The Phillies offense is doin' it and doin' it and doin' it well.I love the smell of historic parallels in the morning. . .

Last night we broached the subject of how this Phillies

team compares to the one that ran all the way to the World

Series 15 years ago. It was a very preliminary comparison

- the Phils are now on pace to finish the season with 97 wins, the same amount as that 1993 team finished with - that was little more than a shameless attempt to generate some discussion on this blog without having to pour much work into an actual intelligent entry.

But in this morning's paper, Bill Conlin actually spends some time breaking down whether or not this Phillies offense is the G.O.A.T., as L.L. Cool J would say. In particular, he measures how it stacks up against the famed 1977 team that featured Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski.

Other morning notes:

1) Ryan Howard's batting average is slowly creeping upwards, much like the mercury in the thermometer. In fact, Howard said there is some correlation between the two. He was struggling for about a week prior to yesterday's game, but went 3-for-5 and had three doubles in a game for the first time in his career.

2) J.C. Romero was held out of yesterday's game as a precautionary measure. You might remember that Romero tweaked his groin a bit in the seventh inning of Saturday night's win, prompting a visit from the training staff. He recovered, but Charlie Manuel said he wanted to stay away from Romero yesterday as a precaution. He should be able to pitch tomorrow if need be.

3) Chris Coste is 7-for-15 against the Braves this season.

4) Kerry Wood had a save last night, pushing him one ahead of Brad Lidge for the NL lead. Lidge momentarily tied him yesterday afternoon, but Wood later closed out the Cubs' 3-1 win over the Dodgers.

pretty sure it was the '77 team and not the '97 team that had the Schmidt and the bull

No way this offense tops that famed '97 Rico Brogna team.

I was at the game in Atlanta yesterday and noticed that Romero was still walking around gingerly. Sort of like the walk you make with with a groin injury..

I like the offense of the 2008 crew--even factoring in the smaller park--however, I am not sure I pick them as a whole team because od pitching--seems it was not as anxiety producing as the 2008 team--If Carlton was at his prime --and I haven't looked it up--but if it was Carlton and LC--that was good--Ruthven was good as well--not sure when he joined the team--had good relief--don't think Maalox was needed with that crew--but Black Friday was a bitter bitter pill to swallow and I think that was '77'

Our offense might be better than the 93 team, but nothing could top the mullets...

Must we in Philly always go over the deep end, do we have to jump from a nice winning streak to assuming there's a pennant and World Series and a greatest team designation immediately. Can't we enjoy what we are getting at the time and, if the best happens, we'll accept it at that point when it's been earned. Every year I watch Iowa Hawkeye and Iowa State Cyclone football fans do the same thing. The season starts with a couple of wins against mediocre college football teams and the fans on sports radio start taking National Championship and which BCS Bowl is in the future, and are completely depressed when the season winds up at .500 and they are lucky to get to a third rate bowl game. Always makes me feel like I'm back with Eagles, Flyers and Phillies fans. One day, game and step at a time please.

atp2007--I don't think folks are going overboard--the question has to do with best offensive team--and right now the 2008 team looks good--do we have the pitching to go anywhere with it--probably not --maybe NL East--

those who keep saying they dont have enough pitching... 3 shutouts this year, 5 for all of last year. they're on pace to let up 153 less runs than last year. their bullpen has the best ERA in the NL, and the closer is 2nd in saves and has 0 blown saves.

Great points mikeb. Most people have overlooked our pitching becuase of the offense, but it's entirely too soon to start drawing comparisons to any other Phils club, even last years. It's invigorating to be on a hot streak, but I just wish people would let it be just that, a streak. It's not an accomplishment (which has a finality to it), just an exciting work in progress. Enjoy the ride...

I like to look ahead to how this team can get better and what's up with the farm teams. "And don't look back-something might be gaining on you" Satchel Paige
