF. Now if Dom does make the cut, Ryno will need someone for Allentown. If JP does wind up at Allentown, maybe he can show the Next Generation how to bunt. Apparently we don't have anyone who can. If Whitey was still around..... andivalspoppop
Hahaha, some of these responses are comical....@Seesaw, man up??? really? this your idea of manning up to soemthing, a sports article? ooookaaayyy.
Really, Juan signed a minor league contract with a promise for a tryout (see Luis Castillo). I am not sure he is even expected to make the team. no need to get all huffy about it.
-not bob levy remyy
Another option. Keep'em coming... Grazman
To all those barking about it only being a minor league deal: The problem with this signing is that he *might* actually make the roster. And then he's just taking up a spot that could be filled by something they need... like someone who can play the infield with pop, especially at 3B. Sam Crow
Have Pierre leadoff. Bat Rollins ninth. Tell Rollins that he's batting right before the leadoff hitter! pedge
The Iron Pigs are going to be tough!! FetchDixon

Don't think they have any plans for Pierre to play in the field. His role will be to pinch run for big Jim Thome if he is able to get on base pinch hitting or lay down sac. bunts in close and late games. But the problem is as it is with most of this team Pierre is past his prime and has lost a step or two. Last year he was thrown out trying to steal almost 40% of the time but he did lay down 19 sac. bunts. Dull
yes, just a camp invite so no reason to overreact..i didnt realize he ozzie was still sticking him out there everyday..over 700 plate appearances the last 2 years with just about 40 walks, so he fits the phils m.o.
im ok with the idea of having multiple options while charlie tries to scrape together a lineup/roster with Howard out.
you do wonder what the Phils plans are for Victorino after this season..if he's looking for a jump in salary hard to see the phils being willing and able to give it to him. jim715
Mark1npt - what say ye? dwp66
Stop the panic. Do you all not read the entire article? It is a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL. Not even on the 40 man roster. Nothing to loose by keeping a veteran player at AAA. What if something happens to Victorino? At least Pierre has CF experience and has some speed. Podsednick will probably have the inside track for the last outfielder's spot. Minor league deals with invites to Spring training are a win win for everyone. Brown should remain at AAA to learn defense and how to hit the breaking pitch (we already have on lefty who can't stop his swing on outside breaking balls). Remember, there are only 38 guys on the 40 man active roster. RAJ may have one more rabbit to pull out of his hat via trade. drhoffman
If he is indeed called up due to anything other than an injury situation - the season is shot. Northcountry

Why does it seem like the Phillies just don't want to give Mayberry a legit chance to play everyday? Look at his numbers - he had more HR and RBI than Chase in less games played! If his numbers played out for a full season (a big assumption I know) he would have hit 30 HR and 100 RBI. I get it he's 28 and just had his first real MLB season but I think he earned a chance to play everyday. I don't get why the phils want to bring in these washed up has beens to compete. This is a good move if they get him CHEAP and leave him on the bench to pinch hit/pinch run and maybe play a little D johnny6- Interesting you picked that up...That comes more from the writer than it does from the club... (Both beat writers were totally in the DB camp, and Mayberry Jr. was NEVER more than a 5th outfielder to them coming into last spring)...Rest assure, Mayberry Jr. will be on the field way more than he was...even in the last third of 2011..But he will not play that many righthanders, especially the ones with sharp breaking balls...He's my favorite, but he's still pull happy...Pierre is in no way a threat to Jr. in leftfield...He will do some damage now that he gets the chance.

You guys are selfish. This team is great.Following the phils since the 40's it was exciting to get out of the cellar.Fifth place was a real accomplishment.Enjoy these times-they really don't come often. philsfansince1946

PhillyIllini and TexasYankee: If your login names are indicative, it looks like you guys have been away from Philly for a long enough period of time that you have lost the moronic need to constantly Bit*h and Moan about EVERYTHING that the Phillies, their management, their ball girls, and hot dog and beer vendors do!!!
If ever there was a major league team whose "fans: do not deserve to have a really superior team represent their city, it just HAS to be
the Phillies! Guys complaining that they are "tired of losing." What a laugh!! How many Division Championships do these guys need in a row before they satisfy the unwashed? Best record in baseball over the past 5 years and they still complain. Juan Pierre makes sense for the Phillies? Juan Pierre would make sense--especially on a minor league and invite deal--for ANYONE.
It's Laynce Nix who makes absolutely NO SENSE AT ALL!
He may have gotten caught stealing too much last year, but he also DID STEAL 27 bases. Laynce Nix hasn't gotten ten steals in his whole horrid career! BEMiller- Again, you trashing Laynce Nix (?) in a post...Do you miss Raul that much, or did Nix steal your woman?...Horrid career?...The Phillies picked him up as 200AB piece who can hit righthanded pitching (16 homers in 2012,all against lefties)...He's a tough guy (West Texas HS QB at Midland), a good athlete (can play all 3 OF positions), and he's embracing signing with a great team...For you to continuously trash him before he's even put on the uniform is beyond reproach. Grow up.

Excuse me for the typo, Layne Nix hit all 16 of his homers against righthanders. bearsfriend
@bearsfriend - If you don't like my optimism, then don't single me out repeatedly and comment on it. But by all means, please continue to sound like one of the resident idiots that gives Philadelphia a bad name. PhillyIllini
@bearsfriend - Also, I have multiple other posters agreeing with my sentiments in this thread, once again proving that I'm not off base with asking why people are getting so upset this offseason. I'm excited for 2012 and proud to be a Phillies fan these past 5-6 years. PhillyIllini
Amaro is recognizing that we don't have Major League ready position players at the AAA level, with the possible exception of Brown. So we sign guys like Orr, Posednik and Pierre for the time being. Makes sense, actually. eman

He can teach Howard how to strike out with dignity eaglessuck@life
He still stole a career high 68 bases in 2010 Bleezie30
I like this move, because Pierre might have something left. He's a guy who actually wants to steal bases, and can add to the overall aggressiveness of this team. I'm still unsure why the Phils let Davey Lopes walk last year, but if Pierre or Podsednik can make the team, it can only help. 76erfn
I like him if he can and if the team is willing to steal bases. Otherwise it's just another warm body to throw into the LF mix. AvoidSundanceVacations
Geez, it's a minor-league deal. Pierre may not even be on the team come April. mike l
Like other minor league deals, this one gives the Phils a low-risk chance to see whether Pierre can still add anything to the mix, like bat control and some vestigial speed. Give him a try, say I. Can't hurt. Dave Clemens
As usual with the negative talk on these threads... guessing this isn't the place for the real Phillies fans. Just the negadelphians so peace out! Phillydave
Hungry players make for a hungry team....I love this bench potential, love the versatility......whoever sticks on the 25 man roster will have a role, talent and a drive to win. You don't need a bunch of Lou Gehrigs on the bench. Guys with skills and drive, guys who want that ring can trump a lackadaiscal talent every time. The brass is great at evaluating talent, and quality human beings. We should be very proud of this franchise and the players the brass sign to wear our pinstripes. I'm sure Pierre has some talents to bring to the table. Is he a 68 SB threat anymore? No. But he isn't signed for that reason either. I'd take his talents anyday, versus a Victorino who can't/won't bunt, who doesn't run when the other team is giving him 2nd and who doesn't use his speed to disrupt any pitcher or catcher. If he does nothing more than fill in for an injured player or bunt a few guys over this year, I'll be happy. It also looks as though the brass may not be convinced that Podsednik has conquered his foot problems. For a player like Pods he has to have his legs, much like Rollins, if he doesn't he's really not of any use anymore. Mark1npt
No, No, No! mutleyk
Forget Pierre, he is nothing more than a little insurance policy. The real contest is between Mayberry and Brown. If I'm GM, Mayberry gets a full half season shot in left and Brown plays a full half season in AAA. If Mayberry plays well, he stays in left. If Brown plays well in AAA he moves up and becomes the 4th outfielder or the starting left fielder if Mayberry regresses. If they both flop, then we got problems. Dragon13
Bunt cake:Priceless. Wish he could have found a younger major leaguer. Not a good signing. This team is getting to old. When JUAN gets hurt who will replace him? tobyjoe
The truth of the matter is that the Phillies are stockpiling these kind of players and will end up keeping whoever gets hot in Spring Training. There isn't room for all of them on the 25 man roster. SteveS11
What is obvious is that the Phillies are stockpiling potential left field candidates because they don't have confidence that John Mayberry will be able to do well enough to keep an everyday starting job. Can they be blamed for that attitude? Not really. Mayberry showed a lot of promise last year, but he has to do it for a full season before they're convinced, and he has to do it against right handed pitchers as well as lefties. SteveS11
You know what makes equal sense? Trying to resurrect Honus Wagner and moving Rollins to 3B. orange rhino

I cannot disagree more with Mr Murphy. This move makes no sense because Pierre is a defensive liability in LF who cannot play more than a meaningless inning or two in CF because of a rag arm. The rest is obvious. A poor basestealer (%) with no power and an average OBP. If they cannot do better than this slop and he makes the team they will now have two extremely limited players on their bench with Thome the other. I'm guessing he doesn't make the team. JodyMac
