Howard placed on DL

POSTED: Tuesday, August 3, 2010, 5:13 PM

Ryan Howard was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a moderate left ankle sprain, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. To take his spot on the 25-man roster, the Phillies recalled outfielder John Mayberry Jr. from Triple A Lehigh Valley.

Howard, 30, was hitting .292 with 23 home runs and a NL-leading 81 RBI in 104 games. He suffered the injury while sliding back into second base on Sunday against Washington. Howard is the 15th different Phillie to land on the disabled list this season.

Mayberry, 26, was hitting .258 (99-for-383) with 12 home runs and 54 RBI in 99 games for Lehigh Valley this season.

realzeel, Charlie Gump is absolutely one of the worst tacticians out there, he absolutely under no circumstance whatsoever should win a manager of the year award. If anything, he costs this team wins on a regular basis with his decision making. I mean for Christ's sake, Lidge is still (attmepting to) close games! And you think he should win an award for this? That statement is just plain b@t $hit crazy.

More pressure on the starters. Halladay can handle it, Hamels was superb during the 55 game hitting slump. Wonder if Oswalt is thinking he's snakebit, since he also didn't get much run support in Philly west. Kendrick definitely better with a lead. Blanton:???? My cardiologist said I can only watch Lidge pitch if my wife is ready to call 911. Critical snarky comments hereby suspended until we have 6 of 8 everyday position starters back on the field. Hang tough Fightins!

Dudes, give it a rest with the "starting the clock on Riz" comments. With this payroll, the money and service clock gripe does not play too well....Rizzotti's defense is subpar. They have two defensive players who can play first in Gload and Ransom. Riz is a pure DH. Honestly, the could use another bullpen arm. I am ready to throw Vance Worley into the bullpen to evaluate how he performs.

@tobyjoe...here is the difference between the Mets and the Phils: When the Mets have this many players go on the DL they start losing and losing. They dont have the coaching staff behind them or the player personnel to really help rally them. The Phils? By all accounts, this team should probably be dead in the water, but no. Guys are picking up the slack in some major ways. Credit the coaching staff and management for putting a winner on the field the last few years. People want to play for this team and it is showing. If the Phils can pick up for Howard's absence, then this team really might be destined.

It happens, we'll see how this team can respond.

Mayberry over Tracey because he is an outfield. We are already top heavy on infielders with Gload, Dobbs, Ransom, and Valdez. Although Gload and Dobbs can play the outfield, they really are infielders.

This hurts real bad. I hope he is a fast healer. Gload is starting to hit the ball recently, so hopefully he can contribute once he starts playing regularly.

the waythe waiver wire works, its in our best interest to remain a little behind the braves, Rays, and Yankees and now that Howard id down for 15 days we'll be playing alot more 2-1 and 3-2 games as Ryan Howard heals,...there will be a lot more save situations available and we ALL do not want Lidge within sniffing distance,...it would be to our best advantage to get Trevor Hoffman here and get him here now,..Rube has to suck it up and spend just a bit more money to protect the investment that's on the field day to day,....suck it up Rube and bring Hoffman here your only excuse is the amount of money the Brewers won't eat cause he's available

ahh REDDGIE, this is why i get crazy reading some of these posts and i'm sorry but i have to respond to yours, the phillies have lost more man games to injury than any team in baseball and they are still in the hunt and probably will make the playoffs, this is a credit to A the talent that wade, gillick and amaro have put toether including the drafting and scouting thru the minors, and B the manager who absolutley without question will be manager of the year if this team makes the postseason, and as for lidge what do you think manuel is supposed to do with with him REDDG,,,,,he makes 12 million dollars this season, they cannot just sit him in the bullpen or send him down, do you think any other team will trade for that salary with the way he is pitching. the manager has no choice but to massage him, coddle him and try to get whatever is left out of him. so please think before you type.

Bobby Cox: Hope you're enjoying your pursuit of a NL East title in your final season managing the Braves. Want some advice? You've had Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polonco, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz on the DL at various times this season. Unless you have a voodoo doll in your back pocket with a Jayson Werth jersey, I figure the Phils will have a complete starting lineup when the Phils begin to play the final six games of their season series against your team. You should really take this opportunity to curb stomp Philly now becuase against a healthy lineup with Halladay-Oswalt-Hamels, your team won't have a CHANCE IN HELL of holding the Phils off. So good luck taking care of business because come Sept 14, the Phils will be waiting. And say HI too Billy Redneck for me!
