Jimmy Rollins paternity leave expected to run through tomorrow

POSTED: Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 4:59 PM

The Phillies are without Jimmy Rollins tonight and Charlie Manuel expects to be without his starting short stop on Wednesday too as he spends time with his wife, Johari, and newborn daughter.

Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement allows a player to take 72 hours paternity leave for the birth of a child.

Rookie Freddy Galvis is started at shortstop last night and is in the lineup at the position against tonight.

Among the major leaguers who have missed games on the paternity list this season are Toronto reliever Sergio Santos, Astros infielder Marwin Gonzalez, Orioles infielder Robert Andino, Twins outfielder Josh Willingham, San Diego's Ernesto Frieri, and Brewers short stop Alex Gonzalez.

Congratulations. But 3 days when the team is playing at home? Just saying...

Doesn't matter. He got his new contract and he's become a below average hitter. He knows that both he and the Phils aren't going anywhere so why not take a 4 day holiday when most players only take 1-2.

This paternity leave is a new provision under the new CBA. I wonder if any player asked for 3 or 4 day leaves before. 4 days when the team is playing this bad and is at home looks a little bit too much to me, unless there were complications to the mother or child. In another job, I don't think that would happen.

OK, I'll say what we are thinking. Were there complications with the birth? Otherwise it is absurd to miss 3 home games because you are celebrating the birth of your child. Oh, but wait, he is a team leader, that is why we re-signed him.

I'd do the same. Some things are bigger than baseball. A lot of things, actually.

...men are soft these days...I was at work when my kids were born...I went to the hospital after my shift...that's the way it used to be in this once great nation...and things were better then...

Ah yes, the days are gone when Ricky Ricardo handed Fred Mertz a cigar and looked through a glass partition at his new baby, and that was the end of the man's participation in the deal. Today, husbands like that are headed for divorce court. Congrats, J-Roll

CBA gives him three days, take the three days. The birth of your first child only happens once. With this team, this won't be the last losing streak.
