Ibanez sixth -- Sixth! -- in All-Star voting

POSTED: Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 5:57 PM

Raul Ibanez leads all National League outfielders in home runs (17), RBI (43), slugging (.750), runs (38) and his fourth in batting average (.345).

But in All-Star voting, the Phillies left fielder is currently sixth.

Ibanez has little more than half as many votes as Ryan Braun, who leads all NL outfielders with roughly 1.6 million votes. Among others ranked ahead of Ibanez? Brewers outfielder Mike Cameron and suspended Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez. Apparently people in Milwaukee don't have much else to do besides vote for the All-Star game, because Corey Hart is a mere 57,000 votes behind Ibanez.

Typical for a city where the sports teams hardly ever win everyone around the country/world hates them. He is one of the best players in the NL let alone the outfield thus far this season and he gets no love.

Fan voting in every sport is a joke.

Zeb nails it. Let's face it, most people aren't smart enough or knowledgeable enough to vote for the most qualified president (regardless of who it is or what their party affiliation is) let alone vote for the most qualified NL outfielder.

Why doesn't Philly.com put a link to the All Star voting site on the Sports page?

Geez, Louise, how stupid/homerish are the fans around the league? If you watch baseball AT ALL you know how great Ibanez is playing. Good thing the managers can add to the squad players they know deserve it and the idiot fans ignore.

Phillies fans rallied Whitey into the Hall of Fame. We're more than capable of getting Ibanez into the All-Star Game.

perhaps it's not fan stupidity but media coverage at that national level.

There were those (not I said the poster) that question the Phillies pricey signing of Ibanez in the offseason. He's easily suprassed 1/4 mark expectations, and for that I think the Phils owe it to Ibanez to amp up the campaign to make sure Ibanez starts the All Star Game. Turn it into AntiManny assault if necessary.

If Raul keeps his numbers up, he will be added, even if not voted in.

I am actually pretty surprised that he is that high in votes. Not because he doesn't deserve it, but because the all-star voting is usually a popularity contest.
