John Mayberry Jr. is making his second straight start batting second, and his recent play is the reason why. In 44 plate appearances this season, the right fielder is hitting .316 with a .309 on-base percentage and .553 slugging percentage.
"He’s been getting on base," manager Charlie Manuel said on Monday afternoon. "He’s been getting some hits. He stole a base last night. He’s got 6 walks. You guys talk about us not getting walks, he’s got 6 of them."
There's a chance that Mayberry's performance could give the Phillies something to think about when Delmon Young returns from the disabled list.
"When you play good, you always have a chance," Manuel said.
